About

Shen Yun Performing Arts is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together over a hundred of the world's foremost classically trained Chinese dancers, choreographers, musicians, and vocalists. It also boasts the world's only full orchestra that embraces both Western and Chinese instruments as its permanent members.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is distinguished by its conscious effort to remain independent of China's communist regime, which has abused and impoverished the arts for decades. It is proud to thus include members who practice Falun Gong. The company aspires to create original performances that not only entertain, but also more deeply educate, enrich, and inspire. The company's rich repertory is drawn from the pages of history, universal themes, and the world around us. All choreography and music performed are original.

    Repetitious

by GG on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

The colorful costumes were beautiful, the performers graceful, and the backdrop screen was very clever. However, the dancing was repetitive after the first few. Would not go again.

Incredible dancers, beautiful backdrops, colorful costumes

by Serenity on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

One cannot deny the talent of the dancer, who seemed to float through the air. The "interactive"backdrops reminded me of a country filled with beautiful mountains, lakes, and architecture. The costumes were colorful, and enhanced the grace and beauty of the female dancers. Overall, I preferred watching the lovely ladies, with their various "group"formations. Some of the story-telling performances reminded me of the old "keystone cops"shows, and the music during that period was too repetitive.

    Spectacular - Beautiful - Engaging

by WIMNDEEC on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

The show (and venue) were outstanding. I had interest in the past but decided not to attend due to the high prices. But when I saw Shen Yun was in town again, I looked into tickets and found they were reasonable. I am SO glad I did. What an amazingly beautiful show. I loved the many and varied stories told in music, dance, with added interactive projections that help to convey so much more detail in each story. The programs include a synopsis of each story and I am so grateful for that. As I read through it the days after the show, it helped me recall each vignette with great detail. The show was so much more than I imagined. The live orchestra with western and Chinese instruments combining to make the sounds unique and ethereal; the pure athleticism and refinement of the dance, the vibrant and historically accurate costumes (if the program is to be believed, and I have no reason not to believe it). I learned the show is created anew each year, including stories, dance, music, costumes, etc. It is more impressive when you consider the amount of work and dedication that consistently goes into each year's production. I also learned the show is created in the United States and includes stories of China's past prior to the communist revolution. This means the creators enjoy freedom of expression. I don't have to weigh my conscience over the risk of supporting an oppressive regime and the potential oppression of artists with my ticket purchase. In every way, the show was a beautiful and soul-enhancing experience. I would love to return to see Shen Yun in future years and I highly recommend the experience.

More of an interpretive dance some what disappointed

by Alta35 on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

My anticipation for Shen Yun was fueled by glowing reviews, despite the somewhat steep ticket prices. I anticipated an immersive blend of visual spectacle and auditory delights. However, my experience fell short of expectations. Instead of being swept away by a grand production, it felt more akin to a high school theater performance, complete with narration and interpretive dance. Adding to the disappointment was the lack of consideration from fellow attendees. Loud chomping and bag rustling from those indulging in snacks detracted from the performance. The venue should have either prohibited noisy snacks or provided designated eating areas away from the performance spaces. Furthermore, I had hoped for a live showcase of talents such as drum performances and original symphonies, rather than relying heavily on video presentations. While the performance was decent, it failed to justify the hefty price tag.

    Underwhelmed

by Greta on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

The dancing - when they danced - was incredible. Well trained, fit, disciplined dancers. I didn't like that the show was a series of vignettes, out of chronological order. For the price of the tickets, I expected more. I've been to several shows so far this year; my favorite, for value, entertainment and comfort, was Cirque de Soleil.

    Beautiful Dance & Costumes

by Aimwah on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

My 14 year old and I went to this over the weekend, and OH MY GOSH, the dance, acrobatics, costumes were AMAZING. These dancers are so talented. That said, there were also several scenes where I was just wondering “what?” For example, this amazing singer came on stage for a solo performance, and the lyrics were translated and written on a screen. The lyrics included things like “atheism and evolution are deadly ideas,” and “modern trends destroy what makes us human.” We were very confused. While we really loved & appreciated the dance & costumes, we decided that we would probably not ever need to go again.

A Beautiful Blend of East & West

    by Matty'O on 5/6/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

This was the third time I've gone to see Shen Yun, and once more they did not disappoint. The adaptions of classical Chinese story telling mixed with largely Western musical accompaniment brings the past to present in wonderous Ways. And the way they don't shy away from their stance against the vile evils of the athiest communist CCP is nothing shy of commendable and applaudable. Have no doubt, Shen Yun is worth of seeing year after year, and is well worth your time and the cost of admission!

    Must See

by Shepard on 5/6/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

Shen Yun was one of the best performances we have ever had the pleasure of watching. The artists are absolutely amazing, from the dancers to the orchestra, everyone was mind-blowing. Do not miss the opportunity to see Shen Yun. If you're asking yourself, "Is it worth it?"Let me tell you, without a doubt, it is the best money you'll ever spend. We had the pleasure of being in seats I-13, I-14, front row, center stage. We had the best seats in the house. I don't know how we got so lucky, but for the $400 we spent on this performance, it was worth every penny. It was a night we'll never forget. We hope you read this review, and book your tickets for next year's show. We hope to see you there!

Great performance that was interactive, entertaining and educational. The screen technology used pulled the audience to another dimension in the blink of an eye - awesome! The dancers seem to ‘spring’ through the air at amazing speed/ height so skillfull and precise. You gotta see it for yourself.

    Exceptional display of beauty

by Missy on 5/6/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Very well done. So beautiful to watch. Only part I didn't care for was the Male singers as it was in Chinese so English speakers didn't know what was being sung.
