San Antonio Spurs History

The story of the San Antonio Spurs began in the summer of 1973, when a group of local investors leased the Dallas Chaparrals and brought professional basketball to San Antonio. Midway through that first season, the group purchased the team outright, planting the roots of what would become one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

The Spurs spent their first three seasons in the ABA before joining the NBA in 1976, alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers. Since entering the league, San Antonio has become a model of sustained success, boasting the second-highest winning percentage (.595) among all NBA teams. Over the decades, the Spurs have captured five NBA championships and 22 division titles.

The team has honored its legends by retiring 10 jersey numbers, including Hall of Famers George "Iceman" Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—all of whom helped define generations of Spurs basketball.

The 2025–26 season marks a significant moment in Spurs history. After 29 seasons as head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has transitioned into the role of President of Basketball Operations. Stepping into the head coaching role is Mitch Johnson, officially named the 19th head coach in franchise history after serving as acting head coach for the majority of last season.

On the court the Silver and Black are led by NBA All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. They are joined by Spurs veterans Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan while Stephon Castle, the NBA’s 2025 Rookie of the Year, returns for his second season. This summer the Spurs added veteran leadership with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. The 2025 NBA Draft brought more young talent to San Antonio, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and No. 14 pick Carter Bryant.

  • Terrible venue

by Dlathe on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

Unless you have floor bleacher seats the entire venue was terrible. Confession lines themselves were over 30 mins long. Couldn’t see anything. They gave zero away at breaks like regular games. Wouldn’t waste my time or money again

  • Must buy parking pass

by Kaarl on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Overall we had a good time. I was not happy with the basketball court configuration. Seating ended up being farther away than expected. Was still able to see well enough. Eat before you arrive, not a lot of choices and as usual very costly. Facility is nice. You must buy a parking pass/ use shuttle or you will walk far.

  • Awful;frustrating

by Sylvia on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

Concession stands horrible. Prices outrageous. Parking ridiculous. Road closures mind blowing. Basketball court setup awful.

  • Exciting

    by t. A. on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

More than expected even though they got slammed I had good seats nice venue good crowd 68,000 plus

  • Horrible logistics

by WT on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

The setup was the worst and we paid a lot of money to watch the back of chairs. Will not attend an event like this ever again.

  • Not a good venue for a basketball game

by Jay on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

The Alamodome is just too big for a basketball game. I felt like we were watching other people watch a basketball game. The court is too far away. I wouldn't attend a basketball game at the Alamodome in the future.

  • Historical!

by Irene on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Unforgettable night. We are part of the NBA history, we completed the 68,323 gate attendance! Very fun night! Thank you for the wonderful experience! My birthday son was so happy!

  • It was AMAZING!!

    by Lee's on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I will be honest, I thought It was going to be a nightmare between park and ride and just the logistics of it all with 68,000 people, but by taking the advice and going early, and we did leave early it went way more smoothly than I thought!! The event was amazing!! Great job to all who put it together. Great memories remembered and new ones to have. Love the Spurs! Great job to the Via bus drivers and all the volunteers who helped out. Thank you for a great memory!

  • Acoustics

by Ultraman on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

As far as the game it was awesome even though my team lost. It's the sound inside the done . It's terrible they need to improve sound quality.

  • Back at the Dome

by EugeneJ on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

OVERALL the event was AWESOME! Can NOT give a 5 star review do to a 'disconnect' with the Gate Entrances. Staff at Gate 10 stated that guests would NOT be allowed entrance through that door and had to go to another gate. So, those that waited in line for 30 min had to leave and line up somewhere else ONLY to have Gate 10 be opened a few minutes AFTER the other gates were opened.

  • Awesome game

    by M. V. on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The preparation on the Alamodome was amazing. Friendly Staff from Vendors and ushers and even announcer. Thanks for giving my family an amazing experience.

  • I Love being downtown for the game

by 2023 Valero Open on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Honestly the seating and the food and beverage was not as good as the ATT center but LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! I hated that they moved the Spurs to the east side where there is not attraction. So to be downtown, we got there early parked ate on the riverwalk, and after enjoyed the fireworks and walked to a cafe after and ate a snack. That’s what downtown gives you, at the ATT center you have to get in your car and leave. If you bring them back to downtown I’ll be there for sure!

  • It was alright

by Fan on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

Lines were too long for food and drinks. Not enough of anything. Also, the vendors need to be more around. Hard to find soda or drinks once in the seats. Beer was hot and not cold

  • GNO @ Spurs game

by Syl on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Girlfriends and I decided to have a GNO at the Alamodome game, and we had a blast!!!

  • Experience

by Mercedes on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

It was a good experience, very organized easy and fast access to venue. T shirt pick up was great every size available and easy pickup

  • Spurs

by Cesa on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

It was nice. The traffic wasn't too bad. Seeing all the old players there to support our team was so cool! It would have been good to see Tim Duncan there as well. They should have all been brought out to the center of the court like David.

  • AlamoDome memories

by Big Wurm on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Had a blast in the Dome. I got to experience game 1 of the Finals in 1999. I wouldn’t have missed this event

  • Map discrepancy

by SAB on 1/16/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

It was not what I expected. There was such a huge gap between the lower levels which looked like they were labeled RS3,etc and the next available section (which we had sec 115, row 6). If the map would have shown this prior to purchasing then I would not have been let down. Could not see as good as we thought we were going to.
