If your only exposure to Richard Thompson is through his studio recordings, you are in for a treat. Live, Thompson stretches musical boundaries that he merely bumps up against on his studio albums. His solos do deliberately brutal things to both key and time signatures, and mostly this works; even when it doesn't, you can appreciate the attempt. The other two members of the Electric Trio (Michael Jerome on drums and bassist Taras Prodaniuk) fill out the sound perfectly. I saw The Who on their last tour and I wonder what that show would have been like if everyone in that band had been enjoining themselves as much as the Electric Trio seemed to. The only downside (if you want to call it that) to this show is that, nearly a week later, I'm finding it difficult to listen to commercial crud on local radio.
