San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 21 times.

  • Section 216 row 3 seats 9-10 review

by Jason J on 11/4/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were great had a great view of the shark head and can hear the player’s voices and skates. But the seats very close together which makes you feel cramped in with other fans with no cup holders for drinks since there is a wired wall that blocks off for the rows 1-2 but overall great seats and the sharks won in overtime 3-2 but I would recommend these seats for anyone who wants to get closer to the action but also very expensive for two seats. 9/10

  • Sharks games are always the best.

by Tury on 10/31/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Going to Sharks games is always my favorite thing to do. We try to go once a season, but this time it might be different. I bought over $500 at the shop and was given vouchers for more future tickets. SAP center is always inviting and everyone is professional and friendly. I look forward to returning asap. Thanks everyone.

  • Shark Carolina hurricane game

by Dennis on 10/18/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Overall experience was excellent. Enjoyed the facility and it really helped that the Hurricanes won the game. Would have liked that when I bought the tickets through Ticketmaster it indicated that I could get into a private club and private entrance Still outstanding event

  • Good, buy VERY expensive

by Bob on 10/14/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

$300 plus per ticket, $50 bucks for a burger fries and beer. $18 for a jack and coke. I don't think I will be back

  • Amazing experience

by Moe on 10/14/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first hockey game ever and honestly I m a football fan. This was one of the best sporting events I been to. Exciting high energy and great fans. I would recommend getting as close to the glass as you can. Just avoid seats directly behind the players cause it makes it hard to see. I will do it again

  • The Shark Tank has still got it!

by jct1010 on 10/12/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We had club seats in section 128. The club entry on Santa Clara Street was line free and made us feel special. The club was busy, but definitely less crowded than the concourse. There was a great variety of food choices, but we ultimately decided to get Korean BBQ on the concourse at section 120. It was the right choice. The spicy pork was seasoned and cooked to perfection, over a plentiful bed of rice & vegetables. All of the staff were super friendly and very accommodating for my service dog. We’ll definitely be back for more Sharks games.

  • Great event, players very up front

  • Awesome season closer

by Johnny on 4/19/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

I feel bad the the Sharks are in 8th place in their division, but I am a diehard fan who believes that they have invested in their future with quite young players. Logan Couture was there for the final game of the season. Thanks Logan for all of your years of hard play!

  • Really nice show! Despite the not so good result for Sharks!

by pagao on 4/19/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The venue is great and the entire show worth it! I really recommend!

  • Outstanding seats!

by K. Roberson on 4/8/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

To begin with, this was the only game we were able to attend since last season, and that day was my husband's birthday! Reserving a parking spot thru Spothero was a nightmare, but L. Pathe from the Sharks parking management helped to.solve those problems. Once inside the SAP Center, our seats were easy to find (4 rows up from the ice), with only a few other seats in our row. The seats were #2 & 3 with the seats on either side occupied. I sat in seat #3, and my seat had some kind of sticky Carmel on the seat that stuck to my Blue jeans as soon as I sat down. The sound was quieter than where we sat before and during the game, we were blasted by cold air coming from above our heads. I know I sound like I am complaining, but as a fan of the Sharks for many, many years, I thought my opinion on certain aspects of the game experience would want to be known by those in management. Thank you for letting me express my opinion.

  • Exceptional Experience

  • Sharks V. Rangers

by Authentic Sharks Fan on 4/1/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was so efficiently done! Parking, security, entry/exit, restroom locations. Very friendly staff. There's always the guest sitting close by that appreciates NOTHING: leaves a ton of trash, is rude to everyone, and just doesn't realize this is a social event. Appreciated the reminders at the start about respect and teamwork among fans and guests. Thank you for making our visit truly enjoyable!

  • Amazing game!

by GoLeafsGo on 4/1/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Pre purchased parking so it was easy to get into the lot, park my car and enter the arena all within 10 minutes. Everyone was friendly. Will come back for another hockey game.

  • $250 a ticket to sit in folding chairs

by MH on 3/18/25SAP Center at San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

Nowhere did it say the seats/arena were under construction and that the seats I was purchasing were folding chairs, for $250 each.
