The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

Robert Cray was "hot on" at the Wilbur. His new music has the feel of vintage and I have never seen him so connected with the audience as he was at this concert. I loved it as did my friends. His band obviously enjoy their music and gave an excellent performance. The Wilbur has an intimate clubby feel. All in all a fabulous evening.

  • Robert Cray, Amazing Show

    by linda450 on 6/23/11Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

What a great evening. The show was perfect. Just wish the people in the crowd would stop yelling out and let the man play his music ! other than that, he and his band were top notch that night. Wilbur theatre needs to figure out seating so we are not all crammed in like sardines !

The concert was pretty average. I don't understand why his mike was set so low so he had to bend over just to get close to it. From our seats, the vocals were just plain horrible, basically sounding like they were coming from down a long hallway. In his bit of between song banter, he wasn't near the mike so you couldn't hear him. He did have fun making fun of "Arnold"... as many of his songs deal with martial infidelity. For the money, I should have just stayed home.

  • Great Talent always rises to the top

by Dannyboyjake on 5/23/11Pantages Theater - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

It was a very good show. Just Robert and 3 of his band memebrs on a stage at a great venue in Minneapolis! He sounded great and played even better. I wish he would have player "I Shiver" -someone in the audience even yelled for this song early on. Recommend to all.

  • music good, performance boring

by zellerdude on 5/21/11Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

I loved the music. Excellent guitar and vocals. Cray basically stood in one position the entire show and said "Thank you very, very much" at least 20 times. Not a dynamic performance at all.

  • Enojoyable but short

by pageo on 5/21/11Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the Robert Cray Band played really well. I was a little upset that we rushed to get there on time, especially after being notified that there was no opening act and that the band would go on at 7:30. They started late and I thought the concert should have gone on a little longer. There is no getting around the fact the Robert Cray is a great guitar player though, but I could have used a little more.

  • The Robert Cray Band is Amazing!

by kathyka on 5/21/11Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

The only thing that wasn't perfect was they started 1/2 hr late. (not sure why, so I still gave the show 5 stars) The music was awesome, the theatre is awesome. the 90 or so minute show flew by in a blink; I could listen to them all night.

  • Robert Cray Band had that "WOW" feeling!

    by 1Hambone on 4/12/11Parker Playhouse - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

The Robert Cray Band is the best contemporary blues band touring right now. Seeing them at the Parker Playhouse in Ft Lauderdale Fl was even more of a treat as the venue has approximately 1100 seats and gave the show a more up close and intimate feeling. Robert gave us quiet the show with his very personal banter between band members and his superior guitars work. Keyboards and his excellent rythem section are the absolute best and are the standard all contemporaty bands should be measured by. Once again i took my kids (in their 20's) along so they could experience the "Best" artists of our time. By the third song of the evening the look on their faces were what I always enjoy seeing taking them to these shows. What I call the "Wow" effect. We all look foreward to more shows at the Parker Playhouse as its a great music venue.

Excellent concert! The Robert Cray Band was fantastic - great blues experience and Shamekia Copeland was outstanding. If anyone has the opportunity to experience these two in concert don't pass it up. It's Blues at its best.
