The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

both bands were fantastic, but it was loud ,the music was distorted. I think if the sound guy would turn it down a bit for the venue it would have been a wonderful expierience.

show was great and would love to see them both again, soon. The theatre was a great place to see a show like that.

  • Great show

by mikeyeo on 11/17/12Golden State Theatre - MontereyRating: 4 out of 5

Robert Cray was good as usual and KWS rocked the house. Loved when he played "While We Cry" . He changed it up from the versions but it still had a beautiful sound. Ended with Voodoo Chile of course and that did not disappoint..

  • go go go to see this show!

by LSFitz on 11/17/12Golden State Theatre - MontereyRating: 5 out of 5

What a great combination of artists and music! Robert Cray is a virtuoso and his band was just perfect. I saw him before LONG ago and he still sounds strong and amazing. Kenny Wayne Shepherd was equally good - more rocking, as expected - and the few covers he did were really pieces of art in themselves.

  • Robert Cray was wonderful

Robert Cray was wonderful! So great to see him at such a small venue in our town. Can't wait for him to return to Monterey.

  • Robert Cray Rocks

by BratSimpson on 6/20/12Tralf - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

Great show at the Tralf. Robert played a nice mix of songs that made for an entertaining evening. Would have liked to take flash photos...but I guess we have to respect the wishes of the artist.

  • Hasn't changed a bit !!!

by BlueEyedBandit on 6/20/12Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

I bought these tickets for my dad for Father's Day. He said the venue was great, perfect in fact and Robert Cray hasn't changed a bit. Sound was great and performance was just as good as the last show he got to see in 1988.

  • Allem Blues

by Rayblue on 6/19/12Allen Event Center - AllenRating: 4 out of 5

Tyler Bryant should have been the head liner! He rocked the house down and what a fabulous stage presence. Jimmie Vaughan needs to give it up but the biggest complaint was that is took so dang looooong between sets! Way too long and afternoon and evening!

Great show, Good clear sound. Mixed very well. Venue was great . Lots of leg room, no standing for people passing by. Very comfortable, and not a bad seat in the house.Even all the songs that I didn't recognize were great.

  • Allen City Blues Festival was awesome

by Bayoujohn on 6/14/12Allen Event Center - AllenRating: 5 out of 5

The blues festival was great. I did not stay to see Robert Cray because he came on too late. I was at the concert for six hours before he came on. The other bands were great. I look forward to attending the second blues festival next year. I just hope it does not run so late.

  • Allen Blues Festival A Blues Cornucopia

    by Yoda74 on 6/14/12Allen Event Center - AllenRating: 3 out of 5

This show was five different sets by different artists, ranging from blues rock to gut-bucket blues. Tyler Bryant and his band I found to be the highlight with a strong opening set of rockers and great guitar. Ian Moore, Jimmy Vaughan and Robert Cray delivered typical sets from those artists, and Robert Randolph engaged the audience well and shined on his rendition of Voodoo Child.

  • Robert Cray was AWESOME!!!

    by cooldad118 on 6/14/12Allen Event Center - AllenRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first chance we had to see Robert Cray. I have enjoyed his music for years. Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown was totally unexpected. They are so young and talented. Will have to see him again. Jimmie Vaughn was great. This was one of the best venues that I have been to and look forward to going again. Our hotel was just a few miles away. We live in Oklahoma so it wasn't far to drive.

by MisaBear on 6/13/12Allen Event Center - AllenRating: 5 out of 5

Loved every minute of it! The venue was excellent - not a bad seat in the house. The music was fabulous. We loved hearing Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown who we have been following since Tyler was 14yrs old! Robert Johnson was amazing to watch on the slide guitar... fab! Jimmie Vaughan was a real treat and Robert Cray was fantastic. I hope they make this an annual event and that the keep attracting terrific musicians.
