San Antonio Spurs History

The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.

The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.

The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.

On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

  • Spurs vs Trailblazers

    by L. M. on 11/19/19AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

As usual I was extremely happy with the hospitality shown by the employees of the ATT Center. However, the guards outside made me return my purse to my car because it was 1/2 inch longer than the 12” limit. I was very irritated as I thought this too close a call, but I will always go back to Spurs games.

  • All In the Family

Great experience for me and my family. The Spurs organization once again showed its class in the manner in which they handled Tony's retirement ceremony. Feeling like part of the Spurs family is not just cliché here in SA. We really felt to be part of the family. Thanks for the memories Tony!!! Merci.....and GO SPURS GO!!!

by JennyD on 11/7/19AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I took my friend to his first live NBA game ever. We had good seats and the view from everywhere was great! There are plenty of food and drink options and OMG they have Whataburger! There are vendors on each floor and they moved out orders very efficiently. The intermission activities and the music made the game just as enjoyable. He had a blast to say the least. Great job AT&T center!

  • Fun Game and Fun Vibes

by JRB on 11/6/19AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

It's extremely easy and cheap to get to the AT&T Center if you do Park & Ride, so the night was off to a great start. The food was adequate, and the upper sections are predictably quite steep. Nevertheless, the game was very entertaining!

by TxMarty on 10/31/19AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

An exciting game from start to finish with many high-point lead changes, turnovers, charging defense, and fast-action plays. The AT&T Center has many new food choices; I plan to try out a new one on each visit this year.

by Auntie Lou on 10/26/19AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

this was the first time I was able to attend the season opener and it was a special occasion, my niece's birthday, so we were very excited to be there. We were even more excited when we got to our seats and realized they were so much better than we thought they were going to be. The best part of the evening? The Spurs won! Buying tickets on Ticketmaster is always really easy.
