Overall it was a great show.
I am an avid fan of the musical, and I am always open to various interpretations of the different roles within the framework of the show; however, I saw this on closing night at the San Diego Civic Center, and found the understudy to Kaleb Wells very lacking in emotional engagement as well as familiarity with the role of Roger. Very difficult to connect emotionally with the musical that evening because of the lack of chemistry between Mimi and Roger in combination with the issues with pitch in his voice in this particular role.
I have no doubt he is an extremely talented performer; however, I was severely disappointed with his "interpretation" of the role of Roger. It seemed more like he was thrown into the role last minute because of some sort of emergency which is definitely not his fault. I would have loved to see Kaleb Wells play the role as the videos I've seen on the company website sound wonderful. With that said, the videos I've seen of Christian in the role of Benny on the company website sound great as well. I can't help but think something happened last minute to force him into a role he was simply uncomfortable with.
Tom Collins was masterful, out-of-this-world unbelievably amazing as were Joanne and Maureen. Just as good if not better than the final Broadway cast. Maureen brought a refreshing element of humor to her protest scene, and JOANNE. CAN. STRAIGHT. UP. SING! Angel absolutely killed it as well, and my wife (a dance instructor) noted that Angel's choreography and voice, particularly in "Today for You" were masterful. Mark's voice was spot on, and he seemed to bring a more gentle and humorous tone to the role which was wonderful. I loved how he braved many of the subtle notes that I thought Anthony Rapp did so well without using vibrato to maneuver around the difficulty of holding them so smoothly, particularly in his solo parts at the beginning of La Vie Boheme, Halloween, and Goodbye Love.
Would love to see it again with the cast members in their right place.
