The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Robert Cray - Sony Hall

    by J&J on 9/30/19Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

First time seeing Robert Cray live and he was wonderful. He is so relaxed as is the rest of the band making for a very enjoyable performance. Sony Hall has been one of our favorite venues since moving to NYC in April and we have seen several events there - all different genres and enjoyed them all. Only complaint - For this performance they had reserved almost half of the floor seating for a company that was having their conference party. It was very distracting that they were busy talking to each other and being served dinner during the performance. Good for Sony Hall to fill the seats but really unfortunate for those of us who were trying to enjoy the show.

  • Bizarre Audience

    by J. P. on 9/30/19Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Cray was amazing. The audience consisted 80% of a corporate crowd who talked throughout and could care less about this amazing musician. What a shame for Cray. Shame on the management of the venue.

  • Great Venue

It was our first time at the Birchmere. We were pleasantly surprised, great seating, acoustics and food. We have seen Robert Cray 7 times. He always puts on a spectacular show. Seeing him in a great venue made for an exceptional night out.

I’ve been a fan of Robert Cray forever so it was everything I expected but I went with some people that weren’t familiar with him. They couldn’t have come away more ecstatic over the show. His voice and guitar playing never sounded better! Could have listened all night!!

Robert Cray was amazing! I have seen him before, the first time more than 20 years ago, and he is just as compelling today as he was then! Great musician and performer! Can't believe he was in Agoura Hills!

  • Respect for a true professional who is a treasure.

If you want to see a show that is intimate, mature and loaded with talent then go see this man and his band. What a pleasure to watch a show with such respect for a lyric and the dynamics to create the moods. His voice is exceptional, powerful yet smooth. His songs are well written and the lyrics are very relatable for regular people. His show is very polished and he is not wonky on the microphone between songs, his lyrics do the talking. His guitar playing is so real. His rhythm is tight and amazing, his solos are from the gut and his sound is spanky and soulful. Nothing better than the clean sound of a Fender Strat played through a Tube amp and the Leslie sound from the keys. Bass and Drums tight, fat and full. Layed down heavy grooves, never over-played. At times I felt like I was watching a show from the 50's, very classy and respectable. Go with a date and enjoy something you don't get to see often enough. I always feel privileged to be in the presence of greatness and absorb the feelings, thank you.

  • Robert Cray at Sugarhouse Casino in Phila.

    by LisaGirl1 on 9/11/18SugarHouse Casino - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

Concert itself was great! Would have liked to hear some older songs too, but all good. Sugarhouse Casino as a venue is ok, small, which is nice, but it was hot in there, and no stadium seating.

  • Still Doing IT....!!!
