There were a lot of changes from the original that I remember from my childhood and from Whitney Houston's production, illustrating growth in both Cinderella's and the prince's characters from not knowing who they are to becoming more self-aware and self-assured. However, I was very disappointed that the song "The Prince is Giving a Ball" wasn't a stronger production. There are the obvious big numbers where the prince and Cinderella fall in love and get married, but that song has always been one of the strong points of any performance, and this time it was given short shrift. Additionally, playing up that number could have given Lord Pinkleton a bigger chance to show off that fabulous voice. The actors playing Cinderella and the prince had good voices, too, but their acting was overdone, even for a comic fairy-tale type musical.
