The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows six awkward adolescents through their daunting and hilarious championship quest. As they navigate the tournament’s pressures, the eccentric coterie finds a new sense of belonging. Along the way, they learn that there is more to life than winning a trophy. This charming coming-of-age tale also invites four volunteers from the audience to participate in each performance, ensuring new and unexpected comedy every night. Peter Flynn (1776) returns to direct this heartwarmingly quirky Tony-winning musical comedy.
Enjoyed every minute from beginning to end. Great cast, wonderful singing and a feel good storyline.
Great musical for teens and adults. Full of laughs.
It was very exciting to be in such a historical place and to see this production. Very moving to look up and see where President Lincoln was sitting and to know his life ended far to soon. President's Lincoln vision of equal rights took another 100 years to be reached
Great audience participation and comedy. This is now my most favorite comedy/musical ever! These kids work their tails off and do a great job! I was visiting DC but I hope they come to San Francisco so I can take my whole family.
The WaPo review was so wrong... I think I liked this performance better than when I saw it on Broadway!
Witty and a lot of fun! Music and lyrics were upbeat and the actors were amazing- Looked like they were having a good time.
The Spelling Bee was a great, fun evening of entertainment. The show itself is hilarious and adding four members from the audience gave it the additional flair of spontaneity.
We live closer to Broadway than we do Ford's Theater, but we were on a visit with a college son and his girlfirend. Firstly, the theater looks amazing! Renovations are awesome, sound system superb, not a bad seat in the house. This musical is fun and appropriate for any age, and the cast was just as good if not better than anything I've seen In NY. Consider this my standing ovation!
My 14-year-old nephew was visiting, and I wanted to add something cultural, but not too heavy, to the itinerary of a DC United game and a few museums. This was perfect--it was fun and lively and dealt with themes and characters that he easily recognized. In addition, I think he was a bit proud of himself for catching many of the inside jokes and asides. I'm pretty sure he would not have chosen to do this on his own, but he appeared to be glad that we went.
Excellent! Cast, seating, venue...loved it. Saw it first in NYC on Broadway. This was just as good if not better
Very funny, well-performed - Ford's theater is a nice venue, cozy. Production is feel-good, light-hearted, lots of LOL moments. Good fun.
I was skeptical at first. How can you make a great theatre production based on a spelling bee? I would say that the cast and orchestra pulled it off in grand fashion. I had family in town and wanted them to have the Ford's Theatre experience. After four days of doing all the things we could fit into a short DC visit, this production was agreed by all to be the highlight of their trip! Outstanding performance! I am a Ford's contributor and will continue to be. There is nothing like a night (day in this case - Friday 2:00 performance) at the theatre.
I can't say enough about how entertaining we found this show. We laughed the whole time. So many clever lines and the songs and the dance numbers were fantastic!
We were visiting DC for Spring Break and were thrilled to have opportunity to attend a mid-week show in Ford's Theater. When we came to box office, my 11-year-old registered as a potential stage contestant (after a brief oral spelling test). The staff wanted adults and did not tell us -- we only found out once show began. That caused distress for oungest daughter. The gay parents in the plot were tolerable, but the on-going erection joke for a contestant (actor in plot) was offensive. Older teens thought it was funny -- I did not because my sixth-grader (the age of real spelling bee contestants) does not yet understand sexual arousal in boys!
I had no idea what the play was going to be about and was PLEASANTLY surprised! It was hilarious, capturing, & very well acted. The music was terriffic!
I had no expectations of this play and I was completely blown away by the performance. I came with my two teenage children and husband and we all absolutely loved it and were totally entertained from start to finish. There is something special when you look at the audience and everyone is laughing and enjoying themselves. It's even more special when it's your own family. The performers were top notch as was the live music by the orchestra. Ford theatre is beautiful and all seats have good viewing of the stage, so if you are on a budget you can sit further back in the less expensive seats and still be fine. This was truly a perfect evening.
The smiles and laughter begin from the opening scene and last throughtout the show! I highly recommend this performance to everybody who desires a great evening of entertainment in a beautiful setting with fantastic lighting and sound system. The performers are excellent and right on cue with their lines and movements. All had wonderful voices. We will see it again before it closes.
So funny. Audience participation! Actors are very talented.
It was a delightful, funny, endearing play! Loved the music, singing, dancing, the characters, and the jokes.
I did not really know anything about this musical and was very pleased with the performance. There was plenty of humor as well as a thoughtful message about the importance of parents. I would definitely recommend this to my friends!
