Just the right mix of traditional holiday songs, a bit of history / classic, humor and dancing
So much talent. What a fun show! Can't wait until next year.
Great show! Highly recommended it to all of our friends.
To start, the show is performed in the wonderful Balboa Theater. The music was grand, and sung with enthusiasm, what a way to get the holiday sprit flowing! A way to improve the show would be to use the wonderful Wonder Morton Organ. It is such a jewel of the theater, and should be used before, during the show, during the break, and as people leave the theater.
This is a fun, relaxed choir performance with great vocals. Expect to hear classic and modern versions of holiday carols, as well as see some unnecessary/amateurish acting and dance choreography.
The grand Balboa Theater was the perfect venue for this amazing show. From the Opening medley of Holiday favorites to the Baptist Spiritual that had everyone on their feet clapping and singing with the chorus, this show was one great demonstration of the talent and preparation that the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus puts into their concerts. We'll be going every holiday season to give our December that great San Diego feeling of love and caring for our community and our loved ones... Bravo!
I enjoyed most of the music. Not a fan of chorale singing from a musical "show" chorus, If I wanted that I would have gone elsewhere. I don't believe I got my moneys worth. The prices of tickets...and then you tell the audience you gave away a section to youth???? Those students could have volunteered or done a project for the unfortunate in our community so we who paid a lot...would have felt better.
This was our first exposure to the SDGMC and we liked it. We have been to San Francisco's and Seattle's a number of times and found the singing to be comparable. The choreography however needs a lot of work and the clothing that they wear needs to be scrutinized a bit more. The slacks that they wore in the second half of the show needed a lot of tailoring and they all need to be wearing the same shoes. They looked a bit rag tag. I understand that it is non profit and the guys are all volunteers, but to put on a show like this at a major venue they need to take a look at what they are wearing. Overall though we had a great time and will return for their future performances. One last note, we would have liked to have heard a larger variety of traditional Christmas songs than were included in the show.
We haven't seen this chorus for several years and we're delighted to see that their numbers have swelled to about 150 singers. You'd never know that this is a volunteer organization. They are on par with any professional group of singers I've ever heard. This event will become a "must do" in our household yearly.
Great show!!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Love the music, singing and most of the dance numbers. The smaller group sings were amazing. These guys are talented. Drag queens were way fun.
The San Diego Gay Men's Chorus Presents: Luv Madonna exceeded my expectations! Whether you are straight or gay, the audience seemed to have a great time listening to the melodic and spirited renditions of Madonna's hit songs. This was the first time I had attended a performance by the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus and I am looking forward to attending other performances in the future!
MY first time. I thought the music (the Chorus) was wonderful, the soloist GREAT. the dancers were HORRIBLE THEY WERE A CONSTANT DISTRACTION FROM THE SINGING. I FINALLY JUST CLOSED MY EYES AS DID MY GUEST SO WE COULD CONSENTRATE ON THE SINGING. PLEASE PLEASE DO AWAY WITH THE DANCING VERY UNNEEDED. IF IT WAS SUSPOSED TO BE FUNNY IT WAS NOT AND IF IT WAS SUPOSED TO BE PRETTY IT WAS NOT. The lights that hit the audience were blinding in my seat. Also the solos during Don't cry for me Argentina, I could barely here.
I was so impressed with the improvements of the SD Gay Men's Chorus since new director RC Haus arrived. I LOVE the fact that the chorus now uses REAL musicians rather than singing along to canned music; the Chorale, the new small "masterworks" group is solid and sounds good already; but the main improvement was the addition of the dance team. Their interesting and eye catching movements during each piece added a level of excitement not before seen. It is so much better than another flash of "jazz hands" from the chorus. I am so excited to see how much more RC will bring to the group after this, his first concert. He mentioned that he will be starting a youth LGBT Chorus to join the men and I look forward to that. Congratulations to the NEW SD Gay Men's Chorus. You are moving in a great direction.
The best Gay Men's Chorus Concert yet. We had season tickets to D.C. and Palm Springs Gay Men Chorus and this exceeded both of those groups. The Dance Group added to the experience.
This show was really fantastic! The whole chorus was phenomenal. I got goose bumps several times! The theater venue was pretty good - staff was kind and friendly...drinks are way too expensive.
We sit down, relax knowing that we are in for a special treat before each and every show. The Nutcracker (Men in Tights) was no exception. It was, however, exceptional. We loved it. Have a Merry Christmas. We can hardly wait to see what you have in store for us in 2014.
Loved it! Wonderful traditional choral music mixed with laugh at loud humor. Gonna see it again today:)
Hit just the right balance of traditional chorale and spicy/spirited engagement! Thank you, SDGMC, and everyone behind the scenes!
Beautiful chorals were followed by playful and fun interpretations. A really fun show and a fun audience as well.
