The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Fantastic Venue

by YoungBobFan on 2/22/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

This is my first concert experience at the Birchmere, and I am certain that it will not be my last. The place is the perfect size for an nice intimate evening with the artist and a couple of hundred like minded music enthusiasts. In addition, the food was reasonably priced for a concert venue and the service was fantastic. Robert Cray is quite an entertainer and did a phenomenal job engaging the audience and keeping things rolling in order to maximize the number of songs that could be fit into the time allowed. The show lasted approximately 1hr and 40min (not including the 1/2 hr opener) and was truly enjoyable from start to finish.

  • Play more from "Strong Persuader"

by coachhornet on 2/21/12Hard Rock - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

I know it must get old playing the same songs for 30+ years but Robert thats what we love. To only play ONE song from "Strong Persuader" was a big mistake. You played "Smokin' Gun" and it was great, but to not at least play "Right next door", left me disappointed and I won't be back. It may explain why there were so many seats empty for the show. Your playing and band were great but I left feeling unfulfilled.

  • Robert Cray was astounding

by longliverockn on 2/20/12Hard Rock Live Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Saturday night's concert was filled with virtuosic soul singing and brilliant guitar playing by one of the world's greatest bluesmen. There is a reason guitar hero's such as Eric Clapton have sung his praises for years--he never gives a bad performance and just continues to amaze with guitar solos that would be the envy of his peers. His band is one of the best and always sets a deep pocket for his Stax- flavored grooves. On this night he played a stunning version of "Smoking Gun", probably his most famous song. Other highlights included "Bad Influence" and "The Forecast (Calls For Pain)." To the uninitiated, you won't be disappointed.

  • Robert Cray is Smooth Blues with Hot Guitar!

by boonas on 2/20/12Hard Rock Live Orlando - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

He has a very low key, comfortable persona on stage. You feel as though he is sitting in your living room playing for you & friends. Great band accompaniments. His playing style is top notch and feels naturally smooth.

Excellent concert. Robert Cray and his band is always a great show. It seems like he has loosened up over the years. He seems to have more audience interaction now.

  • Robert Cray....absolutely fantastic!

by OasisGuitar on 2/20/12Hard Rock Live Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This was probably the single best concert I've been to in a long while and I've been to many. Roberts voice and playing were nothing short of perfect. He is clearly in his prime. The band was top notch and the interaction between all of the performers was a joy to watch. It was clear that they were having as great a time as we were. GO SEE THIS GUY! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

  • Robert Cray and Willie Green were great

This show was one of the best shows I've seen. the seating was good and not an extremely large crowd which made the show much more enjoyable.

  • Robert Cray Band was excellent!!

by DiginTheBlues on 2/16/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Although only 4 musicians in the band (we missed the horns used on most of his studio albums) the Robert Cray Band rocked. Great music, a wonderful venue, cold beer, what else could you ask for?

  • HE IS A STRONG PERSUADER

by TANGLEDUPINRED on 2/16/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 4 out of 5

I loved seeing Robert Cray again! I really missed the Memphis Horns however. There are certain songs that really don't do well in concert without the horns I guess and that is why they weren't included. The concert hall has good acoustics but if you are short like me and you are not in an aisle seat, you can't see very well. His new album is fantastic. It was a very Happy Valentine's Day!

  • Wow!

by ChapelHeel66 on 2/16/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to hundreds of shows -- everything from jazz (e.g., Wynton Marsalis, Norah Jones), to 80s pop (e.g., Duran Duran) to metal (e.g., Iron Maiden, Metallica) to indie (too numerous to name), and this was probably the single best performance on stage that I have ever seen. Previously I would have probably said Radiohead's last tour was the best. His voice was spot-on, and the guitar solos were incredible. Not just technically incredible, but they had amazing feeling to them. This particular venue is small (seats around 400 I think), so maybe the size and acoustics helped, but this blew me away. I had a 45 minute drive home and refused to listen to the radio because I didn't want this show out of my head.

  • robert cray was dissappointing!

by dceleven on 2/16/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 2 out of 5

although I enjoyed the venue, the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, his performance was lacking. He seemed to have played alot of unknown music, either really old, or really new, but not his hugely successful stuff! I am a big fan, but was pretty bummed! The band was tight and sounded good, just wanted to hear the popular stuff that made him successful.

  • Cray & Band played best show I've seen in years!

by Guarrior on 2/16/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

The venue (Ponte Vedra Concert Hall) was cozy and intimate, and the near-capacity audience was aptly appreciative. Young Bob and the band performed flawlessly, and the sound mix and quality was superb. It's a shame that an hour and a half plus (with encore) barely scratched the surface of all the possible songs from his discography he could have favored us with. Obviously the band is mainly Robert Cray, but the cherry on top for me was keyboardist Jim Pugh, a consummate pro without whom the band just wouldn't be the same.

  • Robert Cray was fantastic and I'd see him again!

by susanknight on 2/16/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This was such a great show and I'd see him again. A perfect evening and the venu Ponte Vedra Music Hall was the best!

  • Robert Cray Band was fantastic!

by beccawvs on 12/12/11Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 4 out of 5

Effortless! He makes it look so easy. We very much enjoyed the show on Thursday, December 8. Robert Cray and the Band were spot on, a definite must see! His casual attitude just added to the mellow rhythyms of the music... I would definitely go see them again! Had never been to this venue before, but would definitely return to see another show, great acoustics and comfortable and intimate atmosphere!

  • Great music, but not enough of it...

by mamdam on 12/10/11Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 4 out of 5

This was a very good show, but it was way too short. The band played for just about an hour and a half, including the encore. Just when the audience felt that there was a "groove" going on, the band said their good-byes. It was a real let down in my opinion. But the music was great...albeit it too brief.

  • Cray is an exceptional artist !

by twozie on 12/10/11Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great , the location of the show was disappointing.Hard to find, service horrible.

  • Robert Cray-Better and Better!

    by Seeker317 on 12/10/11Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 4 out of 5

Third time to see him. Definately the best especially in an intimate venue like Showcase. The y seemed like they were really having fun up there and I know the audience had a ball. Should have given 5 stars but was only hour and a half show. Cant wait for next time.

  • Masterful!
