San Antonio Spurs History

The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.

The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.

The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.

On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

My wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly! Great venue with lots of seats with a great view of the court! Though crowded we entered the stadium quickly and safely! Their rideshare setup was effective and organized! My grandkids love the bobble heads that we received upon entry!

I was coming off a week and 1/2 of flu, along with torn ligament in knee. So the walking was a little difficult but it was enjoyable time with Manu. Miss the old guys. Getting to know the new guys. Fan shop line went quickly in spite of the # of people in and out of there.

My sons 1st Spurs game and he loved it! We all had an amazing time.

  • Too damned loud!

by JD on 4/6/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

I love the Spurs. That having been said, I gave up my season tickets several years ago after the Silver Dancers were let go. The name of the organization is Spurs Sports and Entertainment -- the Silver Dancers were a huge part of the entertainment! The biggest annoyance of all is the loud, so-called music that is played while the game is in progress. I can think of no other sport in which loud music is blaring while play is in progress. Finally, the Spurs should do something to keep fans from bringing infants and very young children to games -- unless the parents protect the tiny ones' eardrums with noise-cancelling headphones.

  • Awesome

    by Tinoae72 on 4/6/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

My family and I really enjoyed the Spurs game. It was a great time. I would recommend that the tickets that come with two beers have them poured into a souvenir cup. It was rather difficult checking in the seating area with two beers in hand and having the tickets verified.

  • I had a wonderful time at the Spurs game.

    by D-4 on 4/6/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I had a wonderful time at the Spurs game. The food was good and the staff that worked at the AT&T Center were very helpful and nice. It was my first time attending a Spurs game but will not be my last. Had an awesome time!

  • Awesome game, great show

    by M. V. on 4/5/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The game was exciting and the after show was awesome. The band was great. Only disappointing thing was we didn't receive our shirts or bobble heads for the military navy night and my husband, the veteran was bummed. The whole point was to get one. Maybe next year.

  • Great time

by Rodney on 4/4/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Purchase of tickets was easy, the game was great, and the seats were awesome! Being able to view where I was sitting made the difference.

  • Great

My son and I enjoyed the game and our seats. Everything was convenient. One thing I didn't like is how you are going cashless.

  • Spurs basketball at the AT&T center. San Antonio TX

    by JHendrix80 on 4/2/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

First off the parking was perfect. It was just a short step in the car to the entrance. The game went well but the location we were placed in Was in very top nosebleed section. I didn’t realize have never been there how far up that walk would be.

  • SPURS game 3/30 against Grizzlies

by Gibby on 4/2/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Unforgettable night and Spurs fought til the end with a little more that 5 sec in regulation. The play was set, Spurs players set, the crowd was in a frenzy. KJ missed a layup that he never would miss, just kissed it off the glass a tad too much and went off the rim. Omg, what a game! At one time we were down by as much as 18. Awesome come baby but we fell short 111-112. It was my son's 18th BD that night. Although we were crushed, it would not change that moment for anything. Go Spurs Go! 🏀

  • Excellent customer service

  • Bday Gift

by Chuck on 3/20/22AT&T Center - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed the courtside experience through the American Heart Association and we surprised our son with lower level tickets for his birthday along with with a birthday message on the jumbotron.
