San Antonio Spurs History

The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.

The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.

The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.

On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

The only miss was we did not receive a t-shirt this year as in past years. I think that is a great giveaway for the season home opener. Please bring it back.

Attending a Spurs game is an absolute blast! The crowds always have a super strong energy, and the Frost Bank Center is a great venue with hardly a bad seat in the house. There are tons of fun displays and informational items that really immerse attendees in Spurs culture. It's great having a fan shop on site to buy all your favorite gear. The food options are great for an arena (they even have a Whataburger on site). My only gripe is that prices for parking are a little high. However, that appears to be a commonality with most venues these days. If you are Spurs fan, going to a game in-person is a must.

Thank you giving my family the opportunity to visit the San Antonio Spurs recently always a pleasure. My only concerns is the tickets, if they are color coded please inform which door to stand in line. We got the rather early 1pm. To find out we were standing at the wrong door and missed our opportunity to sit closer than anticipated. Our seats still were fantastic none the less, just would like a recommendation for where to stand in line to receive an even better chance next time. Thank you and GO SPURS GO 🏀🔥

  • Austin is better.

by Spurs Fan and Former Intern on 8/20/24Rating: 1 out of 5

The arena and set up is so outdated. The Spurs and City of SA have not done anything with the area around the arena. Ushers are on a power trip too at the arena. Austin and the Moody Center are a much better fan experience than SA. More games in Austin.

The level of energy and excitement is through the roof when going to Spurs games, I've been going since the late 90's when the Alamodome was their home. All throughout their championships and the years in between, always a great experience and the highest level of sportsmanship winning or losing! Go Spurs Go!!!

I love watching the Spurs live. I am from out of town and sometimes get great deals on my Spurs App. Then Ticketmaster charges so much it doubles the price. Wondering how much it costs to send an e-ticket

We got there early n had a blast with the pregame events. The hype squad made the place feel exciting. The game was an amazing experience. It went into OT. Our seats were great. We had a great view for our tickets. There is pretty much a good view anywhere in the arena. N after the game there was live music. I wish i was not super tired to have stayed n enjoyed that too.

  • Spurs v Warriors

by Ismael on 4/3/24Frost Bank Center - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Good experience and fun night. Only problem was the space, very tight and would have to get up everytime someone needed to pass. Also we arrived late because we thought the doors opened at 6 but the event was at 6. Should have read it better
