About

Shawn Colvin in Concert

Born in Vermilion, South Dakota and raised in part in Illinois and Ontario, Shawn Colvin was already a well-traveled and seasoned performer by the time she won her first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut album, Steady On in 1989. She has been a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since, releasing eleven superlative albums and establishing herself as one of America’s greatest live performers. She triumphed at the 1998 GRAMMY Awards, winning both Record and Song of the Year for “Sunny Came Home.” Her inspiring and candid memoir, Diamond In The Rough, which chronicles her struggles with depression and eating disorders, was published to strong reviews in 2012. With the wit, lyricism, and empathy that have characterized Shawn’s performances and inspired audiences worldwide, Diamond in the Rough looks back over a rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor.

Shawn’s most recent solo endeavor, Uncovered (Fantasy Records, 2015), is the long-awaited follow up to fan-favorite Cover Girl. Uncovered's twelve tunes include masterful interpretations of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash to name a few, but in their selection and delivery, they are pure Shawn Colvin.

In June 2016, Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle united to release, Colvin & Earle, their acclaimed self-titled duo album (Fantasy Records). Produced by Buddy Miller (Patty Griffin, Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams) the album features guitarist Richard Bennett (Neil Diamond, Mark Knopfler), drummer Fred Eltringham (Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves), and bassist Chris Wood (of Medeski Martin & Wood). Fueled by their longtime friendship, Colvin & Earle beautifully captures the pair’s extraordinary chemistry and is a true standout in careers already filled with pinnacles and masterpieces. The album received high praise from critics – NPR asserted that the duo “Elevated their collaboration to the level of top-flight album-making, bringing seemingly opposing impulses to the process.”

Shawn’s longtime career achievements were recognized when she was recently bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at this year’s Americana Honors & Awards Show, held at Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium on September 21st, 2016. Presenting Colvin with this prestigious award was Bonnie Raitt. Of Shawn, Raitt said “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard— and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake”

    A Wonderful Evening

by Buddy’s Mom on 12/9/21The Magnolia - El Cajon

First time at the Magnolia theatre in El Cajon. Really nice intimate venue. Only issue is the seats are really narrow and there is ZERO room between and the person next to you. The concert was great. The combination of all three voices was fabulous. Sara Watkins violin playing is amazing as well as her voice.

    NOT MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER!

by JANI K on 12/9/21The Magnolia - El Cajon

I bought tickets for Mary Chapin Carpenter. That is who I wanted to see. I did not go to the concert because the artist I wanted to see wasn't there. I would have preferred a cancellation and reschedule instead of a substitution. Can you really substitute someone for Mary. I don't think so. Bummer all around.

A good evening of great music.

    by K. W. on 12/9/21The Magnolia - El Cajon

Each of these artists is great on their own, and as a trio, they were excellent! We loved the way they meshed and melded their talent and music. Unhappy that Mary Chapin Carpenter pulled out (so unprofessional!), but were so pleased with these three, we didn’t miss her. The sound was great at the Magnolia, and there’s not a bad seat in the place, as far as a good view of the stage. There’s also lots of free parking. So glad to see this venue up and running again. It’s such an awesome (kind of intimate) place to see something; we’ll be returning for other events.

    Amazing!!

by nanjo on 12/9/21The Magnolia - El Cajon

Great venue and great concert!! I was disappointed when I found out Mary Chapin-Carpenter was being replaced by Sara Watkins but not after I saw the 3 of them together! Loved that Shawn, Mark and Sara all played together- they engaged the crowd and sounded fantastic together! Had never been to the Magnolia before and thought it was a great venue!

    Fantastic!

by Shannon on 11/8/21Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

I picked this concert partly because it was on a Friday night. I also really like Marc Cohen. All 3 of them were just wonderful & we were surprised to learn that this was only their 2nd show together. And of course Hoyt Sherman is one of the best venues around!

    Concert was good. Drinks overpriced.

by Jasman on 11/8/21Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

I wish the artist had my waited to like the last minute to insist that masks be worn. Not Hoyt Sherman’s fault.

    What a Trio

by Tom on 11/7/21State Theatre - Minneapolis

All of these individuals are fantastic on there own, but to be able to see all 3 live in a great theater was over the top. The guitar playing and voice of Sarah was magical.

    A disappointment

    by S. C. on 11/7/21State Theatre - Minneapolis

It was one of the worst concerts I’ve ever been to. It seemed totally unrehearsed and unprofessional. At one point Shawn C tried to harmonize with Sarah and it was an utter disaster. Honestly, I think that both Shawn C’s and Marc C’s voices are past their peak. And Shawn seemed mostly uninterested in the whole deal. Sarah J was the saving grace of the night but she barely had any voice due to a cold, and I really felt for her, but it was painful to hear her strain her voice. Really disappointing and frankly a waste of money.

    Too Much Tuning!

    by b. a. on 4/16/19American Theatre - Hampton

I LOVED Shawn Colvin's music, thought she was in great voice, and enjoyed the show, but it was very frustrating that she had to tune her guitar in between EVERY song. It was VERY annoying and interrupted the flow of of the show. She mentioned not using a tuner because it interfered with her relationship with the audience; but I felt there was a far greater disruption to our relationship when she was so focused on the tuning. Too much. SOOOOOO happy to see Hornsby pop on stage during the show! He should have come back to play the piano on a song or two before the end of the show!

    Always Amazing

by HG on 4/16/19American Theatre - Hampton

It’s always a great time when you get to see Shawn Colvin. Local Virginian, Bruce Hornsby, joined her on stage and sealed the deal on an awesome night.

thought acoustics weren't great, too much tuning of guitar, not much energy in performance.

    Always Perfection~

by Kim Black on 4/1/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Shawn Colvin never disappoints. I know this because I have seen her numerous times. I ws particularly grateful to hear her sing, "Shotgun Down the Avalanche," "Facts About Jimmy," and "Polaroids!" She always tells stories of her eperiences and the musicians she's performed with. Each time, I learn something new about her, and each time she is ever the artist and entertainer. I can't wait until next time!

Fun night - could have played longer

by M. M. on 4/1/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Love her music and her story telling. She sounded great and her guitar was tuned perfectly for every song. Wish she would have played a little longer.
