The Robert Cray Band in Concert
When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.
Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.
The Robert Cray Band Background
Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.
Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

I left after the first two groups......I heard no blues...It was closer to hard rock...awful
I experienced everything from moments of leadbelly to glimpses of jimmy hendrix during this show. Tyler Bryant played a Texas Blues solo that would make Stevie cry during his song "Say a Prayer". Also, his song "Shackles" was awesome live. Ian Moore played incredibly and with amazing humility. Robert Randolph plays well beyond his years. Despite some early sound issues, he never lost his smile and that energy is contagious. Jimmie Vaughan brought it back to Texas with his rockabilly laced blues. He almost made me cry as he played "Six Strings Down" and Texas Flood". Finally, Robert Cray tore it up. He has a certain something that makes magic before he ever tells his first bluesy story. When his stratocaster starts singing, though, its-well-sublime.
Let me just say it was a very pleasant outing for my family. The parking is very close and so easy to get in and out. There are numerous shops and places to eat immediately outside the event center. Note to self, we should have thought about that instead of purchasing high priced food and drink items inside the event center. The event center is well marked inside as to the areas, and plenty of restrooms (surprisingly very clean). The newness of the facility didn't go unnoticed. The acoustics were good, all of the bands were excellent, and the seating on the floor "X" area were for the most part exceptional. The only complaints were inconsiderate fellow attendees who either thought everyone wanted to look around them as they gabbed more to their neighbors than in viewing the performance and blocked the view of those behind them, and those who thought everyone wanted to watch them bump and grind to each and every song. Perhaps the center should consider putting in a dance floor and asking each of them to head over to that area. Interesting turned to shameful as the night progressed and several of them were clearly drunk. Lastly the center should have made a program available online or at the location instead of the information lady manually writing out the band names and times to hand out to people. It would have also been a great opportunity for the center to make money selling commenorative posters so the kids could get them signed by the bands, and T-Shirts naming the event and bands. There certainly were a lot of items for sale, but none of these related specifically to the event. Although it was an incredibly long time to be there to see each and every band in their entirety, it was an awesome experience that I would highly recommend checking out.
good line up. the music was great, the room was very nice, good seating, excellent viewing. the sound was very uneven. Ian Moore's set was very poorly mixed. Robert Randolh was too loud. Jimmy Vaughan and Robert Cray sounded correct. it seems weird it takes 3 bands for the sound guy to get it right....
I thought the event was a huge success. The vibe was electric & the sound was incredible. I would recommend the Ian Moore Band headlining in the future. By far the best talent in the house & the crowd knew it!
Excellent venue, great music. DFW needs more like this. Tyler Bryant was a great opener and it got better from there. Ian Moore was fantastic, as usual. Robert Randolph picked it up from there. Jimmy Vaughn was tight and crisp. And Robert Cray was Robert Cray, very good. Worth the price of admission.
Overall I enjoyed the show, but I was disappointed that I couldn't see anything on the stage. I wish the monitors were used. The sound on the center was surprisingly good.
Seen RC 4 or 5 times. This was a solid concert. His bass player was awesome. Richard Cousins. I like this band better than the previous. Horns would be great to see again though. Perfect size venue at The Tulalip. But, security wouldn't let people dance during the concert. That is a bit odd.
I was really looking forward to seeing one of my favorite guiter players. I bought my tickets months in advance. Robert Cray was amazing!!! It was just a shame that the show was ruined by a bunch of drunks. There was a group of six drunks behind me and my friend. They spilled their drinks on the lady next to me and were trying to start fights with security. Not to mention the idiot that was being chased around by security all night. I think it was disrespectful towards one of the greatest guitarest still alive. I dont understand why they werent escorted out. I would love to see Robert Cray again, but not at this casino. Security is a joke and they dont seem to care about people disrupting the event.
I saw robert cray at least 15 years ago still sounds and plays fantastic. The problem here was ridiculous overzealous security at the tulalip casino. people were trying to dance and the security kept chasing them and making them sit. I will not go to another show there again. Took away from a great show.
Robert was on! This was the first time I saw him and was not disappointed. The only downside is the security at Tulalip Casino was aggressive to say the least. Musically everything was tight. The drummer broke a snare head, but it didn't even slow the show up. They worked around it. Go see him!
Loved the concert! Robert Cray was phenomenal! His music, singing, and guitar playing did not disappoint. It was nice to be so close and "feel" the music. The chairs are set up too close together though. The lady next to me was a personal friend by the time we had rubbed hips for 2 hours!! But as for the performers, excellent!!
We see the Robert Cray Band as often as we can, and they never fail to thrill. Flawless performance, great interaction with the audience and that great music. What an entertainer!
This was my first show at the Ponte Vedra venue and I was in awe with the concert hall. I've been to well over 100 concerts, and this was by far the best sound quality I've ever heard. Cray was incredible as always, nothing flashy or phony. No political statements. Just great music by incredible musicians. My only complaint would be the same as the second and third times I've seen Cray perform, not enough songs in the set list from the Strong Persuader CD. Disappointing yes,, but not enough to keep this 30+ year fan away.
Great energy, great music, great show! Band was fabulous.
I paid for two tickets, but ended up going by myself since my Wife was sick, I got there a little late and stood for the whole performance. I feel I paid for a seat, but was unable to get one. Didn't know I paid 50.00 a ticket to stand. The birchmere is a great place for a concert, if you get there 2 hours before the performance. I think they always overbook!
I have several CDs by Robert Cray, but this was the first time I saw him and his band live. The show was GREAT. One of the best that I have ever attended at the Birchmere. I will come to see him again when he's in the area.
This was our first visit to the Birchmere and we were pleasantly surprised by the intimacy of the venue. We were seated right up front. So close I could see the strings on Bob's guitar and the sweat on his brow during the last few songs in the set. He was amazing. The band was amazing. He handles that guitar like it's a part of his body. His voice was pitch perfect. The band was humorous and very laid back, so much so that I almost felt like we were 'old friends'. Great show!
This was a great show, as is usual for Robert Cray. He is a performer as well as a fantastic musician. The new music is really good, I have CDs to catch up on.
I have seen Cray many times over the years, and the Birchmere is a great venue for watching. The opening act was, in my opinion, terrible, but I didn't come to see that. I got what I wanted, and that was Cray tearing it up!
