About

Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

  • Primus at the Greek, great band great venue

    8/6/25 Primus at the Greek, Los Angeles, CA. Another late ticket grab did not disappoint. I first saw Primus in 1993 and I have seen them (and other Les Claypool projects) probably 40 times. They have reached a new fresh level with the addition of Shreveport, Louisiana drummer John Hoffman who really just slays this music. This show featured many special guests, including Bill Burr and Matt Stone each sitting in on drums for a song, and actual musicians Justin Chancellor and Danny Carey from Tool and also MonoNeon (Prince's last bassist) helping out. Also, opener Ty Segall did his best Ozzy tribute and sang N.I.B. His band's opening set was heavy guitar driven rock and was a perfect addition to the tour. It was a great night of music with many highlights. The lighting design and graphics are always top tier but it is the music that stands out with Les Claypool leading the charge.

    We bought VIP tickets for Friday, the last night of the tour. The venue, Chanel 24 was a great and staff was amazing. The VIP portion was ran very well. Early lines for the VIP poster, question/answer, and early entry went very smoothly. During the question/answer portion Primus was incredible, but people could have come up with better questions. Of course….. Primus SUCKS!! And….. Of Course PRIMUS Sucks!!!! They were amazing

    Primus was awesome I wish I would of remembered about all the light effects. Could of dabbled. In some fun stuff. I will be seeing them again on next tour. For sure. Had an awesome time. The venue was the best size. Channel 24.

    Went to last date of the tour with the new drummer at a new venue as well. Both the new drummer and the new venue were amazing. I loved the diversity of the set as someone who sees a lot of Primus the setlist was not all the usual stuff and I’m super into that.

    I went the first night and it really made me want to go the second night. They played just about every favorite song of mine. I felt like the new drummer is still finding his groove a bit, but overall a super fun show!

    Seeing Primus live was spectacular!! Seeing Les Claypool play bass live was priceless!! And The Greek is always a treat. Such a beautiful venue -- my favorite in LA!! 5 stars for sure.
