The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Perfect venue

Robert Cray is always great. But this small venue was the perfect place to go enjoy him. It was like having an intimate personal concert. Old church resurrected into a killer concert hall.

  • Robert Cray excellent, great guitar, blues master.

Still a master at the blues guitar. Robert Cray and his band delighted and wow'ed the crowd with his awesome style of guitar play. Personable and a bit playful, his "boy scout " attitude showed through on "Right Next Door" and love lost on "Chicken in the Kitchen". Lots of songs from his new album, "You Move Me", "Nobody's Fault but Mine", the thoughtful "What Would You Say", "Fine Yesterday" and "Hip Tight Onions" which are all instant classic Robert Cray about loving and cheating and losing the one you love. Came out for one encore and would have blown the house away if he came out for a second encore and played "Smoking Gun" but left after the first encore.

  • Go See The Robert Cray Band!

by Sacman752 on 4/2/14Sands Bethlehem Event Center - BethlehemRating: 5 out of 5

I've been Robert Cray fan for years but this was the 1st time seeing him live. His voice is powerful and his guitar playing was tight. He was excited about playing music from his latest CD (In My Soul). I listening to it right now as I type this review. Buy it and go see the band.

Robert Cray's Saturday, Mar 29 show at BB King was awesome. Loved Cray's interaction with his audience. His voice is like Ray Charles and Stevie Winwood for sure!!

  • Great show - but only 85 minutes :-(

by SameOldMan on 4/1/14B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I had not seen Robert for at least 5 years, and it was great to see him again! I was a big fan of his old band, but his current one probably better, which I did not expect! . He played several songs from his upcoming album which were all very good; as well as many from the prior album. Smaller # of old ones. Enthusiastic crowd at BB King's, with good audience interaction with young Bob.. Only negative was that it was a very short show - 85 minutes including the encore. I know the venue had a different show later that night at 11, but it felt very short. Couldn't he have played at least 15 more minutes ???

  • show to short 1hr 15 min

by billguns on 4/1/14B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

The price of tickets and my time to go to the city get their in heavy rain , be their 11/2 hours early to get a seat , the band should work as hard as I did to see them, a 1 Hr. 15 Min show is not worth going to .

  • staple and cray

by dtkfish on 3/31/14Sands Bethlehem Event Center - BethlehemRating: 5 out of 5

concert was fantastic but event venue was terrible. for the price you pay for a seat they could at least be comfortable not just fold up chairs. One of us had a back injury and could not sit on chairs, moving around so disturbed other patrons. Was a disappointment. seats for musixfest were better. Change those chairs. robert cray did not play any famous songs we all wanted to hear.

  • Double bill was lacking

by Gooddayforacoldone on 3/31/14Sands Bethlehem Event Center - BethlehemRating: 2 out of 5

Been a big fan of Robert Cray for many years but always disappointed in the length of his shows. Tonight was no exception. It was a shared bill with Mavis Staples who was decent but uninspiring. I was surprised to hear so many covers from a performer with decades of her own work. Even odder, she left the stage during her 75 minute show while the band played three instrumentals, at least one of which was also a cover. After Mavis, there was a long changeover of 30 minutes followed by Robert's short show. He is a great player, with a great voice, so it is disappointing to see such a short show.

  • wow what a show

by Crayman on 3/31/14Sands Bethlehem Event Center - BethlehemRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray will not disappoint he is a true showman and did very new and old songs. What a great set. I am anxious to hear his new album. The concert was just the right length and the songs were done to perfection.

  • Robert Cray was Outstanding!!!

by HeyHammie on 3/31/14Sands Bethlehem Event Center - BethlehemRating: 5 out of 5

The Robert Cray Band was sooooo.......good! I would see them again in a heartbeat. In fact, I hope they come back to the Sands so we can. The clarity of his voice is phenomenal. Great band and great evening!

High energy, amazing line-up Mr. Cray and his band were fantastic!!

  • Robert Cray Band at the Paramount in Huntington NY

    by RangerGirl2012 on 3/29/14The Paramount - HuntingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Robert Cray was fantastic BUT the show was supposed to start at 8pm with opening act the Blind Boys of Alabama but instead there was some other guy up there pretending to sing the blues and the Blind Boys didn't take the stage until around 9pm. Robert Cray didn't come out until 10pm which was unacceptable. Especially on a Tuesday night. I'm sure just as I did, other people came from near and far to see this show and had to work the next day. All in all, both opening acts sucked and RC was fantastic. If he performs here again I would definetly go to see him but not if he has an opening act tagging along with him.

  • Robert Cray band still smokin!

by JFarr on 3/28/14The Paramount - HuntingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Unbelievable show! Robert Cray plays such crisp, clean guitar. All of his band was spot on and smokin' hot. Blind Boys of Alabama put on quite a show, first. Very inspirational.
