The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Robert Cray Band is AWESOME!

by Anonymous on 8/11/18Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

There is a reason Robert Cray is in the Blues Hall of Fame. That is because he and his band are great. At 67 years young Robert Cray still has an amazing voice and is one of the finest blues guitar players in the world! Any time he is playing in the Bay Area I go see him. Don’t miss out on seeing a legend!!

The Robert Cray Band's performance in Napa was off the chart. Cray and the band executed with flawless perfection. It was a studio quality performance that was a real gift to the audience.

  • Disappointed, But That’s OK!

by MistakenIdentity on 7/20/18Martha's Vineyard Performing Arts Center - Oak BluffsRating: 1 out of 5

I was disappointed in both the performance and the performer. I had never heard the performer. I attended on the recommendation of friends because he was labeled as a blues/soul/ R&B singer. My disappointment is because while his lyrics may have been that of the blues or R&B, his delivery was more rock than anything. Now I know and it’s OK. With regard to the performances, the show, the sound specifically, I would rate it poor. The small setting was great but there was a very noticeable buzz coming from the speakers. In addition, the band played much too loud, again, reminiscent of rock as oppposed to the blues.

  • Robert's still got it!

by codybb on 6/27/18Penn's Peak - Jim ThorpeRating: 5 out of 5

Great musicians don't always put on great concerts. No so here! No opening act, just a solid hour and 40 minutes of jaw-dropping guitar and vocals. Very nice mix of blues, soul, and R&B. Great back-up band, but it was pretty much all Robert front and center. Sound system perfect as well. This was a great night!

  • Robert Cray was great.

    by mschind714 on 6/25/18Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray was smokin hot just great. Excellent singer, guitarist wonderful blues music. The venue is an old ballroom lots of character treated very well by the staff would highly recommend. The dinner menu is a bit limited but there is a full bar.

  • Never Disappoints!

by MinnieL on 6/25/18Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This is the 2nd time I've seen Robert Cray and it seems like he was better this time than the last. He has a sense of humor and segways from one song to the other joking with his audience. Most songs played were off his new cd but played a few of the older, more popular tunes like "Strong Persuader" and "Forecast Calls for Pain." I would highly recommend seeing him if you ever have the chance. The new venue, Sony Hall was intimate and a great setting for acts like Robert Cray. We came early for dinner and enjoyed the food immensely! Servers were attentive and made the experience that much more enjoyable. We took my mother-in-law for her birthday and she had the best time!

  • Young Bob can still jam

by BluesConnoisseur on 6/24/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

It has been a decade since I have listened to him. I saw he was coming to town and decided to go to the show, with moderate expectations. The band was tight, and young Bob can still play and sing with the best of them.

  • Robert was as Robert is.. Amazing

    by Blade58 on 6/23/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

Robert is fantastic. I would NEVER miss a Robert Cray show. He never disappoints .

by TRamsey on 6/23/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray is simply a master performer. How he keeps it fresh amazes me. He played a great mix of my old favorites and newer songs. His energy and sense of humor keeps the ball rolling. All too soon , it is but a great memory. Until next time!
