Seton Hall Pirates Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team was in 1903, although with no coach and no arena, the team didn't play again for another five years. The "Pirate" became the team mascot in 1931, and in 1936, intrepid professional basketball player John "Honey" Russell took the head coach post and held it for two terms, totaling 18 years. Russell created a winning team that convinced Seton Hall to build its first sports arena, Walsh Gymnasium, which still serves as the home for Seton Hall's women's NCAA basketball team on the university’s campus. Russell's Pirates appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) seven times and won their first NIT title in 1953.

The Seton Hall Pirates have made the NCAA Tournament final once, in 1989 when they fell to Michigan in overtime. The team has won three conference tournament titles and four regular-season conference championships. In total, they’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 times. Across Seton Hall’s 19 total NIT appearances, the Pirates have won twice, in 1953 and 2024.

Since 1948, 31 Seton Hall Pirates have been drafted into the NBA, including NBA champions Bobby Wanzer, Bob Davies and Andrew Gaze. As a member of the Big East conference since the 1979-80 season, Seton Hall counts among its rivals their fellow "Catholic Seven" universities on the East Coast.

  • could have skipped this one

by jessej on 12/12/17Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 1 out of 5

Start time was initially advertised as 12 pm. After ticket purchase it was switched to 3 pm - effectively screwing up my evening plans. Had they advertised the 3 pm start time i would have passed. Purchased floor seats which happened to be behind the cheerleaders so i had a blocked view for most of the first game

  • An annual event

by JohnHyman on 3/2/16Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 3 out of 5

It's always fun to attend this game. It's too bad that Xavier was so flat or the game would have been more competitive.

  • Concession line didn't move

    by SeanM81 on 2/9/16Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 3 out of 5

Everything about the seats and cleanliness in general was good. Only complaint was that when we went to get food at the end of the 1st half we had to get off the line that never moved to make it back for the beginning of the 2nd half. The workers didn't know how to handle the crowd of people I guess because they were moving so slow and we didn't even get anything to eat since we had to just go back to our seats so we didn't miss the game.

  • Close till the final minute!

by OscarLove on 1/23/16Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

Good entertainment, at the Prudential Center, on Wed, Jan 20. Undefeated Villanova opened the game hitting 3 pointers one after another making it difficult for the Hall. But the resilient Hall matched them, basket for basket, but not with 3 pointers. The Hall were never out of the game, at any time, by keeping the score close. At half time it was almost a tie. In the second half, despite some players showing signs of fatigue, the score remained close until the final minutes. A lot of free throw shooting went on, and a lot of personal fouls were called by the refs. Finally, the Hall had trouble scoring in the final minutes resulting in another victory for undefeated Villanova.

  • Nice Game

by PirateBlue on 12/24/15Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

Entertaining game! Good food choices. Good value for the money!

  • College Hoops, Rock On Pirates

    by Re2pect on 2/14/15Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

This College game in the history of the Big east is a big rivalry. The students rose up along with all the volunteers and student athletes. This season when faced with fear the Pirate athlete has questioned the system. Rock On Pirates On top of the entrance to the home of the Seton Hall Pirates. Worth every moment of having the opportunity to visualize the joy and excitement up close of kids being kids.

  • GREAT EXPERIENCE , NICE SEATS

by MEMALDON on 2/3/15Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

This was our first experience with a collegiate DI basketball game and for me and my family it was great, the view from our seats was excellent, and the hole experience was worth the value. I will just recommend them open more concessions as the line was large

  • Seton Hall Pirates Home Games

  • A Great Game on a very cold night!

by OscarLove on 1/16/15Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

This game went into overtime in order to decide the winner. It was a very entertaining game, with both teams making difficult shots throughout the night and never giving up.

  • Nice Venue

    by bozfan2 on 1/6/15Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

We sat at the corner of the court 8 rows up and the view was very good. The seats were wide and comfortable, unlike many venues. The staff at the Prudential Center were all rather friendly. One negative was that several concessions stands weren't open, so it create lines at all vendor locations that weren't necessary. I don't like standing in line to spend money!!!

  • Go Hall !!
