Country Byrds with Stuart chiming in

by DWTSfan001 on 10/6/18Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

A pleasure to hear these Byrds originals backed up by a very competent band. Those who love Sweetheart of the Rodeo must see this show to hear the stories behind the songs. Marty Stuart adds some fine playing and vocals. There are enough of the Byrds hits to satisfy those who aren’t wild about their unique country album. A Tom Petty tribute will surprise you when you see their takes on some of Petty’s best songs. An evening that will inspire some of us long-time garage band members to pull out the Rickenbacker 360/12, especially after the Pete Seeger closer that is McGuinn’s finest moment.

    A Very Moving Evening

by Rob128 on 10/6/18Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

I went expecting a very good show. But what I experienced was a true revelation. The opening song was “My Back Pages”. I’ve always loved both Dylan’s song, and The Byrds’ version of it. Well, I wasn’t prepared for how much it would affect me to hear Roger and Chris doing it with a band. And not just any band - Marty Stuart is a phenomenal singer and player, with a band of hot musicians who deserve their name, the Fabulous Superlatives. If you are a fan of the great Clarence White, this is as close as you can get to the experience. Marty, who famously plays Clarence’s original pull-string Telecaster, has mastered Clarence’s touch, feel, inventiveness, and dexterity on the instrument, such that it is virtually impossible to tell that you are not listening to Clarence up on stage. Marty’s singing, too, was outstanding! I wish he could have sung lead on one or two of Gram’s tunes, such as “Hickory Wind” or “One Hundred Years From Now”, although having Chris sing them reinforces his connections with Gram during the Flying Burrito Brothers. If you loved The Byrd’s, or Clarence, or Gram Parsons, you will love this show. I will say that it was the most affecting and moving concert I have ever attended.

    Rock Hero Disappoints

by Nutsaboutrock on 10/6/18Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

I was so disappointed with this concert. As a lifetime Byrds fan, the country western theme made me sit and nod my head. I wanted more Byrds music and less of Rogers backup bands uninspiring country jangle. It is becoming hard to find a 60's rock star still performing live. All I wanted was to hear the songs that The Byrds made so famous and he only played a few.

    Roger and Chris Nail It

by Chrisamps on 9/28/18Town Hall - New York

If you liked the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album this is a dream come true. Chris and Roger are in fine voice. Between songs, they explained the evolution of the album. They mixed in Byrds songs that had hinted of their turn to country. On the Byrds songs, Chris played the bass and everyone knows what Roger played. It was nice to see Roger with a band again. Many thanks for Marty Stuart and his band for backing up Roger and Chris.

A wonderful time at The Town Hall

by WALLETs on 9/28/18Town Hall - New York

I had a wonderful time at The Town Hall listening to a lot of good music performed by legends such as Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and Marty Stuart. Songs as My Back Pages, Mr. Tambourine Man and Turn! Turn! Turn! are just too good. They give me goosebumps. Walking away from Town Hall to my hotel with a happy smile on my face singing: To everything Turn Turn Turn There is a season Turn Turn Turn ......................

    Good but could be better...

by Anonymous on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

The concert and venue very overall very enjoyable. Unfortunately Roger McGuinn's mic was not mixed well at all. I don't believe his voice is going and I could not hear a clear word out of his mouth (when he was speaking and singing), everyone else sounded great.

    Still Magic!

by Cobra289 on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

McGuinn with Chris Hillman, Marty Stewart and Matry's band together for the Byrds 50th anniversary of the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. Great concert! The musicianship was stellar and the players really seemed to be enjoying playing together something you do not always get. It was also nice to see that McGuinn, who generally plays solo these days, can share the stage and let others shine, particularly Marty Stewart playing Clarence White's old 'b bender' guitar and Chris Hillman taking the lead vocals on the old Gram Parsons songs.

