The Robert Cray Band in Concert
When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.
Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.
The Robert Cray Band Background
Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.
Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

Truly enjoyed the concert. I do not like opening acts though. I always prefer VIP tickets so please if you can make it a little easier to apply for those. Thank you
We have seen Robert Cray more times than any other band. 4 times at this venue alone. It seems every time we go we have a great experience. The band always plays new tunes and they’res no one like them. Will be seeing them again.
Robert Cray was an amazing performer and everything I expected. The intimacy of the Northern Lights Theater made the performance feel up close and personal! My only complaint about the theater was that several noisy audience members were not dealt with. I felt that their noise and loud conversation DURING the performance was disrespectful to a performer on the level of Mr. Cray and did not reflect well on Milwaukee
The Robert Cray Band at Potowatami Northern Lights. Well, as much as I'd love to give a great, 2 thumbs up review, I just can't. Here's why- the venue, seating, service, all top notch. The band, overall, very good. If you came to watch probably one of the best blues guitarists in the genre play- you won't be disappointed. However, if you came to hear old school RCB, you won't get much of it at this show. I've been a fan for over 15 years, and even though the band played for a good hour and 45 min, they only played 3 songs I was familiar with. There were others feeling the same way as myself as evidenced by the yells of "play some old school!" from the fans. As I said, excellent guitar and vocals, lousy set list. If I knew this in advance, I would not have went.
Robert Cray and his band were great. They put everything into every song. The venue was intimate and "up close" and the sound was excellent.
The show was so good! Performing a beautiful blend of old and new songs, it was an unforgettable performance! Its so amazing that he sounds the same or better than his albums because thats not the norm for live shows. Please keep coming back to Milwaukee!!! This was second show we saw at POTO. Great venue!!
Robert Cray is always a great showman/musician. Can't wait for him to return.
I have seen Robert Cray and his Band several times since 1985. His guitar playing and singing just get better and better with time. This was no exception. An excellent performance by Cray and his Band.
Absolutely wonderful! Great blues band and singer!
A lovely venue. Robert Cray was right on that night. The only downside, he didn't play long enough and there was no encore. But whoa was his voice great. His band is so talented
Hoyt Sherman is an awesome venue for concerts. Robert Cray put on a good show, except for getting political. Stick to performing. Last time I go to any show before reviewing if the artist gets political. Will not support political artists anymore. Independent for a reason.
Great concert he was excellent along with his band
Robert Cray Band was AWESOME and Hoyt Sherman Place is a favorite concert venue.
Love this venue for a concert perfect for a performer like Robert Cray.
Robert Cray sang with heart and soul and I enjoyed every song. Did some favorites of mine "Right Next Door" and "I Shiver". Even if you've never heard of him before; just go. If you don't leave with one of his albums/cds I'd be amazed.
Robert Cray and his band have managed to maintain excellence over the decades. Do not miss this fabulous entertainer.
He was very, very entertaining. Smooth on the guitar and in great voice!!! Band was great as well. We can't wait until he comes back around.
Robert Cray’s energy, giving spirit, amazing work ethic, and awesome talent were on full display at the beautiful State Theater in Kalamazoo. Worth so much more than the price of admission.
Robert Cray was excellent! His performance was lively and his playing was impeccable! The rest of the band was also excellent! The show was well worth the time and money!
