  • Public Image, my own creation

by shrabi on 5/6/10Royale Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Impressive set list from John and the boys--it focused at first on their earlier, more experimental stuff, had 2 or 3 "hits" in the middle, and a couple of lesser known tunes (a song he did with Leftfield) thrown in. John was occasionally drinking from a half gallon whiskey bottle. The band was tight, loud, and switched instruments often, giving songs like "Flowers of Romance" great depth of sound and energy. Lydon noted a couple of times that people seemed to be there to watch and analyze him, but that they came to have fun. The crowd was quite small (maybe 250), but Lydon reacted when first taking the stage, saying "we're among friends". Overall a good night!

  • PiL -Boston, Royale, USA, May 4th 2010 (1st night)

    by MRyan6692 on 5/5/10Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The only negative thing I could say is that the crowd was smaller than it deserved to be. It's a shame since it was such a fantastic show. I hope this US tour achieves its goal of making enough money to fund a new PiL album. With such a stellar band, it would be a shame if PiL did not get a chance to make new music for us to enjoy. There were many highlights last night, but my favorite part was "Death Disco" and "Flowers or Romance" played back-to-back. I spent the morning searching the Internet to find out what other stringed instruments Lu Edmonds played in addition to standard electric guitars. It looks like he played an electric saz (three-stringed guitar) and a cumbus (sort of like a banjo with 12 strings). He was terrific as was the rhythm section of Scott Firth and Bruce Smith. John was his usual entertaining self and we even had the pleasure of him castigating a "fan" who spat at him during "Religion". As John pointed out, how ironic was it that a Christian took offense and responded by spitting. Brilliant!!

Great group of musicians and one should never pass up the chance to see John Lydon.

  • WAY better then expected

There are shows like this that look like old band reunions... This looked like Pil had been practicing for the last 30 years. Outstanding performance.

  • PiL old-school

by zonker17 on 5/5/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The man has not lost it! John delivered vocally and in style. A rare treat. The band was equally impressive with a near perfect sound mix at the venue. Mostly older tracks performed, all of which were welcome.

  • Welcome Back Public Image Limited

by JTS5 on 5/4/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the show at the House Of Blues in Chicago. They played some really good songs that I wanted to hear in concert for a long long time. Last time I saw them was at Popular Creek when they were on tour for the Happy record. What was excited to me was they skipped some of the commercial success songs, even thou songs like: The Warrior, Disappointed and Open UP (Left Field) were even fun to hear. But they did played there best stuff that I happen too like: Bags, This Is Not A Love Song, Chant, Rise, Religion, Flowers Of Romance and a few other songs that really moved me. Plus, Johnny still has his voice and was very entertaining like usual. It's too bad that they didn't play: Bad Life, Solitaire, The Order Of Death, FFF, Fishing, Round, Home, and Angry. But as they say? They only can play so many songs in one night. So yes, I was very pleased with the show and hope they come back again.

  • PiL revisited

by teejjames on 5/4/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

it had been 30 years since i last saw pil and they still have a great and unique sound...they played most of the "big" songs including a great rendition of religion...johnny espoused a lot of poitical views and he had a crowd that agreed for the most part...songs i was hoping to hear and didn't were under the house, fff and analissa...but all is well w/ pil...the sound system at house of blues has a lot to be desired

  • Well worth the wait!

by Prugna on 5/3/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Their albums don't do them justice. PiL live was an experience I will never forget. For about the first thirty minutes of their two-hour show, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I still can't believe I saw them live. Thank you, PiL.

  • Johnny at his BEST

by Smokeater2 on 5/3/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The band was as good as they have ever been. It has been a long time since they came to Chicago, but they sounded great. The show lasted about two hours. I can't say enough about how good it was. It was also nice that Johnny thank everyone for comming out, he sounded like he ment it.

  • PiL

by prahabukowski on 5/3/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

PiL played a great set focusing mostly on their first few albums(the good one) with choice cuts from latter albums. The low end sounded amazing.

  • PiL is not religion

by TdieZ on 5/3/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

It's been so long since the Happy? tour when I saw Public Image Ltd. at the Riv that it's difficult to compare the two but Johnny and gang put on a compelling show last night at Chicago's House of Blues where their well-engineered sound was enough to make me happy without the need for the gimmicky visual trappings found at arena concerts. My wife mentioned that their songs were better live than on record and I have to agree, but that's maybe because my old stereo isn't capable of handling some of their music. I tried playing a record from the Metal Box and couldn't turn the volume up past two, while hearing their bass heavy music live, especially during "Religion" (which might cause the foundations of any number of churches to crumble to the ground), was a refreshing treat.

Truly one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. I have seen PiL twice previously (1985-6 and 1993) and they blew the earlier shows out of the water. The energy and musical complexity by the band and the showmanship of Mr. Lydon were all top notch. They played 2 hours non-stop, no crap, no opening band, just a show of total entertainment. This will probably be the last time they ever play. I encourage anyone who is "on the fence" about seeing a 56-year old John Lydon perform to go ahead and get a ticket.

  • John Lydon hits the spot

by Danxx on 5/3/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Have not seen these guys for years and was not sure what to expect. I was not disappointed. From start to finish this was two hours of full-on, in-you face PIL at its best. John Lydon still has the guts and drive to say it as it is and deliver. The sound was great and the base just rips through you. Well done, look forward to his next visit to Chicago in 17 years !!!!

  • PIL was excellent

I saw them back in the 80s and this show also rocked.

  • PIL @ HOB

by nenajo on 5/3/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Jonny never sounded better and really has his act together! It was awesome to hear some old stuff and reminisce of the old punk days. The band was excellent and the songs were lengthy, as was the show. It was definitely worth seeing, so glad I didn't miss this one!

  • PIL rocked !
