  • Another Triumph!

by Gaypenguin on 5/1/25Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Another most enjoyable concert. It wasn't flashy or particularly dynamic, (except for "You Can't Stop the Beat"at the end), but that's OK. It didn't need to be. It was nice to sit back, enjoy 20 classic show tunes, enjoy the dancers, and let the music tell its story. The chorus was pitch perfect and professional. It was wonderful to once again have a physical concert program. Another great thing was that there were no people cat-calling from the audience to their friends in the chorus. Interesting aside: when we arrived, a theater rep offered to upgrade our seats from the balcony to the orchestra level for free. We didn't hesitate. The Balboa Theater is a classic, and it's unfortunate the the SDGMC will be moving elsewhere for furture concerts. They left the theater on a high note! And it was a good signature signoff for departing artistic director, Dr. Charles Beale.

  • Chorus Performed Perfectly!

by SDCyclist on 5/1/25Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, what a shame there were only two performances because, this show could have sold out another time once word of mouth got around. First, show tunes ... what grown up theater kid does not like them. The selections were well rounded, covering a variety of styles including Sondheim (my personal favorites). Next, the Chorus ... wow wow wow! A large chorus like the SDGMC can quickly get out of hand if not well prepared and we could hear every word, sung in tune and together. The number of female singers is growing and making a great addition to the SDGmensChorus ... I know, it's complicated, but just go with it because it's working well. And, well done Charlie Beale, your direction was perfect! Next, the soloists ... all so well sung and appropriately chosen. Of course the dancers! They added so much to the show and performed beautifully. I remember the day when the chorus had dance numbers, just to have dance numbers, but this dance group added to the show without being distracting. Loved the tap number in Turn it Off from Book of Mormon. Finally, the orchestra. They all did a yeoman's job without overwhelming the Chorus... well done! The saddest thing, however, is saying farewell to Artistic Director Charlie Bealle. He has found his footing with the Chorus, only getting better as each show progressed. His talent will be missed terribly, but glad I have gotten to enjoy all of his shows. So, overall, the Chorus was spectacular as was the Broadway Show Tunes Show! Looking forward to the next show already.

  • The Show Tune Show

by Dr. V on 4/29/25Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Located the Balboa Theatre, this SDGMC performance was a blast. My husband and I had front row tickets (absolutely worth it). The theme was Broadway showtunes and the talented choir definitely did not disappoint. Vocals were on point - major kudos to the all the soloists. (And a an applause to the band. As a front row attendee, I was able to really see you all in action. Phenomenal talent - all of you.) Dancers added so much fun and energy to the music. Of course, the occasional cheeky joke or moment added just enough spice to keep the joy alive. A couple of my favorite memories: a song a long to the Do-Re-Mi song from Sound of Music, and the dance along to the Time Warp. It was a great time laughing, singing, and dancing along with the choir, performers, my friends, and the audience. I laughed, I cried, I did cardio - What a show! I’m looking forward to the next!

  • Fantastic!

The show was fantastic! Love show tunes (who doesn't, right?). Loved the dancing, too. The sing-a-longs were just perfect!

  • SDGMC Steps out of the Box Again

by SDCyclist on 12/22/24Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Last Sunday's San Diego Gay Men's Chorus holiday concert once again hit it out of the park. Artistic Director Charlie Beale moved the chorus needle in yet another direction by introducing a series of traditional holiday songs with mostly Big Band arrangements. The Chorus was exceptional, with every word sung together and in tune. Kudos to the soloists too. Charlie has experimented with the location of the band, from in the orchestra pit, to the wings, raised up in the back and this time, front row center on the chorus risers. I loved this and the sound guy did a great job of not overwhelming the audience by favoring band over chorus. The band performed excellently with many well solos given to various instruments. I also liked that each dance number was not only delightfully performed, but followed a story (as dance should rather than dancing just for dance sake). They really added to the overall feel of the concert. I have either performed in or seen every GMC show for the past 10 years and, while RC Haus was a fine artistic director, the shows became predictable. Charlie continues to innovate, using his very high GMC directing pedigree to giving the audience something new to look forward to with every show. If you have not seen the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus for a while, check them out and be surprised and delighted. Their spring concert will be an omage to Show Tunes, which is always a crowd pleaser .... let's see what Charlie does next.

  • Chorus and More

by Holidays Have Begun on 12/18/24Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Loved, for the most part, the choices of music. Not a big jazz fan but all were done very well. Dancers were fantastic and really added to the entire performance. Very professional. Not sure the lighting did much if anything for the show. Hard to get to the support table when the hall is so narrow. BUT not sure there is another option.

  • $ expensive for what it is

by JPnSD on 12/18/24Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

Fun event. Solos were meh except for two (you know who you were from audience response :). First and last songs were the best. Expensive for what it is. I won't be back.
