About

Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

  • Primus does not disappoint

by Vera the retired A&E reporter on 8/10/25Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Playing at a small venue, like the 6000-seat Griffith Park Greek Theater in Los Angeles, Primus had a full house with the entire crowd bobbing their heads and grooving to the beat of Les Claypool's lead base throughout the concert. The band takes the audience on a ride that ends up with positive, festive, body language. Smiles were on everyone's faces. A good time was had by all as Claypoool's haunting bass beat mesmerized the audience into a trance-like state. The lead guitarist and the drummer were also integral parts of the band lending to its hypnotic nature.

Primus always put on such an entertaining show and never disappoints. I also really enjoyed the venue. Channel 24 is a great venue, with no bad view. I will definitely be returning here for shows.

  • Awesome!

Primus delivers another epic show! Les and Larry always know how how to deliver a memorable experience.

  • Primus rocks

by ScottP on 8/9/25Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

We all chant "Primus sucks"at the shows as an inside joke, but in reality Primus always rocks! The new drummer John Hoffman is fine, no need to worry about the large shoes he has to fill. Les Claypool was fantastic on bass and funny and unpredictable as expected.

  • Primus was amazing!

by Eyeso on 8/9/25Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Primus at the Greek theater was amazing. The Greek theater is a beautiful venue. Primus sounded Wonderful. The crowd was great. My only complaint is the beer was way too expensive at $22 a can that’s ridiculous.

  • Great show

by Danny on 8/6/25Arizona Financial Theatre - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Primus puts on a great show. Just wish the merch line wasn't so long. I'm not going to miss the show to get a t shirt or poster. But if the line wasn't so long I would have probably got both.

  • Good show, but I didn't know a lot of the music

by realmacoy21 on 8/5/25Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

I hoped to hear all the stuff I know from Primus, but they played a lot of unknown music, which isn't as exciting. Also, the venue has large screens too help see the performers, but these weren't in use.

  • PRIMUS was awesome

PRIMUS was amazing such talent Sound system was perfect We were not allowed to stand on the back wall so we watched it on a screen in the lobby

  • Epic Night reliving our teens

Great night to see Primus in San Diego, the weather was perfect for an outdoor show, the music was brilliant, and the scene was A 90's revival! Glad we made it out (past 9pm even)

by Po on 8/5/25Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

The crowd was reeved up for their Saturday night. Primus came on a bit after 9. After a run thru instrumental test, they tore into “I want to be a Fisherman.” Great graphics, ecstatic crowd. “Here we go I thought. There’s a new album out apparently, and they played a few of those. Solid stuff. It doesn’t add to their presentation that they basically don’t use spotlights. Shrouded in shadows, Claypol’s voiced a good frontman, witty banter between takes, some pretty long banters actually. In the main body of the show I recognized three songs plus the Jerry Reed silly novelty piece Amos Moses. Reed’s song is 5 minutes. Race car driver and name is mud didn’t reignite. A lot if the crowd had lost their buzz and there were entirely too many people walking about. The people closest in the two lower levels of course had the worst seats because some time maybe a decade or so ago it became normal to jump up when main act walked on and then lamely stand in front of the seat Ticketmaster sold you while dancing on your paycheck for the entire concert. No Beaver. No Puppies. The encore was a bass duel between the opener’s bassist and Claypol. Sure, playing a video of a focus group participant saying Primus was the worst band she ever saw; then projecting the branded phrase Primus Sucks before the encore was a pretty good chuckle. Playing for 75 minutes and ending at 10:45? Not that amusing. They were just punching the clock. Last year they were nothing short of a revelation. Tour less Les. Freedom comes from saying no. I’m pretty sure you have a big enough boat.

  • What an awesome concert!!

by Cali mere bear on 8/5/25Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Just wow ! Our seats were amazing! 3d row DDD. Pricy but what a view. We saw them at Sick New World and it was good but this smaller venue was way better!

  • Primus is Back!

by Gee Jay on 8/4/25Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium - ShreveportRating: 5 out of 5

Had a really great rocking time in Shreveport watching Primus. I have seen them so many times over the years, and this show brought back an energy that I haven't felt since perhaps the late 90s - to early 2000s. The whole town showed up to cheer on their hometown hero, John Hoffman, the new drummer for Primus. And he did not let them down! Hoffer Hoffington McHoffsquire can hold his own with the older cats in the band, and he is a great fit to their quirky style of heavy rock punk eclectic weirdo sound. My wife and I got to town a day early, and were even able to meet the band before the show. We had an absolutely great time; Primus is back!

  • A Bass Playing Clinic

by Old Prog Rocker on 8/4/25Arizona Financial Theatre - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Primus always puts on a great show and Les Claypool always makes it a fun experience. John Hoffman has wonderfully filled the shoes of Tim Alexander, and I look forward to new music featuring his unique talents. Like a lot of power trios, it seems that Ler doesn't get the recognition he deserves but plays such a great balancing act on this bass heavy band. The Phoenix show was just fun. I was never lucky enough to see Primus open for Rush in the early to mid 90's getting stuck with much less interesting acts like "Mr. Big"but finally caught up with Primus when they toured covering Rush's "Farewell to Kings". That was a good show. However, this show was simply outstanding. The sound was perfect and for once I walked out of a concert without phase shift in my hearing as they balanced the sound so well. The set list was diverse and obscure which is a nice change from bands who just play their hits. Of course, "Jerry was a Race Car Driver"got the crowd going the most, but "Southbound Pachyderm", "Too Many Puppies", and other greats just showcase what talent is in this band. I enjoy concerts at the Federal. It's not so large that you get lost in the crowd and retains at least a modicum of intimacy that a facility this size can offer. My only complaint was the merchandise line was so long, I wasn't able to pick up a shirt. They should have had multiple stations for purchases. I was also pleasantly surprised by the opening act, "Mono Neon". It was an interesting pairing putting two bands together with the band leader being a bass player, but in this case it worked well. They played a set that varied from hard rock, to jazz, and some great funk. Mono Neon's dueling bass solos with Les was worth the price of admission alone. So far, I've only seen one concert this year I enjoyed more, but that one will be tough to beat ever, and it is fair to say that I will look forward to the next time Primus comes to town. I have been to close to 20 concerts with my oldest child from age 10 into adulthood, but this was the first concert I have attended with my youngest who is a teen, and she enjoyed herself quite a bit as well. What can I say? PRIMUS SUCKS!

  • PRIMUS SUCKS!

by kfray on 8/4/25Arizona Financial Theatre - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Ok, they don't suck, but IYKYK. Anyway, great set, great show, cool opener. Only think about this venue that is rough is the merch line. It is awful how they have it looped through the building. I know they space is limited, but get someone to figure out a better way than the mega line they have now. It is never worth it. Tough enough the costs going up on merch, but the line is a deal breaker. Split it up into different areas or something. But other than the merch line, fantastic show.

  • Amazing show!! So happy I went!!

by Batman AZ on 8/4/25Arizona Financial Theatre - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Les and crew were incredible!! The entire event was incredible. They played songs their entire repertoire. Over 30 years of seeing Primus live, and all I can think is Primus Sucks!

  • Primus at Arizona Financial Theater

by AZ Concert Go’er on 8/4/25Arizona Financial Theatre - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic time reliving my teen years with a bad we all rocked to. AZ Financial Theater was so awesome. First time going there and the experience was fantastic. Easy access to beverages and restrooms. Would have bought swag if the lines were not so long and moved faster.
