The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • An evening with The Robert Cray Band

by Bogie on 2/5/22The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

The show was outstanding! Robert never fails to give his all to his fans. Robert’s opening artist Lon Eldridge was on his A game as well. Robert of course brought it to the max with every song he played. We enjoyed the the roomy seating of the Walker Theater as well. It was a great night of entertainment in Chattanooga.

  • Foot stomping show

by Music Lover on 2/4/22The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

The Robert Cray Band was great. They had the audience so excited you would have thought we were in a tent revival. Can I get an Amen! My husband had never seen Robert Cray before but I seen them in Chattanooga back in the 80s and they haven't slowed down. Will definitely see them again!! Lon Elridge won't get any complaints out of me either. He got the crowd going with his music and participation!

Band was tight and the sound was balanced and mixed well. Great venue for artist like Robert Cray - very intimate. Thanks for a great show.

  • Perfect Venue

Everything was great... The acoustics were phenomenal. Robert was great. Very humble man. Wonderful night!

  • Great show! Saw the Robert Cray Band in 1976. He’s even bett

by Marty on 2/4/22The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

Third row center from the stage. The acoustics in the Walker are phenomenal! I feel that Cray made use of them by playing sometimes down to the lowest sound level. He interacts a bit more with the crowd than back in his early days, but still puts on more music. Very Vice venue.

  • Still Rockin’

by True on 2/4/22The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

It’s been three decades since I experienced a Robert Cray performance. He was fabulous then, and he’s fabulous now. I love his range, his unique sound, and his relaxed performance.

  • Impressively Talented

by DaveB on 2/2/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Incredible music, very talented band. The show wasn't too 'exciting' tho, while Robert does speak to the audience he's not openly interacting like many other artists do. With that said you still need to add The Robert Cray band to your bucket list, a must see show!

  • He's Hot!

by Rondoo on 2/1/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

This performance was outstanding. It was a pleasure to see a "Master" at work. Few musicians can demonstrate how to speak to perfectly through an instrument. This performer deserves every bit of praise he receives. What a talent, and his team provided outstanding support to his performance. RHD

  • Robert Cray Band at The Parker Playhouse, Ft. Lauderdale

by Big Mike on 2/1/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Surprise opening act Rachelle Coba, a locally based, but national act was a huge bonus. My wife immediately went out and got all of her music and has become a huge fan. Robert gave his all - I'd been a fan since his early days and this was the first time I had a chance to catch him live. I worried he would be a shadow of the performer I remembered and, boy, was I wrong! His band had great chemistry and each seemed to be a blues master of their instrument. Robert was very interactive with the crowd and performed a 3-song encore. Didn't rely on his biggest hits and I can't fault him for not playing the oldest, most recognizable ones (over 30 years old and he's had to play them a million times by now) although I personally wished he had. The man and band are still relevant and not an "oldies" act. The Parker Playhouse is also a really nice, upscale theatre-style venue. Great experience all around.

  • Amazing singer and musician!

What an evening it was! Thank you Mr. Cray and your band for truly amazing experience we had at your concert. Wishing you continuous success!

The Parker was an awesome intimate venue. Robert Cray is a master of his craft!

  • Master class in guitar

by Rob on 2/1/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Brilliant concert by a master craftsman and his tool, the guitar. This was a clinic on how math and music work together, Cray is absolutely a beast with his guitar solos and we are fortunate to be able to see him live. If you even think you might like Cray or this type of music you will absolutely walk away from the concert happy and wanting coffee for your breakfast with a shot of whiskey on the side!

  • Great show

by vin on 10/2/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Him many times including the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival and shows where he has played with some of the blues legends. This was his best. His player seemed inspired and his licks were smokin. His voice was at its best and he made you feel what he was singing. Robert was much more interactive with the crowd than normal and most important, he seemed to be having fun!

  • Great vibes Talented Star

    by A Ham on 10/1/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray and his band show the great, comedic vibes that make a live show worth it! The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA is a great venue that captured the great sound from this legend of a Blues guitarist. The guitar change for each song was both a comic relief and showed how much Robert cares about producing the best sound.

  • Disappointed

by Alex on 10/1/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 3 out of 5

I have been a fan for years, but was disappointed that Robert played only two songs I was familiar with. The musical and sound quality were good, but most of the songs were almost all slow tempo. He owes his success largely to his fans and should not fill his playlist with songs that were not commercially successful.

  • Outstanding event

by Outstanding on 10/1/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Playrd for 1.5 hours and had three encores. Ensured other band members were recognizing early in the show. Great time at a great venue!!!

  • We were back for more

    by T. J. tnasty from Sonoma on 12/2/19Rating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have seen RCB at the Uptown four times now. If is a fantastic venue and not a bad seat in the house. Good new songs (very bluesy) and a good selection of gems. Missed playing "I'll Always Remember You", "Side Salad", "Hip Tight Onions", and "I Guess I Showed Her" this time. Unfortunately, I think we found one location (almost the exact center of the balcony) where the sound sucked (right where our seats were). I found that by walking around a bit I could find several locations with a good mix with places close to the mixing board the best (go figure!). Good show and a tight tight band. Bassman Richard forgot his shoes again! :) Robert still stretching his skills! Will be seeing RCB again when they return to the Uptown but will get seats on the floor for best sound results next time. I was surprised by how quickly the time went by. Opening act will someday be a stupendous axe man!

  • Some private party diminished the grandeur of the show

by Guima on 10/4/19Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

As a foreign customer, I had bought only general admission tickets. Missed information on how to book seats. Once in the venue we had to wait to be accommodated on the few seats left. The show was exciting, but you could clearly see: to row 3 were Robert Cray's fans; from 4 to 20 people seemed to ignore there was a music show going on, talking loud at each other, not even looking at the stage. Clearly they were all friends and relatives, and the party continued after the show was over. I think the any artist deserves more respect.

  • Sweet!

    by C. K. on 9/30/19Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray and the band were exceptional! I adored the venue and probably had the best seats in the house! Monty, our waiter, was most kind to us and I will be back soon!
