San Antonio Spurs History

The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.

The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.

The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.

On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

Young team woes...but a great game. Came back with less than minute left and had chance to steal for the win. Just over the fingertips of Sochan...Love my Spurs...GO SPURS GO!

  • Austin Spurs

Absolutely fantastic experience. This review is less about the Spurs and more about The Moody Center and City of Austin. Austin NEEDS an NBA team.

The St Paddy’s day party was at the Moody Center when the San Antonio Spurs beat the Brooklyn Nets in overtime. The sold out crowd were on their feet to cheer on the Spurs. Not only was it a fantastic game to watch, the entertainment throughout the game thrilled the crowd. ☘️☘️☘️🏀🏀🏀

  • Entertainment vs Cost

by Nate on 3/21/24Moody Center ATX - AustinRating: 4 out of 5

Purchasing process is smooth and easy. Entertainment was awesome and entertaining, but have to say, that the expenses can leave one hesitant about purchasing the next time. The combination of parking, tickets, food and drinks can be a challenge to overcome.

  • Meh

    by AllWorld54 on 3/18/24Moody Center ATX - AustinRating: 4 out of 5

    1. Took a while to access our seats. Signage was good but it was really a long walk, especially after the walk from the garage 2. The free souvenirs were kind of lame—can’t figure if they’re placemats or posters 3. The game only got competitive in the last half of the third quarter—and even then it was short-lived. We left with 5 minutes remaining in the game. Spurs offense was predictable and static, while the Spurs defense was below average—too much dribbling and threes on offense and too many uncontested shots on defense. Wemby had a meh effort. Thank goodness Jokic didn’t sit out 4. Food was good, if predictable; not on level of a MLB game in terms of options 5. Halftime show was cute but nothing I hadn’t seen before

  • Love the NBA

by Cris on 3/18/24Moody Center ATX - AustinRating: 4 out of 5

Love seeing the nba in this venue. No bad seats. The energy was lacking a bit but it’s expected from a game in a visiting city. Excited for more to come
