Polyphia In Concert

Anyone who thinks they know what to expect from the prog-metal genre hasn't yet heard Polyphia. The Dallas-based group is primarily an instrumental band with some familiar reference points — Seattle group Minus the Bear's burbling math-rock riffing, glacial electronic textures, and more evocative folk fingerpicking — mixed in with funky rhythmic edges and bluesy guitar work. The 2017 single "LIT" even emphasizes jagged electric guitar riffs over plusher electronic beats.

Polyphia's 2018 album, New Levels New Devils, goes even further into uncharted territory. Opening track "Nasty" boasts intricate guest work from Jason Richardson (a guitarist known for his work with Born of Osiris and Chelsea Grin), while up-and-coming vocalist Cuco adds vocals on "So Strange." Popular single "G.O.A.T.," meanwhile, shimmers with rhythmic curlicues and latticework-like riffs that combine to create a bustling soundscape. The end result is that Polyphia — which takes its name from the word "polyphony," a musical term to describe sound built around multiple melodies — feels even more impossible to categorize.

That kind of boundary-bumping is built into the band's DNA. Guitarists Scott LePage and Timothy Henson originally formed Polyphia in 2010 while still in high school. Although the duo possesses guitar hero influences — the former is into Stevie Ray Vaughan, while the latter favors Jimi Hendrix — they also appreciate other genres, including electronic music and hip-hop. Clay Gober became bassist in 2012, while drummer Clay Aeschliman linked up with the group in 2016.

With this lineup locked into place, Polyphia exhibit the same precision live as they do on record, although they augment their focused performances with elaborate light shows and dramatic, crowd-pleasing crescendos and witty between-song banter. They've already opened for Coheed and Cambria, Between the Buried and Me, the Contortionist, and CHON, and are bona fide globe-trotters who have toured to places such as the U.K., Australia, and Japan.

One of the best performances I’ve seen.

by Ross on 11/5/23Bayou Music Center - Houston

My girlfriend and I enjoyed every second of Polyphia’s performance. I was blown away by how good they sounded live. My girlfriend had not listened to them much outside of the concert yet both of us were able to dance and enjoy every song. If you simply enjoy music and have an appreciation for the skill and talent involved in it you will love to watch these guys play. I also believed they had such fantastic chemistry together. You could tell they were really having fun with each other on stage and just working together perfectly. From playing back to back to every single instrument and their respective musician getting their own spotlight. Absolute must see!

    Epic as usual

by Trip on 11/2/23The Ritz - Raleigh

This was my second time seeing Polyphia live and they have delivered both times. VIP experience is pretty good, but the multiple tiers add confusion and time issues. The guys are super nice with each fan and the performance is stellar.

    Best Concert of Year- Polyphia

by Abztract Isight on 10/25/23History - Toronto

This was my first time seeing Polyphia live and at the History music venue. Outside line ups for VIP was a little confusing but I liked that they had a list of names to confirm who was in what line (Q&A or Meet n Greet). The only complaint was that the time the venue security team announced we would go inside kept being bumped back. Once through security, which was quick, we lined up to meet the band members. All humble nice guys. After that back outside we went, to line up again to go in for the concert. The venue is well designed and Polyphia performs on raised platforms, so you can see both Tim and Scott anywhere in the venue and even the Clays. I had great view of the drum kit. Polyphia performed like it was their first stop on their tour, yes with that kind of enthusiasm. They engaged the crowd well. The sound crew were great too. I've been to Love & Friends in Vegas, EDM in Toronto, Metal concerts, etc. this year. They all had sound issues, except Polyphia. That made it the best concert I've been to in ages. I definitely will see them again and other concerts at History! Also it was a no cash event.

    Best show I’ve ever seen

by Josh on 10/24/23History - Toronto

Unreal sound. But not unreal as in fake. I could hear a couple of lines missed on O.D in particular, showing they are actually human despite popular belief. The best show I’ve ever seen, can’t wait to see them again.

Polyphia was good, Domi and JD Beck better

by Brad on 10/20/23Uptown Theater - Kansas City

Polyphia was good, but Domi and JD Beck made the show. They had a cool vibe and offered an experience you don’t often get. They were nice enough to sign autographs and talk with fans after their set

    Well worth the trip

by David S on 10/19/23Uptown Theater - Kansas City

While the opener left a fair amount to be desired, Polyphia is absolutely a destination show in my opinion. All 4 made sure to leave the audience more than impressed with both their technical skills and their musicianship. If you have the chance to see them live, you owe it to yourself to do it. My kid and I traveled to KC just for this show, and the performance they gave made the travel all worthwhile.

    Awesome band and great sound

by Brad C on 10/19/23Uptown Theater - Kansas City

The venue is good for being small. They probably sell a few too many tickets for the amount of space but it's OK. Prepare for it to be warm. Not a great venue for short folks unless you carve out a perfect spot somewhere. The sound is great, and the stage is cool there. Polyphia sounded fantastic. They had a really basic setup with lights but I was there for the music. I think it would have been cool for them to say a few things on a mic about the songs along the way. Parking sucks at the Uptown and it's a bit of a sketchy neighborhood so if you are a girl or a couple of girls I'd recommend getting there early just to get a safe place to park or taking an Uber (or an uber to your car at a restaurant or bar).

    Beyond Great

by jackiek on 10/15/23Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

Polyphia, with DOMi and JD Beck was an amazing show. Not only was the music transcendent, but the vibe in the room was overwhelmingly euphoric. Midwxst was pretty cool, too.

    Polyphia is amazing

by Cdub on 10/15/23Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

1st time Polyphia concert attendee. What an amazing band. They didn’t disappoint. I’ll be following them from here on out. Anytime I have a chance to see them, I will. The knitting factory in Boise was a stellar venue as well. What a great place to see a rock concert.

    Amazing experience.

    by V. S. on 10/11/23

The price of the tickets were not bad at all, the VIP experience was easily the best. You are 3 feet away from the stage for around 20 minutes and it was great. The boys were very nice, and the price was great. It was such a memorable show.

Great Polyphia experience at the Wiltern

by John C on 10/8/23The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Amazing show! Great venue with the light show mesmerizing. Sounds could be improved, it seemed like the background tracks were a little muted, but all the live instruments sounded good. Staff was great, friendly, barely and long lines at the bar even for a sold out show

Truly masters of their craft and excellent entertainers. One of the best shows of my life!
