About

Shen Yun Performing Arts is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together over a hundred of the world's foremost classically trained Chinese dancers, choreographers, musicians, and vocalists. It also boasts the world's only full orchestra that embraces both Western and Chinese instruments as its permanent members.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is distinguished by its conscious effort to remain independent of China's communist regime, which has abused and impoverished the arts for decades. It is proud to thus include members who practice Falun Gong. The company aspires to create original performances that not only entertain, but also more deeply educate, enrich, and inspire. The company's rich repertory is drawn from the pages of history, universal themes, and the world around us. All choreography and music performed are original.

We thoroughly enjoyed the performances of Shen Yun. The dancing was graceful as well as skillful. The stories behind the dances were interesting.

  • Nice But Too Long

by MB on 5/1/24New Jersey Performing Arts Center - NewarkRating: 3 out of 5

I appreciate the talent of the dancers, but after a while, there was a sameness to the presentation. While l did follow the stories, the dances were very similar. I did like the special effects, with the performers jumping down near the screen, then appearing to fly through the air. I would recommend sitting in the Orchestra seats in order to get the full effect of the presentation. I sat near the front of the second tier, so l was looking down on the stage, which wasn't very appealing. The performance was a little too long for my taste and the temperature in the Center was too hot and uncomfortable.

  • Confusing Elegance

by Agnostic Evolutionist on 5/1/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

My family and I were excited to experience some Chinese culture and we bought our tickets as soon as the show was announced. Little did we know that we'd spent hundreds of dollars to watch several rearrangements of the same dance, interspersed with religious and political commentary. By the end, we weren't sure if we were being shown cultural dance or indoctrination. Thankfully my family identified what was happening quite quickly so we changed our perspective to looking for the humor, thusly 3 stars. I imagine most do not share our darker sense of humor though and it explains why we saw families leaving when the routine included organ harvesting. The music was amazing and the dancers were skilled, but the undertones of recruitment were strong and if you can handle that, it may be worth it. Just sharpen your Google skills before you finalize your purchase.

  • SHEIN Yun

by Che on 5/1/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Ushers were great! Seats were great! Entry personnel could have been a little nicer. Cross guards nice. Show was alright vocal soloist were way too loud. Good story line and depicted well by the performers. Some of the screen video was out of date to me but it was cool to see the performers emerge from the screen. MC’s were pleasant. Orchestra was wonderful!!! I don’t think I would go back to see another but that’s just me. Once I see something I rarely go to see it again.

by Bill on 5/1/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Totally amazing music and dancing. Good Buddhist literature, too. Will definitely return next time they come to Knoxville.

  • Mostly Good

by Shell on 5/1/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

The show itself is phenomenal! I only disliked the modern sequences as I prefer the traditional Chinese arts. The religious aspect felt preachy and brainwashy. The seats in the balcony are super tight, definitely wouldn't recommend if you have longer legs. Other than that, my overall experience was good.

  • The performance was extraordinary!

by Darlene on 5/1/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Uplifting, beautiful, inspiring. Just a few words to describe the performance. The colors, special effects, and superb dancing are just a few reasons that we will be attending the performance next year.

  • Beautiful production

by Lalo on 5/1/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Choreography, timing, execution all just beautiful. It also tells a beautiful story. I left feeling good as well as entertained. Highly recommend.

  • A better way to tell a story

by Fantastic on 4/30/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This was well worth 4 hour drive to see this show. My son and I had a most wonderful time at the show. This was just a great way to tell a story, through dance. Like hula, stories were told using dance and it was so well done. I would recommend this show to anybody

  • Not Good

by Disappointed on 4/30/24New Jersey Performing Arts Center - NewarkRating: 1 out of 5

It gets a 1 star because I give credit to the performers who I am sure worked hard. That said, the story line was very strange, almost cultish. When we arrived. there was a person who represented the show and just watched every move you made. I received a text from work (phone was silent) and I read it ensuring to keep it low so the light didn’t bother anyone next to me. Out of nowhere this representative who was watching everything approached me and demanded to not only see my phone, but all my pictures (I guess to make sure I wasn’t taking any which I assure you I wasn’t). I had a few choice words for her and of course refused. I got so disgusted, I left. The whole atmosphere felt like I was truly in a communist country with my every move being monitored. The tickets were way overpriced and no way was the show worth the money. Never again-

  • Fantabulous!

by Chantou! Best ever! My daughter and I enjoy the show tremendously. on 4/30/24New Jersey Performing Arts Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

The show went beyond my expectations. The moves were done with agility and perfection. The dances were choreographed with such creativity and perfection. The music was so entertaining. Let us not talk about the designs on stage and the colors. It was breathtaking watching the show.

  • Great Performance If You Can Ignore the Propaganda

by TallGirl on 4/30/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

The dance and choreography were phenomenal with an amazing use of technology on the screen. Most of the scenes I found enjoyable except for 2 of them and that is when things were said that made us uncomfortable. While not an Atheist, two songs talked about the evils of atheism and evolution, and I was not prepared for that. Everyone should be allowed to have their own beliefs, calling Atheist and those that believe in evolution as sources of evil I do have a problem with. When we purchased these tickets, we had seen Shen Yun advertised and my partner loves Asian culture and is a Buddhist. While disturbed about those 2 acts we did enjoy the show, but after some research into the origins of Shen Yun and (Falun) Dafa if went downhill from there. Dafa is new and not old but is based on multiple ancient Chinese beliefs. My partner felt it betrayed her Buddhist beliefs. I highly suggest doing some research into Dafa if you want to contribute to it or not since performances do fund the non-profit and their NY compound that sponsors the company. Just note that the Wiki page for Dafa is heavily edited by the founder so look at multple sources.

  • Terrible audience

by Karyn on 4/30/24New Jersey Performing Arts Center - NewarkRating: 3 out of 5

Hundreds of patrons were allowed in very late, causing constant disruption to seeing the show. Latecomers did not put their phones away, causing glaring distractions. The costumes, dance and scenery were lovely, but the message that atheism an evolution are the work of satan, were clearly a fundamentalist Christian message, not authentic to ancient China.

  • Unhappy

by Javi on 4/29/24New Jersey Performing Arts Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great. The downfall was the double seating. It pretty embarrassing to have wait in the hallway while the show was going on and they had to figure out why someone else were in my seats. Then I was I sat a couple of rows back until intermission. Very disappointing. Will I come back? Most likely not!
