About

Shawn Colvin in Concert

Born in Vermilion, South Dakota and raised in part in Illinois and Ontario, Shawn Colvin was already a well-traveled and seasoned performer by the time she won her first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut album, Steady On in 1989. She has been a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since, releasing eleven superlative albums and establishing herself as one of America’s greatest live performers. She triumphed at the 1998 GRAMMY Awards, winning both Record and Song of the Year for “Sunny Came Home.” Her inspiring and candid memoir, Diamond In The Rough, which chronicles her struggles with depression and eating disorders, was published to strong reviews in 2012. With the wit, lyricism, and empathy that have characterized Shawn’s performances and inspired audiences worldwide, Diamond in the Rough looks back over a rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor.

Shawn’s most recent solo endeavor, Uncovered (Fantasy Records, 2015), is the long-awaited follow up to fan-favorite Cover Girl. Uncovered's twelve tunes include masterful interpretations of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash to name a few, but in their selection and delivery, they are pure Shawn Colvin.

In June 2016, Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle united to release, Colvin & Earle, their acclaimed self-titled duo album (Fantasy Records). Produced by Buddy Miller (Patty Griffin, Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams) the album features guitarist Richard Bennett (Neil Diamond, Mark Knopfler), drummer Fred Eltringham (Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves), and bassist Chris Wood (of Medeski Martin & Wood). Fueled by their longtime friendship, Colvin & Earle beautifully captures the pair’s extraordinary chemistry and is a true standout in careers already filled with pinnacles and masterpieces. The album received high praise from critics – NPR asserted that the duo “Elevated their collaboration to the level of top-flight album-making, bringing seemingly opposing impulses to the process.”

Shawn’s longtime career achievements were recognized when she was recently bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at this year’s Americana Honors & Awards Show, held at Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium on September 21st, 2016. Presenting Colvin with this prestigious award was Bonnie Raitt. Of Shawn, Raitt said “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard— and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake”

    A bit underwhelming

    by kate48 on 2/22/23Warner Theatre - Washington

SO excited t o see Shawn Colvin. Loved her fun and soulful music for years. We did not get to hear many of her wonderful songs. She seemed to lack the the spunk and wit of the past. Marc Cohen seemed sad and uncomfortable. Sarah was very good...beautiful voice and seemed to be enjoying herself. I guess, one out of three isn't bad!! It made me a not sad to see such amazing talents seem tired and sad.

    Shawn Colvin's enduring talent

by Mooringsman on 2/22/23Warner Theatre - Washington

I came to this concert to see Sarah Jarosz for the first time. I left the concert reminding myself of all the reasons I was blown away by Shawn Colvin the first time I heard & saw her, and was impressed that she has all the guitar chops and vocal range still. She is an enduring performer of rare talent, and it was great to see her showcased with the other two stellar musicians. Also -- she has a wicked sense of humor that lightened the mood of the incredibly polished performance of all three. I am a newly confirmed lifelong fan. Lastly -- what a treat to witness the genuine affection for the recently departed "Cros", and the shoutout to Jon Leventhal too, who was such an influence on Shawn's sound. I can't get their anthem "That Don't Worry Me at All" out of my head: that was the highpoint of the concert.

    Really enjoyed the concert.

by Jozarray on 2/22/23Warner Theatre - Washington

All three performers were great, and had great stage presence. They had wonderful rapport among themselves and with the audience. They sprinkled in excellent stories from their lives as musicians and their close friendships with David Crosby, who was recently deceased. Especially loved Sarah Jarosz. She was a very good and important addition to their tour.

Great show, horrible ticket purchase experience

by TMP on 2/22/23Warner Theatre - Washington

The performances themselves were fantastic! We really went for Marc Cohen who we have seen live before and love. But Shawn Colvin and Sarah Jarosz were great too, indeed Sarah turned out to be the star of the show! What talent! What a voice!

    Great concert

by Sand on 2/13/23Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Great venue. Great acoustics and loved the format of three songwriters helping each other sign each others songs. Shaun's style is very fun and her guitar playing is really impressive.

    Great night of music

by Big fan on 1/29/23Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

A really great night of music. I thought they would all play individually, but to my surprise it was the three of them together on stage. It worked really well as they backed each other on their own music. Beautiful venue inside and out. Acoustics were very good and I just loved them all!

    MC

by PK on 1/29/23Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

We loved that all three performed together. Sarah was a delightful surprise. Loved seeing Marc for the 4th time and Shawn for the first. Only drawback was Shawn constantly retuning her guitar.

    Good experience.

by OldTiredRN on 1/28/23Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Love Shawn Colvin, play all her albums often. Hearing Sarah Jarosz was a treat, we play her albums often also, and have been waiting for an opportunity to see and hear her. The ticket prices were very reasonable. Would see both of them again! The venue was nice, had not been there before. The online ticketing and entry was easy, hassle free. It was a nice evening.

    Great Trio Great Venue

by i. m. on 1/28/23Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Magical night. Hospitable staff and the tribute they gave Crosby was touching. Sara's voice is angelic and their harmony and humor together made for a very successful intimate musical evening! Masterful musicians! Bravo!

    Amazing

by Sarita on 5/10/22The Cabot - Beverly

Voice, guitar, songwriting, stories, Shawn Colvin is an amazing performer and human being!! We bought the tickets two years earlier, just before COVID, so the postponed show was a surprise and turned out to be a surprise gift for our spirits -- energizing, impressive, moving, brilliant -- just fantastic.

Shawn still has it, Cabot - eh

by Tall guy on 5/10/22The Cabot - Beverly

She played great. Balcony seats are not made for 6' tall people. No leg room. Had to sit sideways. Definitely took away from the show.

    Great show

by Wayne on 5/4/22Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - Bethel

The last time I saw her was 30 years ago when she toured in support of her first album “Steady On”. Since this (delayed) tour was to mark the 30th anniversary of its release, it was great to hear her play the album in its entirety, as well as some other tunes. I’ve always admired her guitar playing and she did not disappoint. Thank you Shawn for a wonderful evening.

    Great music and singer

by Madell on 2/8/22Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Theatre was very hot which seemed to disrupt the singer and caused her to suspend the show for a few minutes because she had a tickle in her throat. Perhaps cool the place down somewhat. Otherwise, enjoyable experience.

    The Worst

by Gdub on 2/8/22Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I have followed Shawn for 30 years, this concert was my third. The show was so poor that I wish I could be refunded. She could not sing, she left early, had to stop the show. Not worth the money. Will never see her again!!

    Very Disappointed

by Jerry on 2/8/22Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

When we discovered that there were absolutely no covid safety requirements for the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall for this performance we simply did not go. We stayed home and listened to Shawn Colvin's recordings.

    A wonderful blend

    by G. K. on 12/10/21The Magnolia - El Cajon

I wasn't quite sure what to expect as the show approached and last minute changes to the lineup occurred. What I experienced was a really wonderful musical experience as these three talented artists displayed a wonderful comaraderie onstage while providing a wonderful evening of vocal harmonies and instrumental prowess. Our local Sara Watkins did a fine job filling the groove as the show approached. Her violin and vocal splendor was well received by Shawn Colvin and Marc Cohn who also displayed a variety of well received songs and stories. There was an obvious appreciation shared between the artists and the very appreciative crowd that came to enjoy the evening.
