About

SHEILA E. IN CONCERT:

Legendary singer, percussionist, and Prince protÊgÊ Sheila E. continues to bring the funk nearly three decades after her debut. In 2013 she released Sheila E ICON, her first album of new material since 2001's Heaven, proving she remains firmly in the groove with rhythmically stunning tracks like "Girl Like Me" and  "The Leader of the Band", which was co-written by the Purple One himself. A seasoned performer who's as comfortable soloing on the guitar as she is on the drums, Sheila E. never fails to dazzle on her hit-filled tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

California-born Sheila E., a.k.a. Sheila Escovedo, comes from a long line of accomplished musicians that includes her percussionist father and punk rocker uncle. She made her recording debut as a drummer on Alphonso Johnson's 1976 track "Yesterday's Dreamin'", and by her early twenties had played with legends like Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross. In 1978 she met Prince, launching a career-defining collaboration that led to her breakout success as a solo artist in the mid-'80s with Prince-penned hits like "The Glamorous Life", "The Belle of St. Mark", and "A Love Bizarre". With the release of her seventh album Sheila E ICON in 2013, Sheila E. displayed the same rhythmic mastery and stunning vocals that made her a star, building anticipation among ticket buyers for her next unforgettable show.

    Awesome Show!

by Lady J. on 10/8/19Howard Theatre - Washington

I was a "first-timer" seeing the incredible Sheila E. and what an experience, truly an outstanding performance! I'm a drummer too, so I was impressed with her skills! Sheila E. is a Hall of Fame Drummer! She put on a clinic! She's still got mad chops! Seriously! The whole band was tight! Her god son plays guitar and he rocked, excellent all-around good player. Even the sax player showed his mad skills! Everybody in the band brought their "A-Game". All her musicians are top-notch, and highly skilled. They appeared to be having a ball! The show was non-stop entertainment from beginning to end! She played some old favorites as well as new material. It was also my first time seeing a show at the Howard. The venue is a perfect spot for a date night. I was solo but the crowd was so much fun, I met new people and we danced the night away! Outstanding evening! One for the record books! Very Very good show!

My husband and I really enjoyed the music and the band. I was grateful that it was just her (no opener). The timing was perfect and Sheila E is a wonderful artist.

Superb drumming - too much religion

by James on 10/8/19Howard Theatre - Washington

Sheila E is a wonderful and gifted drummer. I could have listened to her on the drum set all night - however she only used the drum set for one song. The rest of the time she used a standing snare drum. The rest of the act ...supported by several relatives of her's is good. There was a significant amount of religion which offended me. I can go to church if I want but come on not on my Saturday night. Overall the show was good - if Sheila E played drums all night...they would sell out.

    Seila E Brought IT!!!

by TJ on 10/8/19Howard Theatre - Washington

This was my first time seeing her live in concert and while this may not be her heyday; she did not disappoint! Her whole crew was awesome! My only reason for not giving the whole experience 5 star rating was due to the venue. I don't know who the Howard Theater has providing food service now, but it is horrible and no longer representative of African-American cuisine or soul food. What's worse is everything served came out COLD! Not warm...COLD! How is the cheese on a flatbread pizza not even melted?

    More Hits, Less Cover Songs

by Mister HB on 10/8/19Howard Theatre - Washington

Being a longtime Prince & Sheila E fan, I was disappointed that the only hits played were Erotic City, Love Bizarre, Koo & the Glamorous Life, finale which was excellent. But no HollyRock, Sister Fate, Belle of St Mark, Romance 1600, Noon Rendezvous, Hold Me, et al. Sheila did a couple new songs and opened up with about 40 minutes of cover songs. And also tried to insert a political vibe since this was a DC show. I would have preferred the George Duke songs, Reach for It or Dukes Stick instead all the James Brown & PFunk covers, the show started of like a cruise 🚢 cover band. The band was tight musically but fans want to hear your music. A lot of people in the audience were first timers and core fans would have preferred her hits. America by Prince was a plus. Can’t say it was the musical experience I was hoping for 😐

Amazing concert. One of the best I’ve attended.

    by M. on 10/8/19Howard Theatre - Washington

Only improvement I would suggest is that if people purchase the Gold Circle, they should have the option of the front row or balcony.

    Sit down?

by Nakia on 10/7/19Sony Hall - New York

This event should not have been a sit down event. There was no space to dance or even scratch my nose. Very tight.

    Shelia E

by H on 10/7/19The Meadows Casino - Washington

She played for an hour and a half solid and rocked the whole time. She interacted with the crowd by having 10 people come up on stage and dance to her song and also came into the crowd and sang a song while playing a guitar. Overall for being 62 yrs old she looked great and played like she was 26! My wife and i had a great time!
