Sacramento Kings History

The Sacramento Kings' lineage traces to Rochester, New York, where they played under four names, including the Royals, for 12 years (1945–57). Led by Hall of Famers Bob Davies, Bobby Wanzer and Arnie Risen, the team defeated the New York Knicks to win the NBA championship in 1951, the highlight of a seven-year run in the playoffs.

The Royals moved to Cincinnati for the 1957–58 season and added local college standout Oscar Robertson in 1960. Led by the "Big O," they advanced to the division finals in the 1962–63 and 1963–64 seasons, with the second year featuring contributions from Rookie of the Year Jerry Lucas.

After a five-year run of futility in the late 1960s and early '70s, the team relocated to Kansas City, adopting the name the Kings, as the city's MLB team was already named the Royals. For three years, the franchise divided its home games between Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska, and were known as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. Led by Coach of the Year Phil Johnson, they made the playoffs in 1974–75. In the 10 seasons that followed as the Kansas City Kings, the team made the playoffs four times, most memorably in 1980–81 behind guard Otis Birdsong.

The franchise relocated to Sacramento in 1985, but failed to post a winning record until the lockout-shortened 1998–99 season, when a team led by Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Vernon Maxwell, Scot Pollard, and Jon Barry went 27-23. It was the first of eight consecutive seasons in the playoffs, highlighted by a trip to the 2002 Conference Finals.

In 2023, under new coach Mike Brown and All-Stars Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox, the Kings advanced to the playoffs, ultimately losing in the first round to reigning NBA champions the Golden State Warriors in a close seven-game series.

    Didn't disappoint

by MohaganyMe on 10/13/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

The best thing about the game was the buffet dinner my son and I had at the sky view restaurant! That and the fact that my good friend gave me her tickets that were on the floor, as they were leaving at half-time. The Kings are a team that you wanna root for, but they never disappoint! They get your hopes up at the end.....and then lose....as usual. Oh well, it was a free game and I enjoyed the time spent with my son. Thanks Maloofs!

    Boring

by happyperson on 10/12/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

The game was boring and halftime entertainment was boring. We were sitting up in the upper level and it was stuffy and warm. The Royal Court Dancers needs alot more work and more moves. Stop trying to be sexy because it's awful.

    STILL WORTH IT

by MissJj on 10/12/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

How can I really complain since the tickets were free. Well I could never get a ticket side by side. The e-mail said we could get two tickets, but why would we want to sit seperately? Than when we get inside there trying to sell us tickets probably to another game that's not so popular. Who is the coach I've never seen him before? Oh well thanks for the opportunity to see the kings. The tickets are so high normally I can't afford to go.

    Kings look promising this year!

by SacKingFan on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

The Kings look like they have some good energy on their team this year. "K-Mart" brings his sharp shooting to the court again this year. The "Cisco Kid" brings his much-needed intensity again this year. And the addition of Desmond Mason adds some much needed excitement to this team that I think, quite frankly, has been long missing since the Chris Webber, Peja, John Barry, Vlade Divac, Mike Bibby, Doug Christie, etc era. Tyreke Evans and Omri Caspi look to be primising rookies. This could truly be a championship team a few years down the road...They just need to pump up the intensity and bring it each and every night. Never mind Kobe, Lebron, and Allen Iverson...Teamwork is the name of the game, and it's how championships are won. Lets see that good ol' Kings and Arco Arena energy come back this year!

    KINGS

by Cuatro on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

For opening night it was a pretty good size crowd. The promotion department did I good job recognizing state emplyees. Great help in the isles's to get to your seats. My only grief was the food was a little on the cold side. Other than that it was a great time.

    Thank you Kings

by lesp on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

First of all, I would like to thank the Kings for their support to State workers. That was very kind gesture and I'm sure all State workers would agree that there are organizations out there who help and support us. Thanks again!

Fun, fun -- but the Kings are gonna lose a lot!

by JRodandLeoBron on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

We had a lot of fun at the Kings-Trailblazers game. I can see why Arco Arena needs to be replaced. Our seats were behind the basket. They are worn out from tons of use. I wondered if they were actually the seats used during regular season games. I would be appalled if they are used for the whole season. The Kings are still a work in progress. They are a very short team. They need a lot more size. I hope they can grab a back-up center before the season starts. Maybe someone will be made available after all of the cuts have been made. Sean May is awfully slow. I am not sure why Petrie signed him. Brockman was great. He's a bruiser who plays like a football player. Tyreke is going to be a star -- he'll be one of the better players in the league once he develops an outside shot. It's going to be a long season with lots of losses, unfortunately. Still, we had fun -- and it was great to see NBA talent up close. The Trail Blazers -- Brandon Roy and Greg Oden -- are a terrific team.

    The event was fun!

by GoLakers on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

The game was fun to watch. I enjoyed the mascot during down times. The beer was sold at a reasonable price for the large cup.

    Sacramento Kings are great!!!

by CheyenneSummer on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

My husband (especially my husband) and I watch the Kings on TV, but to see them play in person was absolutely fantastic. I was sorry that they didn't win over the Portland Trail Blazers, however, as I have said, it was really great being able to see the Sacramento Kings play at Arco Arena and a wonderful experience for both my husband and me. Thanks so much for this opportunity.

    The Game was Great!

    by BrownEyes1 on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

I thought the Game was very entertaining for a Pre-Season game. The seats were awesome, food a little too expensive, but an overall fun evening. I would definitely recommend this event to a friend.

    Attempts to Play

by cherrystrivia on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

I did not enjoy the game and left at the half. Our Kings is a losing team and I just don't understand why we pay them millions for WHAT? Their plays are filled with limited shots, fouls and lack of scoring. Perhaps we need to cut their pay maybe they would play harder to WIN!!!

    Free State Worker Kings Game!!!

by Dnutprincess on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

The best part about the evening was the free CLOSE seats! The game itself was a little boring. Still spent $30 on food and drinks! UGH!
