San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy again in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Western Conference Finals four times.

San Jose Sharks at SAP Center

The San Jose Sharks have made the SAP Center in San Jose their home since 1993. The "Shark Tank," as it is affectionately known, is one of the most raucous buildings in the league. In 2006, the SAP Center, which also hosts concert events year-round in addition to hockey, sold 633,435 tickets to non-sporting events — the most out of any venue in the Western United States and fourth-highest in the world.

Almost there, not quite good enough

by Nj 👿 fan on 1/19/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

As a devils fan, I thought the sharks played well. Unfortunately they have a bad habit of losing games late. The crowd was into it, something you don't pick up on broadcasts. I was a sharks fan for many years. But then I don't like alot of their personnel moves lately Erik Karlsson is brilliant at times.

    Sharks absolutely pummelled

by Sockethead on 1/16/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The Sharks lost 7-1 to the Oilers. It felt like a minor league team versus all stars. McDavid is a beast.

    crowd control is really bad!

by carolg on 1/16/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The lines to get in were far too slow! It took minutes(not seconds) to scan tickets. Then to get a bottle of water and popcorn, took almost an entire period of the game. The line for Ritas was 60 people deep.

    Terrible team

by Dean on 1/16/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The last couple games I went to were horrible. The game against the Oilers was embarrassing. The Sharks are no longer a fun and entertaining team to speak money to watch. We’ll be passing in Sharks games until they turn things around — whenever that is.

    Great Experience

by Tom H. on 1/10/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

This was my first live hockey game since the early 90’s. What a wonderful experience. The SAP Center is a great venue. The food is awesome and the staff working the game was very helpful and professional.

Great experience except for the score

by Steve D on 1/10/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Shout out to Tammy, Leexa and Jennifer in the blue jackets. My wife has back issues and they were so helpful getting to the correct seats as well as Tammy getting a wheel chair to take the wife from section 220 all the way out to the door of our car. The best.

    Almost five stars

by DQ fan on 1/1/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

We came to support coach Quinn. (As Rangers fans, we were embarrassed by the boos he got when he returned to msg with the sharks). We had a wonderful experience, except at the snack line. We were in line for 30+ minutes just to get 2 bottled waters, and missed 1/2 of the second period!

    Good

by DG on 1/1/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

My experience was good. The only issue I have every time I go to these games is that there needs to be clear signage at the entrance. For example, many people were unclear as to which entry lines were for club members, CLEAR, general admission and so on. PLEASE FIX THIS!

    A shark Bite

by Nicole on 1/1/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

This was our 2nd sharks game! So much fun. Crowd is always entertaining. Even seated in between the opposing teams fans, had a great time. Drinks and food priced like every other sports venue. Lines go by fast. Very smooth and organized entertainment! Can’t wait for our next game!

The game was amazing. I loved every part of it although I am a Calgary Flames fan and they did not have Calgary Flames merchandise.

    So much fun!!!!

by Michelle on 12/21/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The stadium is great. The vendors are quick. The Sharks aren't doing very well this season😭. But it's always so much fun to go to a live game & cheer the guys on & heckle the other team. You can get great seats for cheap prices.

SAP Center Sharks needs more ushers.

by XOXOXO on 11/28/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

They must be having a real hard time hiring staff. There were NO ushers managing the upper bowl. There were nearly a couple fights/brawls that were barely avoided, no thanks to NO ushers managing the situation.

Kings fan in The Bay Area

by Robs on 11/28/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

First time at this arena. I have to say that I truly enjoyed the atmosphere there. My daughter & I came up for the holiday weekend and didn’t know what to expect. In actuality, it was a great experience, one so that we may do that trip again!

    Arena experience sucks!

by DQOT on 11/28/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Entry into the SAP Center was the easiest and best part of the experience. After more than 25 years as season ticket holders, we haven’t been to a home game since before the pandemic and are not in a hurry to return. The lack of ushers was the worst. People coming and going at all times, despite the announcements to “wait until a stop in play” was more than irritating. I’m convinced that the Sharks are more interested in pandering to those who want to party at the expense of those who are actually hockey fans.

Ushers need to do their job

by SJS Fan on 11/23/22SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Almost every game I go to, people lean so far forward in their seats, regardless of the scoreboard warning, that I can never see half the ice. Ushers, please observe your sections and remind people to sit back in their seats, because whenever I ask, people get upset with me, no matter how nicely I ask. I would highly recommend a scoreboard video showing what happens to the view of someone behind the person that leans forward. That would be more effective than the text notice.
