  • surprisingly fantastic!

by stephgg on 5/17/10Club Zoo - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

I have always enjoyed PIL, but have really, REALLY liked John Lydon as a personality. So when I got the chance to see him live, I jumped at it. A punk legend! And I think he is just hilarious. So I really wasn't expecting too much more than that. I thought the show'd last maybe an hour. WELL, what I got was the expectedly cheeky and awesome Johnny Rotten, in top sarcasm and showmanship. Even more, though, the SHOW WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! Musically, it was SO TIGHT! And they sounded great--John's voice was tip-top (he's 58??? WOW!), the instruments were dead on, the arrangements were great, even the backing vocals were fantastic!!! Really, I can't say enough about what a great show it was, musically. And to have the cheeky Johnny Rotten on top of that?? Priceless. Only thing I'd have liked is an actual spotlight on Johnny. Couldn't get a decent photo-op!! Boo.

  • PIL WAS AWESOME

What can I say, PIL was a awesome show. Johnny was in great form, and sounded even better. If you get the chance to go and see them, do it. It is well worth the money and time. Very entertaining. I would love to see them again. Johnny maybe 54, but seemed as young as ever.

  • Excellent show

Though not a PIL fanatic, I was moderately interested in seeing this show. I arrived a little after they started and was immediately drawn to Johnny Lydon's voice which I had under appreciated through the years. By the end of the show, I was determined to download as much PIL as I could find.

Drove from Akron OH to see this show. The band was worth the drive, the venue was not.

  • Johnny Delivered

by seriouspunk on 5/15/10Club Zoo - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

The a voice that is unmistakable and powerful - Johnny and PIL rocked the house. With vocals that were more calibrated than in the days of the Sex Pistols the show was a great mix of punk ballads and spinetingling rock.

  • Often imitated, never surpassed.

by chameleonman on 5/15/10Club Zoo - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Public Image Limited was the first band to mix the aggression of punk with the driving beats of disco back in 1979 on their seminal Metal Box album. Since then, many have tried to recapture the energy and power of that album and that time, but no one can match the original. John Lydon was in fine form alternately belting out vicious lyrics and berating the audience as only the former Mr. Rotten can do. The backing band was more than up to the task of bringing to life almost a decade and a half worth of PiL's back-catalog. Highlights included "This Is Not a Love Song", "Death Disco", "Flowers of Romance", and "Rise." If you're curious where bands like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, and Radio 4 got their sound from, look no further.

  • Johnny is Still Rotten and All Showman!

by RhondaK on 5/15/10Club Zoo - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Club Zoo was a fantastic venue - and it was quite an excellent choice NOT to have opening bands. We would have appreciated some ventilation, but really what's a punk show with a/c? PIL members and Rotten put on a GREAT show - it's amazing how the older he gets, the better the show ... truly. Lots of energy from PIL, not so much the floor crowd - I suspect the heat. Rotten is even more punk rock now since he makes music that is not just re-hashing Sex Pistols material. Great comedian onstage as well - excellent eye contact and banter. Overall, worth the ticket price and I would see both PIL and visit Club Zoo again.

Absolutly incredible! I can't say enought about it.

  • PIL the very best

by GrayfinB on 5/12/10Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

With a scant crowd of no more than 100, the evening in the words of J. Lydon, was just for "friends". He is a mesmerizing singer, unconventional and with a style of his own was able to cast a mezmerizing spell on the audience. When I stopped gaping, I was finally able to lighten up and dance, something Boston audiences are reluctant to do at concerts. With a minimum of computerized add-ins, the band was excellent. Unusual instruments (a steinbrenner stand-up base-ghostly!- and an electrified lute like instrument all played by experts, made us feel wild, just wild. Bye!

  • PiL awesome

by guzzleboy on 5/7/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was an absolutely amazing show. I've seen PiL 3 times now , the first 2 being back in the 80's and this group is as talented as it gets. Johnny is still belting out the songs as good as ever. The guitar, bass, and drums were spot on and the small group atmosphere of the HOB made it all the more special. Many of the songs I'd nerver heard before and they were all enjoyable.

  • P.I. L. at Club Royal was amazing

    by Edz62 on 5/6/10Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

PIL ended the night with "Open Up" a song he recorded with the band Left Field in 1993 it was a blast of pure 90's electro-clash techno! They play over 2 hours and touched almost every phase they went through as a band. Now I wish I went both nights.

  • Rotten on form

by nagvirr on 5/6/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I last saw PiL in Edinburgh, Scotland in the early '90s and was mesmorised by John Lydon's performance. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to go to the HoB gig but I had fairly low expectations. How wrong. He has lost none of his charm and controversy. The sound was excellent as were the musicians, Lydon kept his vocal chords lubricated with a gargle with what looked like brandy after every song. His performance was magnificent throughout the set featuring all the classic PiL anthems.

by texasjules on 5/6/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

An earth-shatteringly wonderful show, and experience in general. Beautiful theater! John and the band were in top form and tight sounding, despite the pitiful attendance for such an historic show. I traveled over 500 miles one way to see the show, and if work would allow, would do it for every city! Go, even if you "can't go". JUST DO IT! :)

  • PIL fabulous!

    by dogzilla16 on 5/6/10Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Prefer small venues, could get up close & personal! He was fabulous, and the band was together as well.

  • PiL !!! Here's Johnny !!!

  • Phenominal Show in Boston

    by srb5156 on 5/6/10Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

John Lydon and his newly reformed band, Public Image Ltd., put on an incredible show on Wednesday May 5th at the Boston Royale. As Lydon hit the stage he commented, using adjectives and nouns like only he could, on the incompetence of the newly outfitted Royale's management in publicizing the two stops that Pil had in Boston resulting in an unfortunately low number of fans. Nevertheless, Lydon and his mates launched into a blistering 18 song set with "This is not a Lovesong". Right away the crowd was into it. Lydon leaves everything on the stage no matter if it's in front of 10 or 10,000. He was dancing to the rhythm section featuring a thunderous bass played by Allan Dias. Guitar work by John McGeoch approached and exceeded the original Keith Levene. Lydon touched on most of PiL's recordings. Following Lovesong, the second edition favorites including Poptones, Memories, Bad Baby, and Albatross were thrown at the crowd at a machine gun pace. Followed by Death Disco and Flowers of Romance, Lydon had the set running. Psychopath, Warrior and USIS 1 followed. With the sanctamonius smile and snear that made his former self so memorable, he acknowledged "what friends are for" in Disappointed. Bags , Chant, and Religion rounded out the first set. As an introduction to Religion, some "Christian gobbed" on John prompting him to launch of on a monologue about the Catholic Church and his experience at being sexually abused as a kid and the fact that nothing has changed. Their encore featured Public Image Ltd from their debut album, followed by a rousing version of Rise, finally ending with Open Up. Sorry for all those poor slobs watching the Sox and Bruins play. You missed a legend, Maybe next time.

  • Nothing rotten about Lydon

    by SidFishnuts3 on 5/6/10Royale Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

A half-empty Royale did not stop John Lydon and Co.from putting on a strong,well-played two hour set of the dance-trance disco noise that is distinctly Public Image music. Mr.Rotten was not pleased at the low turnout, but made it known that he was there to play for us faithful, and delivered lots of faves, including "This Is Not A Love Song","Flowers of Romance","Memories", "Death Disco","Rise",and my favorite,"Public Image." Excellent band, excellent mix by the sound crew.