    Sweetheart of the Rodeo

by BobbytheBrains on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

Outstanding show. Had never heard of Marty Stuart but he and his band provided an excellent backup to messrs McQuinn & Hillman when they were not rocking on their own. In hindsight I may have been giving Graham Parsons too much credit and Chris Hillman not enough for the country feel of the LP.

McGuinn, Hillman, & Stuart - A Perfect Combination

by ChampionTire on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

I would see this show again. It probably will be the last time you will see Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman together. I have seen McGuinn a number of times (the best show being one at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia), but this show is different. With Hillman and Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives (they truly live up to the “fabulous” in their name), McGuinn wisely cedes much of the performance to the other musicians on stage. Still, it was great to see him perform a number of songs not in his usual concert repertoire, such as “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.” While this is a show featuring a lot of guitar-driven music, I found the best moments to be when Hillman took the lead vocal duties. Among the songs on which he is the lead are “Hickory Wind,” and “Wildflowers.” Hillman looked like he was having fun. You could see how much he enjoyed the camaraderie of the other musicians. His voice is still strong and he gave touching renditions of the songs I mentioned above. Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives are a very tight band. Stuart owns Clarence White’s string bender guitar (both White and Gene Parsons, as you know were latter-day Byrds; Parsons developed the guitar which pulls the strings with the guitar strap to make it sound like a slide guitar). Before the performance, there was a steady stream of people going up to the stage to take a picture of the instrument. Stuart uses White’s guitar a lot — it isn’t there just for show. He does a particularly good job with it on “Wasn’t Born to Follow.” Stuart also is expert on the mandolin. The Superlatives are Kenny Vaughan, Chris Scruggs, and Harry Stinson. Each is impressive on their own. Scruggs handled the steel pedal guitar duties for several of the Sweetheart of the Rodeo songs. Stuart and his band do much more than support McGuinn and Hillman. In addition to performing two of their own songs, they also take the lead on songs such as “Satisfied Mind” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” Lastly, I should mention that The Town Hall is a terrific, intimate venue. The staff was courteous and the sound was terrific. It would be a shame not to produce a live album from this tour.

    Sweetheart Of The Rodeo

by DanCaravan on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

I thought the show was magnificent! I'm glad I was already a casual fan of Marty Stuart and his band because their musicianship was incredible. The only comment was Roger's vocals were not as clear as the rest of the vocalists. He had a different type of microphone which may have been reason but overall it was beautiful. Mandolin, Pedal Steel and Stand Up Bass make any show better!

    A Sweetheart of a Show

by allentheg on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, founding members of the Byrds, brought their classic 50 year old album SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO to the stage of Town Hall with stellar backing from Marty Stuart and his band. The 1st set was a wonderful combination of hot singles and album track that showed the country influence in the Byrds’s sound prior to heading to Nashville to record SOTR. The 2nd part of the show was devoted to the album as well as a tribute to Tom Petty. While this was a McGuinn/Hillman show, I can’t find enough superlatives to use to describe Stuart’s singing and playing. In support of these 3 shining light’s, Marty’s band provided instrumental and vocal support that was among the best I’ve seen in years. A sweet show that far surpassed my expectations and that I will remember for decades to come.

    Byrds Reflyte

by ConnellFrench on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

This wasn't officially billed as a Byrds reunion, but that's pretty much what it was. 2/3 (McGuinn & Hillman) of the surviving members performing an album that Crosby wasn't on anyway. By not calling it a reunion, it gave them a chance to concentrate more on the music. They did all of Sweetheart of the Rodeo, plus other country-ish songs the Byrds had done over the years (and a handful of their hits). Marty Stuart's band provided great backing and McGuinn & Hillman looked like they were enjoying themselves. A great show.

    Boring

by Deanne1031 on 9/27/18Town Hall - New York

Left at the intermission, this guy is living on his past, hasn't done anything significant in 50 years. On the other hand Marty Stuart and The Fabulous Superlatives are incredible, energetic, talented & have writtten some top notch songs. I dont know why Marty and the guys did this tour! Sweethearts of the Rodeo is NOT country music!
