The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Great but could have been longer

by JimRoze on 4/14/14Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Show was as expected. I would have liked it to go longer and wish he played more off the strong Persuader album but still would go back tonight if he was playing.

SUPER SHOW!!!!...Young Bob can really play and we got old and new songs. The ban has got a cool vibe and they kept the crowd moving and wanting more.

It could have been 5 hrs long and still would have been too short. Robert Cray is not just a fantastic guitar player, he still has a great voice. Sounds like he's in his 20's. I was blown away how great that show was, a real bucket list artist.

  • Robert Cray puts on a good show

by BarbaraT on 4/12/14Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Robert Cray sounded great vocally and his guitar skills are very good. The band sounded tight, too. The warm-up band was energetic and got the crowd going. I was disappointed he didn't do Still Hot Smoking Gun and he only played for a little over an hour.

The Blind Boys of Alabama! 70 years of beautiful music! I felt honored to be there! And Robert Cray just plays and sings the blues straight from his heart. I found myself closing my eyes and just listening like I do at home!!

  • Cray needed to give more

by JayAre on 4/8/14IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 3 out of 5

I expected more than a 9 song 1 hour long performance. No encore, no spontaneity. No photography was allowed.

Had the worst sets even though I was on row 4. The blind boys weremoree exciting than robert gray. Waited years to see robert but he just didn't do a good show. Maybe he should have given the crowd what they wanted to hear and that was music wrong his old CD.

  • 54.00 for one hour, never again.

by Oilpatchho on 4/8/14IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 3 out of 5

Played well but not anywhere long enough. BB King is almost 90 and his show was a lot longer.

  • Wanted more!

Robert Cray is a great songwriter and an excellent guitar player. My only complaint is that the concert was short and he did not do an encore. I had seen him in our area once before a few years back and he seemed more "in to it" then.

  • Robert Cray band and Blind Boys of Alabama

I have seen Robert Cray perform twice before. He puts on an outstanding show. Great guitar player and fantastic vocals. My first time for the Blind Boys of Alabama. They had great energy and had the crowd rocking. The Imperial Palace in Biloxi studio a is a great place to see a show. Small room with a balcony.

Blind Boys of Alabama were superb. Gospel music that really rocked the house. Vocalists were the stars of the show. Robert Cray was disappointing. Played for an hour with no encore. Just about all selections were from his new CD. Only one or two of his well known hits. I saw him at a theater a few years ago; and his show was great. This time not so much. Maybe the IP Casino venue limited his playing time.

  • Great for only 1 hour

by fGasman3 on 4/8/14IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 2 out of 5

Only played for 1 hour but great playing. No encore.

  • Good but not exceptional

by Mark08 on 4/8/14IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 4 out of 5

Sound system was not the best. First time in this venue, not sure if this is the way it always sounds for all acts. Robert Cray was good but show seemed short.

  • Robert Cray & Blind Boys of Alabama - not enough!

by BiloxiNative56 on 4/8/14IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 3 out of 5

Let me first say that the Blind Boys of Alabama were GREAT, they just didn't play long enough. The concert started at eight and we were out of there by ten. Maybe it's a casino thing, but I'm not sure I would patronize this venue again for such a short concert. Although Robert Cray was great, his performance was also too short. No encore - lights on and out the door.

  • by Stupidrequirement on 4/8/14IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 4 out of 5

Very good show. He is a very talented cat. I'd love to see him again.

  • Too Short

by GrayCrayFan on 4/7/14Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 4 out of 5

This was my fourth time seeing Robert Cray. He and the band sounded exceptional like always but with no starting act the show seemed short. He played for 1.5 hours but should have made it 2. The crowd really wasn't expecting to leave the show at 9:30 on a Friday night. I saw Paul McCartney and he played for 3 solid hours. Cray could have played at least 2 hours. I will not go see him again.
