This was a fantastic show. I grew up with Choirs in church and really miss them. This was a great show filled with traditional music as well as fun variations of songs. The artistic director was a great personality that really made the show. This was my first time and will become an annual tradition for me and my family.
wow!!! never a disappointing moment from the sdgmc.
SDGMC never fails to be fantastic entertainment. Now looking forward to the holiday show in December.
These guys always give a delightful show: they are so very happy and confident and the joy is in watching them enjoy themselves so much. You just feel as though you are part of their family, cheering them on. They always find creative and clever ways to liven up the show - from choreography and costumes to props: fabulous showmanship! Musically: the arrangements in this show were lovely. The voices (solos) were not always strong and there was not as much evidence of true 4-part harmony as I personally would like, but there were also some very good musical moments, and the songs are engaging by themselves. Taken as a whole, it was definitely a show I appreciated and will remember!
The Beatles were great, but the Gay Men's Choir took their songs to an even higher level!
The purity of the voices, the variety of music, the acoustics of the Balboa Theatre all combined to make an unforgettable experience on Saturday night. The men really seemed to enjoy singing and feeling the music, which inspired the varied audience (as if it needed any inspiration)! The costume changes were fun.
I loved, loved, loved this show. How many times did I cry? At least three. We really enjoyed the singing, dancing...but especially the human factor--the emotional pull that separates a group like this from all others.
The Chorus has improved greatly under the new Artistic Director. He has a great sense of humor, yet is very professional. Although I think the choreography is overdone, I loved the performance.
"Greatest Hits--Volume One," the latest concert presented by the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus on April 18, 2015 was, simly, incredible! It was not just a classy and jazzy musical evening but a journey through gay history detailing the ups and downs of the LGBT experience via the lives of the chorus members of San Diego. It was an epic event featuring snappy songs, delightful dancing, informative real-life videos, clever comedic moments , tear-wrenching tragic turns and, even a drag queen ("dah" - thank RC for that comment!) The diverse musical performances ranged from rollicking rock & roll and eye & ear-popping popular classics to a powerful tavern cantata in Latin to whimsical song spoofs and goofs ably performed by the equally diverse SDGMC members! The over-whelmingly emotional evening ran the gamut from a song "One Voice" first sung by the SDGMC thirty years ago and featuring the only original chorus member remaining to a salute to same sex marriage with the anthem "Marry Me" with the spouses of the chorus members came onstage to join their partners there along with the married people in the audience standing in support! There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Bravo guys!
Each performance is professional and entertaining and I never miss their shows.
I thought the singing and music was wonderful. Unfortunately, I thought the dancing distracted from the event more that enhanced the experience. There was too much dancing and honestly, it was average at best. I know these men work hard to learn the steps and perform, I appreciate that. The only dance number that was entertaining and complimented the show was the rock & roll piece. Otherwise, I thought it was very distracting.
The chorus is terrific. Just dont undertstand the dancers. They are not very good and the yellow pants were tacky. They take away from the professionalism of the production.
Excellent performance; funny, moving and entertaining. Only criticism...too short, could have listened all night!
The concert was great. I liked it very much, and I have been to almost all the holiday concerts in the past 18 years or so. One challenge the chorus faces is distractions during the concert. One young person seated near me had to have the usher come over before the first act ended and demand that he turn off his cell phone. He had been on it the entire first act. My partner commented that it was probably one of the young people given a free ticket. But I do not know for sure. Other young people were very grateful of course and respected those of us that did pay a good amount to see the concert sans interruptions. Although some lady did keep talking during songs who sat behind me, and she was an adult, I think. About 8 people around her at one point shushed the heck of of her until she stopped. Anyway, just some honest feedback.
A great way to start the holidays.Saw them at Dec Nights, had to see the whole show. It was amazing. We'll see them again.
This group always puts on a great holiday show, but this year was the best ever! There is nothing else like it in San Diego. Parts of it were really funny (like the Santa singing Jingle Bells in opera style), some of it was moving (like the sign language version of Silent Night) and some of it made you want to jump up and dance in the aisles, like the encore spiritual. Our group of nine people--gay, straight, single and married, male and female (yes, we are a mixed lot!)--absolutely loved it and started talking about plans to come back for future shows. We all had BIG SMILES on our faces as we left the theatre. What also makes a big impression on me is that these singers are all volunteers and are doing this for the love of music and as their way to contribute to the community. It shows on their faces. They are out trying to make the world a better place--what a great thing.
What a wonderful holiday treat for all who attended! Great music....a real show!
omg amazing!!!!! I laughed, I sang, I cried. The show was outstanding. I can not wait TIL the next one.
My husband and I have been attending the San Diego Gay Mens Chorus concerts since we moved to San Diego, way back in 1990! This was, by far and away the VERY best Christmas Concert that we have ever seen!!! Bob Lehman must be praised for the outstanding work he has been done to bring this group of very dedicated and talented men, to where they are today. RC Haus the new Executive Director put on a show that will be difficult to ever top (but we know he will next year!!!) We loved the selection of pieces, the wonderful dance numbers and the blend of the men's voices, that RC has brought the group to today. We were sitting next to a couple who had never been to a SDGMC concert before. They were absolutely blown away by what they saw and said that they will make this an annual holiday event for them. We will be joining them, next and every year after.
