San Antonio Spurs History

The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.

The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.

The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.

On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

  • Great time! Super fun!

    by M. V. on 4/9/23Moody Center ATX - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time at the Spurs game. What a treat! Game was exciting, Loved seeing the Coyote, the announcer was motivating and the Spurs Hype Squad, and the gymnast and dog were super entertaining. Seats all had cup holders and the seat had a generous width. I didn't feel like my neighbor was on top of me. Bathrooms were clean and plentiful. Prices were high, especially for beer. $15 for food, but $18 for the beer, but I liked the variety of beer. More space needs to be set aside for Rideshare pickup, it was a zoo and we deliberately left very late.

Had a great time at the San Antonio Spurs game at the Moody Center! Great setup for a ball game!

  • Love my Spurs but...

    by Spursfan89 on 4/9/23Moody Center ATX - AustinRating: 1 out of 5

The Spurs game was good but the arena doesn't work . The parking was trash. If the Spurs organization does anything in Austin again they need a arena with parking on the premises. Not where you have to walk 20-30 mins to the gym. Most of the food concessions were closing up at the end of haftime that's not good, but the Moody Center is not a good place for the San Antonio Spurs to play.

  • Great experience

by Alexandre on 4/1/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I thought everything was well planned. The parking could be improved through best signaling. I put my car at Lot 6, but especificaly about this place was a little bit to find. But It was a very little detail. The staff was incredible. Congrats!

  • Great Arena Great Experience

    by JB23 on 3/15/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Haven’t seen the Spurs play in SA in 10+ years and I loved it. The arena is so updated. We bought the add 2 beers with our tickets and the only downside to it was the line. You can only go to one section in the entire stadium to get them. Then the line took forever. It was a still a great deal and would do it again. Wish we could have not missed almost an entire quarter to get beer is my only complaint.

  • New Order put on an AMAZING SHOW!!!!!!

by 80s Music Fanatic! on 3/13/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I treated 10 family members (all ages - 13-50s) to the show!...all 80s music fanatics, NEW ORDER being one of the ELITE groups!! We all had an amazing time. The crowd was AWESOME...everyone had a grand ol time, singing, dancing, enjoyed wearing 80s attire and costumes...re-living the 80s all over again. The crowd was electrifying, LOUD, enthusiastic, truly enjoying the music. San Antonio embraced NEW ORDER TEXAS STYLE...New Order saw and felt it! The evening was magical and memorable! Thank you New Order!!!

  • Enjoyed the game and the experience.

    by N/A on 3/7/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The parking was great for the price. We couldn't pull up our mobile tickets but the lady working in the Ticket Conflict booth was so nice and courteous. She took my information found our seats in the system and printed us out 2 paper tickets, the people working the concessions were also very nice. Overall it was a great game experience.

  • 76ers at Spurs

by Karebear on 2/6/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I was 8 rows from the floor and had the best time! I was rooting for the away team and was surrounded by very friendly Spurs fans! I would do this again

  • They advertised bobble heads but ran out.

by Jo on 2/4/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

They ran out of bobble heads which was main reason some people were attending this game. They ran out an hour before game started. One of they reps stated that they only had 10,000 bobble heads yet arena was half empty so that excuse did not make mathematically sense.

  • Had a great time

by Juan on 2/4/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Easy to park, entrance not far from lot 3, seats were really good, and didnt have a difficult time leaving the lot at the end of the game. Great experience over all.

  • Disappointed

by Vangie on 1/24/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

I know I didn't pay a lot for my tickets, but very disappointed how far away the court was. I sat in Sec 143 and had to watch the game on the jumbo Trom. I could have just stayed home and watched it and have a better view. Very disappointed.

  • Transport was horrible

    by T. W. on 1/23/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great. The transport and VIA bus was horrible. They encouraged everyone to take the bus. It was great that so many people did. Unfortunately VIA was under prepared and didn't have enough buses available both going to the game and coming back.

  • Where does this line Start!!??

by Ted on 1/20/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

We knew that traffic and crowding was going to be Horrendous, but we really wanted to be there. So, we booked an UBER Serve to take us there but they had trouble figuring out where to drop us off due to Lack of Signage. It was really nightmarish after the game to get them to a pick up point. I'm a disabled retired Army Vet and was really challenged by all the walking to find a pick up point across to Parking Lot D. This old vet got seats in the 3rd Level which calls for a long trip up and down lots of stairs. I did find an elevator to go up but of course the lines and waits were huge to get into an elevator up to 3rd level. I was able to get myself to struggle down the stairs. My healthy young granddaughter was able to get upstairs & down stairs but them waited 45 minutes in line to get her Margaritas!! Overall though, enjoyed the whole experience.

  • Great time, just not able to see well

by Txboyz on 1/19/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

My son and I had a great time, we were just a little disappointed on not being able to see so. We were in the 200 section and the court was so small to us and not a good view for those of us sitting back that far. We understand it was not at the usual place they play but we were really to be attending.

  • Ok

by Sca on 1/19/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

My first nba game, it was ok, the stadium was half empty so probably the ticket price is excessive

  • Had to leave before game started

by Kari on 1/18/23AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

My 2 year old son got very sick before the game started and started vomiting and I was trying to get assistance to get my money back for not even seeing the game and no one could off gave me an answer.
