The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Pure Art

by Casey on 10/8/22Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The caliber of Robert Cray & his band is something I haven't seen in years. He spoke through his guitar & his voice is still phenominal. The band was impressive, tight. They enjoyed playing together. I was surprised the ticket price was so affordable, compared to that charged by lesser artists. I would have paid twice the amount for this artist. Love the Carver as the venue. The sound mix on the floor was predominantly mid range, but every moment was magic. (This was the engineer, not the venue). The sound filled out beautifully in the balcony. I'm so glad I had this opportunity.

  • Great Blues/Jazz Music

  • Great Venue! Spectacular Show!

by GByePorkPieHat on 10/4/22Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I understand, now, that Jo Long Theater is a San Antonio TREASURE. Parking was ample if a little bit tight. Staff were helpful and welcoming. Venue’s seating is comfy, and easy to navigate. PLUS, I doubt there is a bad seat in this house. Now … The Robert Cray Band … consummately professional, engaging and entertaining. I could easily understand that after all these years these guys still play TOGETHER, listen to each other and get a charge from audience energy. Thank you Carver Center, and thank you Robert Cray Band.

This was my first show at the Carver and I will be back. Very nice venue. Good size. Good acoustics. Great show. Staff were nice. I like that no food or drinks are allowed in the house.

  • Great Venue!

What an amazing venue in San Antonio. Friendly, helpful staff with clean restrooms and excellent acoustics. Robert Cray was certainly ready for the enthusiastic crowd. He did not disappoint. His band was tight and supported his guitar work superbly.

  • Great performance. But few of his hits 😞

by Fredster on 9/25/22Rating: 3 out of 5

Robert does lots of his newer material, especially songs from “That’s What I Heard”. As an example, “Anything you want”, from that album is a great opener. I became familiar with his set lists beforehand. So I knew what to expect and that meant only a few of his hits from his rock radio days. You have to wait until the end of the show to hear “I guess I showed her” and “The forecast calls for pain”. Excellent versions. But where is “Don't be afraid of the dark”, “Consequences”, and his signature “Smoking gun”, as well as other songs from “Strong Persuader”? That album was huge BITD and it put him on the map. Robert is an exceptional guitarist with a very tight 3 piece band supporting him. But without the hits, I wouldn’t recommend unless you just want to see one of the greatest living blues guitarists on the planet.

Robert Cray is my favorite Blues artist. The band is awesome and put on a great concert. It was well worth the two-year wait. The venue is perfect -- easy to find, free parking, great sound and not a bad seat in the house. Whenever the Robert Cray Band is playing in Milwaukee, especially at Potawatomi, I make sure I have a ticket!

  • Always a strong performance

by bartman on 2/15/22Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

I haven't missed a Robert Cray show since the early Nineties, and he always seems to amaze me. It's incredible that he's been performing and recording for over forty years now. Robert's guitar is amazing, but I'm still floored by how smooth and powerful his voice is today. This tour has one of the stronger setlists that I can remember, which is normally the only improvement I'd make, and it would make me happier to sprinkle in some older material. Don't miss the show!

  • Fabulous

by Leesa on 2/7/22The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second time seeing Robert Cray, and he didn't disappoint. I have listened t him for about 26 years now and still sounds the same all the way through the years.of course with so much music that he has done, there were a few songs I was hoping to hear that weren't played but no one can pick what songs are played.

  • Must See

by The Galvan’s on 2/6/22The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

U tube videos provide no justification to the quality of sound and pro-performance that RC Band produce live! The robust blues sound w/the genuine, mastered, clarity, vocal octave of Robert Cray is a must see!
