The Robert Cray Band in Concert
When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.
Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.
The Robert Cray Band Background
Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.
Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

The show was great. My husband and I have been listening to his music since we started dating 25 years ago. It was great to see him live.
As always, great show. Wish the crowd would stop requesting songs and just listen to the great music
My husband and I are big blues/jazz fan's and we've come to enjoy Napa's Uptown Theater and its local fine restaurants. My husband expressed an interest in wanting to see Robert Cray and we ended up with great seats in the front lower center section. Robert Cray put on a good show but we wouldn't pay twice to see him again. His opening act promptly began at 8pm and Robert Cray began at about 9pm. Being a Friday night show and having been up since 5am, half of the songs he played were like sleepy-time, nighty-night songs - it was like being fed sleeping pills rather then getting pumped and energized. I felt the show was fair-to-average; nothing worth praising or raving about. Throughout the show, Robert Cray never broke out in a sweat which says alot about a performers energy level.
Robert Cray was fantastic! The sound was crisp and cler and his voice is still as good as ever. I just wish he'd played a little longer! The venue is beautiful as well. Excellent seats.
Robert Cray was amazing, flawless..... Pure purfection!!!!!!! The theatre was beautiful and spacious, with a friendly, helpful staff!!!!!
Such a great venue ... Robert & The Boys were rock'n ... Great as always!! I liked Patrick Sweaney as well ... Got to chat with hime during the change.... I will be coming back often!!
Once again Y Bob never fails to satisfy? Great show! one of the few great entertainers around!!
We loved the show. Robert Cray's performance along with the rest of the band gets 5 stars!! The song selection of excellent. We had fantastic seats and the sound in the venue was awesome. My husband was obsessed the next day as he searched all over the internet for any fillmed performances and recording of Robert Cray he could watch. We will make sure to see him the next time he is in town.
The Robert Cray band put on a great show! He really kept it moving and had a great interaction with the audience. Got people up and dancing. Also, the Uptown Theatre in Napa is a great venue....not a bad seat in the house......great sound....and you can bring your drinks to your seat.. Easy parking on the street close by and many restaurants to choose from within walking distance.
Robert Cray is Awesome... You can't beat the guitar playing and I love his unique voice... He has some of the greatest lyrics I have ever heard... I have seen him many many times and he never disappoints... The opening act Patrick Sweaney was Great... I hope he goes far in the music world, he was very genuine and had some killer songs...
Undeniably among the greatest blues musicians/singers that has ever lived. His voice alone was worth twice the price, not to mention his guitar mastery. I was just a bit disappointed that his setlist included so many of his more sedate and obscure pieces, though they were all excellent. His stage presence left a bit to be desired and he seemed disconnected from the crowd. Of course, he's in his late fifties, so I can understand. Nonetheless, a performer worth seeing anytime and anyplace!
I love him. Iloved the show. Bring him back. He was adorable with the public. And the public with him. Everybody wanted more songs. The show was well organized. His performance was incredible.I love this guy and iwill see him again this year.
Robert Cray at his best as usual...I had seen him before with Eric Clapton as well as at Crossroads 2010..great finger-work on the guitars and that characteristic Fender sound (alternated between a couple of Strats) He has to be one of the best blues player around today..He played for a little over an hour and they wound up at 9:30 pm - wish it was a little longer.
Heard of RCB for a while but not had the opportunity to see them live. What a a treat. RGB shines in their recordings but listening to the band live is so worth it and much more. There is a great energy between the band and the audience, Robert's vocal styling and guitar playing really conveys the blues in a down to earth nature. Love watching Robert play the guitar. When he is not singing as he plays the guitar, love to see his facial expression as he goes through the motions. And as sad as some of the lyrics might be, still the energy while playing brings out joy to the crowd. RCB needs to stop by Boston more often. Wilbur Theater was a great venue for this show.
The show was ok the set list was way to short. A little under 1.5 hours we expected a little more than we got.
Robert Cray Band show was awesome. RC is the king of smooth, and his voice is even more incredible than his guitar playing. I was disappointed however that the show only lasted barely an hour and a half; he has so much great material. Highly recommended nonetheless. Musicianship at its finest.
Excellent show but short (under 1 1/2 hours including the one encore). Sound was top notch, very professional.
Outstanding concert. First time seeing Robert Cray, brought my daughter. He is even better in person than his CD's. Gave it all, great show. My 22 year old daughter is now a Robert Cray fan. I only wish he played my Robert Cray favorite "Forecast Calls for Pain". Other than that oversight, I couldn't ask for more. Incredible keyboard player. Great to see this guy can still get it done at his age. You can see the band really enjoys each other
The venue was perfect for Robert Cray. The sound was excellent.
My only complaint about the show is that we missed half of it. I'm not sure why, but I assumed there would be a warm-up band. Wrong! We got to the show late and RC was already half-way into his one and only set. I guess none of us is getting any younger!! The music didn't disappoint though. Smooth as silk vocals, blues guitar at its best. The rest of the band just as impressive as RC. We'll definitely make it to the show the next time he's in Boston - and next time we'll arrive on time!!
