Rating: 2 out of 5Not the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory you know and love.
by New Orleans Gene Wilder Willie Wonka Fan on 2/19/20Saenger Theatre New Orleans - New OrleansIf you're expecting the 1964 Gene Wilder version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory of this play, this is not for you. To my disappointment great license was taken with Veruca Salt (turned into a Russian ballerina), Violet Beauregard (hip hop gum chewing bedazzled "Queen of Pop"), Mike Teavee (grunge video game/television addict that looked like a crackhead and his drug addicted mother who sang about all of the pills she took). Augustus Gloop was the most authentic character and quite delightful along with Charlie. No Slugworth to be seen and no "Fizzie Lifting Drink" scene. The stage sets were a bit sparse and relied heavily on projected screen images. Best part was the Oompa Loompas (if you don't mind the having orange hair) with gave me a few chuckles. Had high hopes for this but left empty. Sadly very little nostalgia here... Why can't they leave well enough alone without having to put "their mark" on it. Don't mess with perfection.
