  • Quite unique!

    by Sully68 on 2/23/10Fitzgerald Theater - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Rickie Lee Jones was amazing. She was very open on stage, directing the band through songs that they had not rehearsed. The creativity on stage was great, and she did a great new rendition of Chucky E's in Love. Truly wonderful, and relaxing.

  • Chuckie and I are in love with RLJ

    by Kay9 on 2/23/10Fitzgerald Theater - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

It was a intimate setting as the Fitzgerald Theatre is rather small. Rickie was talking quite a bit, sometimes as if she was speaking out loud to herself but was aware that the audience would hear her. She used her extraordinary voice in unique and awesome ways. She complained about the equipment not working properly - the monitor, her guitar, the piano. She seemed fatigued or like she wasn't feeling good. She sat, talked and tried to tune her guitar and finally gave up and asked a stage hand to tune it for her. Her rollercoaster energy was almost palpable - she seemed to tire by the end of a song. It was nice to learn the background as to what was happening to her at the time she wrote the song or what her inspiration was. At the end she announced she felt good and would play two more songs. She played one and abruptly said she was done and left the stage. There was a long show of enthusiasm from the crowd as the lights went up. 1/3 of the audience left before Rickie returned to the stage and played a song that was shouted from a fan. She was solo and seemed to enjoy the interaction and appreciation of the crowd .

  • Rickie's got talent

by wwoman on 2/23/10Fitzgerald Theater - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

And I thought I only knew one of her songs...Chuck E's In Love...I was quite mistaken. I recognized many of the pieces she performed for us. It was raw and real, showcasing such natural ability! This was just a really good show, with an appreciative audience. If I could afford it, I'd catch a flight to NYC for her show on Thurs. It'd be easy to sit through another couple of hours of Rickie and her small entourage.

  • ricki so so

by caleeri on 2/23/10Fitzgerald Theater - St PaulRating: 3 out of 5

first time hearing ricki live and had great expectations. she started off a little off key but warmed up and i enjoyed the performance very much. but you had the feeling she just wasn't that 'into it'. like she didn't really want to be there that night. i doubt i'd pay good money to go again for that little enthusiasm.

  • Rickie Lee Jones!!!

Incredible! Unpredictable! Rickie lives for public performance! A true (and real) class act!!!

  • WOW

by karinthegarage on 2/23/10Fitzgerald Theater - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Wonderful concert -- intimate, relaxing, stellar musicianship (bass guitar and drummer/piano player were magnificent!). Delightful all around! though I agree with Rickie Lee Jones that the piano needs tuning.

  • There's only one!

by Jeedu on 2/19/10Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Rickie Lee gave us parts off all she has last night, from crooned elegies to cool electric to her trademark thoughtful, literally off-beat rhythms. Her heart connected, for sure, and her band of bass and percussion melded with the singer's particular one-time-only approach to the great familiar hits we want to hear, as well as touching, though sometimes garbly, new tunes. Charming. I wish the audience wouldn't go crazy bringing someone back, demanding the encore we've come to expect -- then giving so little applause in thanks for the demanded encore. Wouldn't it be refreshing to just give a ton of applause, a thank, then say, 'No, you've done enough. Thanks anyway."

  • Rickie Lee Jones - delightful

by rickiefanforyears on 2/19/10Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed Rickie Lee Jones last night. She was very entertaining. Her voice was incredible. She sang as well as she did in the 80’s. I loved her attitude about aging. She is an inspiration to me.

  • Rickie Lee Jones was Depressing

by BuzzKil on 12/12/09Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 2 out of 5

Wonderful artist but very depressing. She need to take a happy pill! Having no drums of horn section was disappointing. She had moments of fun with the audience but often the show was often morose.

  • Rickie Lee, Rickie Lee!!

by AlexandriaKen on 12/12/09Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Rickie Lee's voice and music are as amazing as ever. This is NOT a nogstalia show; her range from whispers to the signature "dopler" wails have all the emotion and range of her recordings from 20 years ago. Her band was also superb, from the 19 year old mandolin player to the bassisst who may have been her contemporary or older. It was a wonderful evening of unique music from a performer and band at the top of their game

  • worth the wait

by mjcoleman on 12/11/09Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have followed RLJ for over 30 years and life and circumstances have continually conspired to make it impossible for us to see her perform live. The set list spanned her career and contained some great surprises. Definitely a special night.

  • The ultimate Rickie concern

by soundrunner on 12/11/09Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

This was the third time we saw Rickie and definitely the best. The Birchmere is a great venue for her, and she used it beautifully, playing with a small band that had great dynamic range, particularly down into the piano and pianissimo region. She really came to play and didn't seem to want to stop even at the end of the 2 1/2 hour show, when she finally bowed out saying that there would be diminishing returns if she played any longer. She played some beautiful numbers from her new album, Balm in Gilead, as well as some of her old faves, including Satellites, We Belong Together, etc. She also did a duet with the bassist on Autumn Leaves and a great solo rendition of Just Walk Away Renee, which we've only heard her do before on a Japanese import. In sum, she did everything we could have hoped for in a single concert, and did it all with energy and the same youthful voice she had twenty years ago. Fantastic!

  • Rickie Lee Jones was forgettable

by Gusser on 12/11/09Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 1 out of 5

The entire concert was joyless and "dirge" like. Plus, Ms. Jones appeared bored to be there and did not interact well with the audience. I hope no one with suicide tendencies saw the concert.

  • Memorable

by CrackedAces on 12/11/09Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

I have always been a Rickie Lee Jones fan. But this show blew me away. The old standards were done as well as I have ever heard and Rickie's recent songs are wonderful. The band was great and all the musicians would do well on their own, but as a group they were fantastic. Three hours flew by and I was wishing the night could go on longer. Great show, great musicians and Rickie, well, it just doesn't get better than Rickie.

  • RLJ is fantastic!

    by Pooley29 on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen her every time she's come to the greater Boston area, and she is always a treat. Her songs have touched many, so it's always great to see the crowd so supportive of her when she tours. This time, she played a lot of material from the new album "Balm in Gilead", which is superb. She's still got it! She also played a lot of older stuff. Last Chance Texaco, Pirates, Youngblood, Living it Up (an alternate version) and a few from her last album "Sermon". Overall, a great show, with a great supporting band. Don't miss her when she hits your town...

  • Rickie Lee Jones earns 3 standing ovations

by schnops on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Rickie Lee Jones came to boston and played a 2 hour and 20 minute show that was a complete joy. She was in great tone and her new album is filled with excellent music. She did the best songs from her debut album early in the show mixed with new songs from "Balm in Gilead". Her three band mates were excellent muscians, playing keyboards, accordion, mandolin, guitars, and stand-up electric base, and i believe even a harmonica. Rickie had her first standing ovation after Rodeo Girl and then went to the piano to play the great songs from Pirates which were some of the real highlights of the show for me. They played like they were in your living room and seemed to be improvising and making everything seem so personal, even adding in a Hank Williams and Lowell George tune for a remarkable set that I will remember for some time.

  • Rikki Lee is back!

by Tevye on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The Rikki Lee Jones show last night was fantastic. Her voice is stronger than ever and her songbook continues to expand and improve. Thanks for coming to Boston!
