About

Shawn Colvin in Concert

Born in Vermilion, South Dakota and raised in part in Illinois and Ontario, Shawn Colvin was already a well-traveled and seasoned performer by the time she won her first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut album, Steady On in 1989. She has been a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since, releasing eleven superlative albums and establishing herself as one of America’s greatest live performers. She triumphed at the 1998 GRAMMY Awards, winning both Record and Song of the Year for “Sunny Came Home.” Her inspiring and candid memoir, Diamond In The Rough, which chronicles her struggles with depression and eating disorders, was published to strong reviews in 2012. With the wit, lyricism, and empathy that have characterized Shawn’s performances and inspired audiences worldwide, Diamond in the Rough looks back over a rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor.

Shawn’s most recent solo endeavor, Uncovered (Fantasy Records, 2015), is the long-awaited follow up to fan-favorite Cover Girl. Uncovered's twelve tunes include masterful interpretations of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash to name a few, but in their selection and delivery, they are pure Shawn Colvin.

In June 2016, Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle united to release, Colvin & Earle, their acclaimed self-titled duo album (Fantasy Records). Produced by Buddy Miller (Patty Griffin, Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams) the album features guitarist Richard Bennett (Neil Diamond, Mark Knopfler), drummer Fred Eltringham (Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves), and bassist Chris Wood (of Medeski Martin & Wood). Fueled by their longtime friendship, Colvin & Earle beautifully captures the pair’s extraordinary chemistry and is a true standout in careers already filled with pinnacles and masterpieces. The album received high praise from critics – NPR asserted that the duo “Elevated their collaboration to the level of top-flight album-making, bringing seemingly opposing impulses to the process.”

Shawn’s longtime career achievements were recognized when she was recently bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at this year’s Americana Honors & Awards Show, held at Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium on September 21st, 2016. Presenting Colvin with this prestigious award was Bonnie Raitt. Of Shawn, Raitt said “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard— and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake”

    Always Perfection~

by Kim Black on 4/1/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Shawn Colvin never disappoints. I know this because I have seen her numerous times. I ws particularly grateful to hear her sing, "Shotgun Down the Avalanche," "Facts About Jimmy," and "Polaroids!" She always tells stories of her eperiences and the musicians she's performed with. Each time, I learn something new about her, and each time she is ever the artist and entertainer. I can't wait until next time!

Love her music and her story telling. She sounded great and her guitar was tuned perfectly for every song. Wish she would have played a little longer.

A fantastic show in a great venue. Shawn Colvin was so good. She played great songs, new and old, and told a few stories. So relaxed on stage. A very intimate show. Larry and Theresa were amazing! Can't believe I've not heard them before. Enjoyed the entire experience so much!

A Great Show With a Few Surprises!

by GoValGal on 11/17/17Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

First off, I just love Fletcher Theatre because it is much smaller and more intimate than the other larger venues and there really isn't a bad seat. However, a Monday night concert can be iffy since it's not a popular date night and for that reason, it can be common to see empty seats. Couple this with a starting time of 8pm and I admit it surprised me that there was an opening act. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams (also a part of Shawn's band for this tour) came out to warm up the crowd and it turns out they are both very accomplished artists in their own right and gave us a very quality opening show! After the break, Shawn came out and this crowd was definitely ready. The "A Few Small Repairs" album is still my favorite and I was beyond excited to hear all of the songs live. And Shawn didn't disappoint! However, she is who she is. She is not the warmest artist, so don't expect her to interact much with the audience. But she did try to share some details about how each song came to be and even tossed out a comment and a chuckle from time to time. Her band members were introduced along with a little background on each they were a very talented and interesting ensemble. There was an obligatory bow after the last song of the album, but we knew they would be coming back out to play at least a few songs from the other albums and they did! It was about 11pm when the show ended, so it was a full evening of entertainment and well worth the ticket price! I love Shawn Colvin!

    Concert was great

by slmingol on 11/16/17Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Concert was great, would highly recommend it to anyone that's a Shawn Colvin fan. The opening act was great as well (Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams). They also played with Shawn and the rest of her band after. They were both pleasant surprises. My wife and I both went, we sensed some frustration from Shawn when she first started with "Sonny Came Home". This concert was the type where they play through an entire album to honor its 20th anniversary. She joked after that song that for those that came to hear that song they could leave now, but she hoped they'd stay for the rest of the show. It was obviously a joke, but it seemed like something that you'd say when you've probably played all your hits 100's of times. Probably gets tiresome for them, but she quickly seemed to get past it and the mood lightened up after that, so no harm no foul. **NOTE:** to artists - so many of you are supremely talented, if you want to play cover songs for some other band all night, we'd be completely fine with it, and mix in some of your own, do whatever you want, we're there to see you perform, you don't have to play your most popular songs. Just jam, anyone that's stuck with an artist for 20 years clearly likes/loves the artist and just wants to see them perform ANYTHING and have a great time just enjoying music. Shawn Colvin-

by elleBruce on 11/3/17Birchmere - Alexandria

What an excellent show, Shawn Colvin's voice is beautiful, her presence/personality and artistry came shining through on every song..we sang every note with her and wanted the show to last as long as possible, she delivered it all. The Birchmere is an intimate and good place to hear a legend like Colvin. Her Band was great..special guests, Campbell and Williams brought the house down a few times with some cool originals and great story telling, nice surprise, can't wait for the next concert!!

    A wonderful evening

by MikeandDonna on 11/2/17Birchmere - Alexandria

Third time seeing Shawn Colvin, and best time yet. Backed by a great band seems to have made her step up her game, and it really worked. Full album played from start to finish was spot on. And a few other gems on the side. This wasn’t just a gig...it was an experience.

A Few Small Repairs Needs None

by TomKAlexandriVA on 11/2/17Birchmere - Alexandria

20 years later and this album seems more timely than ever. Have seen Shawn Colvin a number of times before, but never with a band. A special treat with Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams--great opening act and then performed beautifully with Shawn Colvin. And no better venue than the Birchmere--50 years of history, not a bad seat in the house, the chance to relax and enjoy a beer with dinner, and super warm people who really know music. Almost went back for a second night (except it was Halloween and couldn't miss the kids in our neighborhood). See this show.

Spent night in ER instead of concert

by Petruska on 10/10/17Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

I gave her 5 stars, not because I was there, but because I know she was wonderful. Sadly my husband ended up in the ER on concert night. I hope to catch some of it on utube so I can at least enjoy her remarkable talent. Luckily I did take out insurance, but my gawd what hoops I have to jump through Allianz to get the $136 back. If we had children, I'm sure they would have wanted me to put them up as collateral. I hope she comes back into the Bay Area soon so we really can see and enjoy her talent in person.

Shawn Colvin A Few Small Repairs 20th Anniversary

by SFconcertgirl on 10/10/17Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Shawn and her band were excellent. They played the album according to the original song list and each song sounded as fresh as the first time I listened to the album 20 years ago. She finished the set with some of her best work including a cover by the Beatles', "I'll Be Back". Don't miss this show! We were lucky to be a part of the meet and greet where Shawn did a acoustic cover of Tom Petty's "Wildflowesr" and then answered a few of our questions. She was engaging and funny and very sweet.

I have been to 5 of her concerts over the years and this one was disappointing. She spent a lot of time on stage tuning her guitar and talking. She has a lovely voice.
