    Second to none

by Kgl on 6/30/19Old Whaling Church - Edgartown

He is arguably the most talented performer I’ve ever seen live, this was the fourth concert of his I’ve been to in the past 30 years. At 70, his voice still stuns, his lyrics/ songwriting rival the best. He might be the best guitarist on the planet. One voice, one guitar, filled a vast space with no break for over 2 hours. To see him perform is to bask in the glow of greatness.

    Best of the 3 times.

by Therapidone on 6/28/19Ocean City Music Pier - Ocean City

This was the third time I've attended a Richard Thompson performance, and it was the best of the 3 in my opinion. The duet with Joan Osborne of "Let It Be Me" was a surprise opening in his set and beautifully done. His rapport with the audience was much greater than his earlier concerts that I attended. His humor was at times self-effacing and at others he used false braggadocio. His guitar playing was magnificent, and his choice of songs ranged from "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", written by his old Fairport Convention bandmate, Sandy Denny to cuts from his 2018 release, 13 Rivers. He finished the night with 2 separate encore appearances capping a solid, wonderful 2-hour performance. And his guitar-playing and voice were every bit as strong as 30 years ago...and probably well before that...not bad for a 70-year old!

    Great show

by mares on 5/20/19The Cabot - Beverly

The Cabot Theater in Beverly, MA was beautiful and had great acoustics. We had table sitting with two other very friendly people. The opening act was perfect - good songs, well-performed but not overwhelming. Richard Thompson came on, just him and an acoustic guitar, and proceeded to blow everyone away with amazing guitar work, great songs, strong vocals and some humor thrown in to offset the generally depressing material (a point that was the basis for some very funny comments). He also interacted with the audience in an entertaining manner. He played a good long set and two encores to a very appreciative crowd.

    Unbelievable!

by Dr. Paisley on 2/6/19The Fillmore - San Francisco

I've been going to see Richard for about 15 years. His electric shows are a special treat. This one at the Fillmore was one of the best I've seen. Besides the usual humor, depth, pathos, tragedy, and spirit of his evocative songs, his guitar work was truly unbelievable. A stellar show from start to finish, including lots of new material and a few songs he wrote 50 years ago that still sound fresh. He is the real deal -- captivating guitar, singing, songs, and arrangements, not to mention a killer band.

by Moose on 2/4/19The Fillmore - San Francisco

Richard Thompson rocks an amazing guitarist composer vocalist performer. Richard was great the sound was impeccable in the back of the Fillmore. It was a little crowded to force my way to the front. In other words the people I was with where weak! His hearing is really great seeing as how he wasn’t wearing ear monitors the sound and harmonies were pretty damn good. Either electric or acoustic Richard Thompson entertains. He played songs that he wrote 50 years ago that sounded fresh and timely today! If you’ve never listen to Richard Thompson check out his album Rumor and a Sigh ! this man knows how to rock .

    RT GREAT, HOB BAD

by fairportconvention on 5/3/17House of Blues New Orleans - New Orleans

Richard was 5 stars. Simply a phenomenal talent after all these years. The HOB venue is just awful. They need chairs or stools or something. I guess if you know what your getting into it's one thing but it wasn't clear when I ordered that I would need to stand the whole time.

    1952 Vincent Black Lightning

by Rebunga on 5/3/17House of Blues New Orleans - New Orleans

A 1952 Vincent Black Lightning is a cantankerous old classic motorcycle. It needs meticulous tuning and careful maintenance to remain in top performance. Fortunately it is clear that Richard has been going beyond the basics to keep in top form. He is undiminished in wit, dexterity, and voice over these many years. My first time seeing him - among a room full of music nerds - it was a great a great way to spend the Sunday after Jazz Fest. One minor issue is that the late middle-aged male audience's enthusiasm for this performer made it very difficult to get a beverage and return to your spot. Many did not want to give way due to their ardor to matriculate to the front of the room. Elbows had to be thrown. If there is a folk guitarist who can incite a fistic encounter among music nerds - this is him.

Performance Brilliant. Audience a Question Mark

    by BruceK1 on 4/29/17Carolina Theatre - Durham

Richard was at his inimitable best. Had my rapt attention and involvement from the opening number to the final encore. What I found objectionable was a an elderly usher coming to relay a request from a geriatric audience member behind me to demand that I cease clapping during musical numbers. I must say that this is the first time I was ever told that audience participation was frowned upon during any of my concertgoing experiences. And I've been to thousands of shows over the course of my lifetime. I wasn't shouting or acting inebriated or anything of the sort, but some fuddy-duddy found my clapping along irritating, I gather, so I ceased and desisted, knowing that I would be facing some sort of confrontation with some ego riddled old Blue Meanie should I persist. So I behaved myself and watched the rest of the show with my hands folded calmly in my lap. I should have known that the venue would frown on any show of spontaneity or musical communion from the audience. I ws chuckling to myself before the show as one of the the warm up recorded tunes was Dylan's"Knockin on Heaven's Door," and I looked around at the blue and gray headed audience and thought to myself "What an appropriatetitle to play for this audience." Some of the members would probably make it to the Pearly Gates before sunrise. The typical audience at the Carolina Thater look as if they've arrived via tour bus from one of Del Webb's Golden Meccas from somewhere in the Southeast.

    Greatness is often under appreciated

by Hfgjgffthhhh on 2/19/17Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Richard Thompson has been writing and playing music for 50 years. Unfortunately he works in the out of favor folk rock genre. His literary, poetic lyrics and world class guitar playing isn't as popular as overproduced meaningless pop music. SAD!

    Richard Thompson

by JimWin on 2/19/17Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I'm glad I finally got to see Richard Thompson after so many years. It's even more apparent in a live setting how incredible a musician and singer he is, with a great sense of humor. Age has not diminished any talents, instead seems to get better like a fine single malt. Gurf Morlix was a pleasure as well, someone I've only heard of as a producer or player on Lucinda Williams work. Great guitar player and story teller.
