Beautiful, poignant, & dark
by wilwhimsey on 1/20/14Macgowan Hall Little Theater - Los AngelesThis was spectacular on a lot of levels. The first and most obvious of course would be that the puppets are beautiful- as is the set and the lighting. Quite inspiring and remarkable. But even more impressive than the visuals, is the performance. One man voicing and operating all the characters for an hour and forty minutes of sometimes rapid fire repartee and completely in the moment with his storytelling. The amount of focus he brings to the performance sweeps the audience into his world. The script is absurdest- sort of dark tragic-comedy. I found the end of the story rather dark for my tastes- but it was what he had to say so I respect that. Though dark it is a viable outcome within the world he set up. I personally think humans are like cockroaches and rats and that they will survive and adapt in some manner even if numbers are decreased for a bit. But, he was making a point with his story. When all was said and done the evening was more about ideas than about puppets. Which is what good theater is about.
