Sacramento Kings History

The Sacramento Kings' lineage traces to Rochester, New York, where they played under four names, including the Royals, for 12 years (1945–57). Led by Hall of Famers Bob Davies, Bobby Wanzer and Arnie Risen, the team defeated the New York Knicks to win the NBA championship in 1951, the highlight of a seven-year run in the playoffs.

The Royals moved to Cincinnati for the 1957–58 season and added local college standout Oscar Robertson in 1960. Led by the "Big O," they advanced to the division finals in the 1962–63 and 1963–64 seasons, with the second year featuring contributions from Rookie of the Year Jerry Lucas.

After a five-year run of futility in the late 1960s and early '70s, the team relocated to Kansas City, adopting the name the Kings, as the city's MLB team was already named the Royals. For three years, the franchise divided its home games between Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska, and were known as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. Led by Coach of the Year Phil Johnson, they made the playoffs in 1974–75. In the 10 seasons that followed as the Kansas City Kings, the team made the playoffs four times, most memorably in 1980–81 behind guard Otis Birdsong.

The franchise relocated to Sacramento in 1985, but failed to post a winning record until the lockout-shortened 1998–99 season, when a team led by Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Vernon Maxwell, Scot Pollard, and Jon Barry went 27-23. It was the first of eight consecutive seasons in the playoffs, highlighted by a trip to the 2002 Conference Finals.

In 2023, under new coach Mike Brown and All-Stars Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox, the Kings advanced to the playoffs, ultimately losing in the first round to reigning NBA champions the Golden State Warriors in a close seven-game series.

    the Sac Queens

    by bmw1150ducati996 on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

WOW, What a waste of 2 hours! The Queens, I mean Kings look terrible! I guess they will get the 1st round draft pick again this year also. The attendance was horrible. Everyone there could have fit in the lower level with seats left over. The blow up Sampson was the most entertaining thing there (besides a lot of Sacramento's fine looking ladies)! The noise meter on the score board never went above 1/4 of the way up. There were times during the game where it was almost totally quiet. WOW, if that is how the rest of the season is going to be this will for sure be a write off year again for the Maloofs. 1/2 the boxes were empty. There were more people sitting in the upper level than there was in the lower level. Luckily I parked in the "free" lot and had free tickets. So, the whole evening cost me gas and 3 hours of time. If your going to watch the queens run up and down the court save your money, if you're going for the people watching, hmmm ok... maybe. I think our high school basketball teams in the area do a better job than these over paid babies!

I like what I see in this team with a lot of talent and the energy that the young players bring to the team, Evans, Caspi and Brockman they will help the team to win a lot more games than last year.

    Kings Home Game Was Great!!!

by GodsDaughter on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

We were very excited to be attending the first home game for the KINGS. The game was back and forth and there was a few times we were behind by 10, but the adrenaline in the area was fantastic. We had court side seats which made the game that much more enjoyable. I look forward to attending another game. The yelling, meeting new fans and cheering on the KINGS. The only negative is that the Kings need to work more on rebounding and turnovers, they get that perfected and the will definitely be a team to watch out for!!! Final words, "GO KINGS". I know you can pull if off this year, I have faith in you! I LOVE MY KINGS. I would love to be blessed with 4 court side tickets so my daughter, two sons and I could see a home game court side again.

    good game

by naysen on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

That was a good game yesterday. it was really exciting the only bad thing was that the kings should have played more defense and got back on D after ever shot. They can be a great team in the near future. they just need to learn how to trust each other to get the job done. I see a bright future in them but before that they should work on their chemistry.

    Kings vs Trail Blazers

by TrinaBear on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

It was nice to be there, but hoped it would have been packed. The game started off fun, but later got frustrating watch the poor plays made. Figure they'll get better since this was their first game. Love watching Kevin Martin, but it takes a team to win the game and can't depend on him to win it alone.

    Boring..

    by Hauchaufeze1 on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

The kings dont seem to have the offensive drive. They always wait for the other team to put presure. We need younger and more energetic players. Kay is too heavy .....

    Rookie preview

by Mige on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

I like the rookies, they have energy and talent. The crowed is still loud but we need more fans to energize the team. K-Mart is still the "Guy"

    Much better than expected!

by Kingsgal on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

Thanks to Maloof Entertainment and the Kings, this state worker was able to go to the game. Foul calls were questionable-here we go again with the referees. The rookies looked really good and Kevin Martin fabulous. Enjoyed the game at the end but it was painful to watch the Blazers get inside and under the basket so easily. Hopefully we will get some defense and not depend so much on 3-pointers, although they are fun to watch. I plan on attending a lot of games this year..

    K-Mart's 3, we needed it!

by MamaMel on 10/8/09ARCO Arena - Sacramento

Although the Kings lost, it was a close game going back and forth. When they tied up I thought they could pull away and be in front. Hopefully, with time and experience they will come together as a team and start winning games.
