Small town charm
by Airers on 12/8/12Warner Theatre - WashingtonThe Washington Ballet isn't your neighborhood ballet school; it's for the Nation's Capital. But despite this, the performance gave me that intimate quality that you can only, generally, find at neighborhood performances. Rather than the stuffy, serious ballet performances of touring ballet companies you can see elsewhere, this performance made me feel comfortable and welcomed. The staff at the theatre were fantastic, friendly, and very helpful. The audience was involved and happy to laugh and applaud when necessary (sometimes you don't get this type of a reaction at other theatre's perfomances) but I believe it's because this ballet company is local and the people seeing it are local. They take pride in TWB and you can see that by how they behave as an audience. The ballet itself was quite small, the stage was small as well, but they worked wonderfully with the small space and I was smiling through the entire thing. The costumes and settings were beautiful and the American history mingled into the Nutcracker was great to see (Red coats for the rat king's army... blue for the nutcrackers, very Revolutionary War!). And all dancers had their chance to shine -- right down tot he tiny kids who stared as flowers, bumblebees, clowns or angels. I enjoyed the ballet from start to finish; it left me in the holiday season while before stepping into the theatre I had none.
