San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy again in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Western Conference Finals four times.

San Jose Sharks at SAP Center

The San Jose Sharks have made the SAP Center in San Jose their home since 1993. The "Shark Tank," as it is affectionately known, is one of the most raucous buildings in the league. In 2006, the SAP Center, which also hosts concert events year-round in addition to hockey, sold 633,435 tickets to non-sporting events — the most out of any venue in the Western United States and fourth-highest in the world.

Very bad fan experience (5th time)

by Greg on 11/22/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The building does not care about their fans, people still walk around the stairway and aisles during play, a lot of drunk people walking around so they are not keeping tabs on people who are completely inebriated. Had a drunk individual fall down the stairs spill beer all over us because he was drunk, they gave him more beer because he spilled them and he came down the stairs a second time and Spilled more beer on people and rolled down about three rows because he fell. Very bad Fan Experience, very unprofessional

I went to my event, expecting a particular result, and I got it

GREAT TO BE BACK AT THE SHARK TANK.

by Rui on 11/8/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Took two of my teen sons and we were three aisles away from the home players box. Super fun and the venue was clean, the food choices were awesome and the overall experience was outstanding. The only glitch was on the confirmation for the pre-paid A-B-C parking where I only received the QR code via e-mail during the game not before I needed it to enter the parking lot. No issues since the personnel accepted my printed receipt without the QR.

    Thanks!

by C.C on 11/1/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

I bought tickets to attend the Hockey game Tampa vs San Jose back in July, not knowing that I would be having knee surgery in October. We still attended the game! When we arrived the staff was very kind and helpful as I am still in a brace and using crutches. They even informed me that if I couldn’t get to my seats they would accommodate me. Just wanted to say thank you to all the staff! We had a great experience.

    Great

by SteveD on 11/1/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Great experience. Learned about how the seating works. Will pay more attention to the rows and seating assignments to make it easier to get in and out of. Worst part of the day was that the sharks lost the game with a minute remaining

So nice to be back at the tank watching the boys in teal!

by Kbaptiste on 11/1/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

We were so happy to be in the shark tank again. Loved the fact that our club level tickets were back to allowing us to skip the long security lines to get in. Enjoyed our most favorite turkey sandwich's before the game. The Shark's store did not seem to have much in the way of new & exciting items, was doing early Christmas shopping for a new hat but was not impressed with selection. The boys did not win but the game was exciting and we look forward to the next one.

    Concessions Need Improvement

by B. W. on 11/1/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Twice we waited in line for 10+ minutes only to be told they were out of food. SAP either needs more concessions or to demand better performance of the ones they have.

    Great Game & Venue

by DeeDee on 10/31/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

We arrived early, staff organized entry lines, so we had quick entry once doors opened. Wide variety of food/drink but pricey. Our seats were great, we had unobstructed view, but that's true throughout the arena.

    Should be better.

by Dog on 10/18/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Terrible experience. Poor staffing getting into building. Few concession choices; ridiculous lines. Extremely congested concourse. Fan fair was embarrassing…outright disappointed with sharks hockey and SAP.

SAP Center is an absolute train wreck of an experience.

by ApostleScot on 10/17/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Spent $160 easy on two (2) tickets. Concessions ran out of food after Period 1. Not just 1 concession but 4! 20 minutes after the first puck drops...no food. REALLY?! Queue line just to get in the Arena took 40 mins. REALLY?! 40 mins to get in the venue due to metal scanners and poor signage entrance signage. SAP Center is a disaster, stay away, take your 100's of USD and go out to eat instead. Absolute train wreck of an experience.

    Best first game ever!

by JobraKai on 9/28/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

It was my 5 year olds first live hockey game and first sharks game. We got to watch the warm up skate down by the glass, got a visit and picture with Sharkie and even had someone give us a big popcorn bucket for free! It was an epic day and great first hockey game for my son!

    Great time out!

by Mr. B on 5/1/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Got there early to take a walk around the area. Saw the new Barack Obama Blvd sign behind the arena. The park across the street looked a bit sad and needs maintenance. Door security was very quick and easy, and I was inside in no time. Good old SJ arena - still looks nice inside. Got to my seat with plenty of time and relaxed to some pre game tunes. Soon enough the game started and it was a blast! Even though we came up short in the end, I can't wait until next season! Very kid and family friendly these days, much more so than a niners game. I'll be taking my daughter next season!

    Fantastic experiance.

by Brick Houzz on 4/5/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Using the app and access to the tank couldn't be easier. Really miss not having a paper ticket for the scrap book but i guess that just makes me old. A point that only confirms that the process is easy if a person of my age can use it without having to get my 11 year old walk me through it. Still think your gouging us on your service charges if I'm being totally honest. :)

    Avs Win!!!

by Satyrlicious on 3/25/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Kindly tacky the Sharks fan did the “Avs you suck” right after moment to address war in Ukraine. Food was kinda off that night (bland, uninspired) & it was hard to see what beers each station had

    Seating

by Sparky on 3/21/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The sharks game itself was awesome. We sat at section 101 row 4 behind visitor bench, these were not good seat very hard to see the game due to the coaches being in the way. People behind us mad it very hard to enjoy the game they were ALWAYS talking and not even about the game.

    SJ Sharks - Jumbo's Return

by Joey on 3/18/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Amazing experience. Sat in the 4th row in the lower bowl and had a great time. Experiencing the game on tv doesn't conapre to sitting that close in person!
