Such a Great Voice & Creative Performance Artist
by Jrzcat on 11/18/17Count Basie Theatre - Red BankRating: 4 out of 5I've seen this act 4 times over the past 3 years, both pre and post his AGT appearance. This boy's got incredible chops and subtle campy quirkiness that is infectious. He has brilliantly framed his style as a sad side, angst ridden clown which is a narrative that is immediately accessible, zeitgeist and classic, and at times damn powerful. But you have to balance it with humor, which is done through vignettes, video, and unfortunately increasing audience participation. I say unfortunate because he is such a talent, all one wants is to hear him sing. The AP part of the show detracts too much from the core message. Yes, we suffer together, laugh together, and are just trying to figure things out together, but we come to hear Puddles sing to us first and I felt his last performance was much less singing than I paid for. Two standards were left out - Royals, the Lourdes song that launched him to fame, and his hilarious and brilliant rendition of Dancing Queen which is compared/contrasted via video backdrop to the campy-yet-quintessential masculinity of a showdown/hoedown between Popeye the Sailor and Brutus. Both pieces are firebrands for the Puddles core message which is 'our egos are but straw men'. I think these were too important to be left out to make room for the creative Floyd/Cash mash-up switcheroo of Pinball Wizard/Fulton County Prison, even though these are a gorgeous listen and equally important part of the repertoire. Better to drop the one dimensional and drawn out Danny Boy. The old adage is "always leave them wanting more", but not to the point of frustration... There were frustrating technical issues as well which should have been addressed in rehearsal: when the mic is pulled away from the mouth to cushion a loud belt, there should still be sound coming out of the speakers. Coitus interruptus. Puddles Pity Party is unique and still holds the potential to be something powerfully relevant to our times to the point of sensational, if only this artist would allow himself to truly wow and woo the audience by singing to them and for them...and get the backing/support he truly deserves. To be continued!
