Pittsburgh Steelers History

The fifth-oldest franchise in the NFL, the Steelers were founded on July 8, 1933, by Arthur Joseph Rooney. One of the great pioneers of the sports world, Art Rooney, or "The Chief," is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Originally named the Pittsburgh Pirates, they were a member of the Eastern Division of the 10-team NFL. The Steelers have won eight conference championships, 24 division championships and six Super Bowl championships. They became the first NFL team to win six Super Bowl championships when they defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL, and are tied with the New England Patriots for the NFL team with the most Super Bowl wins. Many legendary players have worn the Steelers jersey over the years, including Terry Bradshaw, Jerome Bettis, Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, Franco Harris, and Troy Polamalu, among others.

With the hiring of Lowell Perry in 1957, the Steelers became the first NFL team to hire a Black assistant coach. They were also the first team to have a Black Super Bowl MVP when Franco Harris won the honor in 1957, and they were the first to hire a Black Coordinator with Tony Dungy in 1984, and the first female full-time athletic trainer with Ariko Iso in 2002.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium

The team has played a total of 14 playoff games at the stadium, winning eight. Situated along the Ohio River, the stadium was designed with the city's steel production history in mind, which led to the inclusion of 12,000 tons of steel into construction.

    Go Steelers!!

by Steviks on 8/15/09Heinz Field - Pittsburgh

Our first (but not last) trip to our first Steelers game was amazing! We started our adventure by tailgating in the Station Square parking lot, from there we enjoyed a quick trip across the river on the Gate Way Clipper! My very serious11 year old daughter and her best friend (they were the ones with green hair) FYI ... before you buy and spray ... check the can, not the cap for the actual color!! never smiled or laughed as much as they had on this trip. Seats were great too! We ended our evening with another quick trip across the river. What a perfect day and evening in the Burgh! Forgot to mention ... Hey Steelers! Great job, keep up the good work and lets make it seven!

    Heinz Field

by MissouriNFLfan on 8/14/09Heinz Field - Pittsburgh

I had a chance to visit Pittsburgh and Heinz Field. Though I thought the Steelers Walk and Hall of Fame is 2nd to none and a outstanding attraction every NFL fan should see, I was disappointed beyond that. For a new stadium, Heinz Field had dirty and smelly cattle buckets for toilets, concessions lines of 10 minutes or more and the sideline seats were 10 yards from the players and 20 yards from the sidelines. The view outside the stadium is the Fort Pittsburgh bridge and not the city. And the scoreboard, it was this giant 150 square foot TV, That was great, but was a fan you had only a 6 inch line at the bottom of the screen to show you the score and down and distances. Good luck finding any useful information beyond the score regarding game stats such as team timeouts etc. during a game. As new stadiums go, (less than 10 years old) this stadium was a disappointment.

    Steelers vs. Cardinals(Pre-Season Game)

    by The1andOnly on 8/14/09Heinz Field - Pittsburgh

For the ticket price, parking, and refreshments, there need to be better half-time entertainment. The crowd is always charged. The mascot is cool. The team might want to consider cheerleaders or a pep squad(females and males--so not to be sexist), with better music. Dogs catching frisbees was boring. At Pirate games they shoot out t-shirts at one point of the game. Please consider these ideas(whoever is in charge of this area). I also liked the jumbo tron screen and replays but the border-like display of the score and stats could be bigger. I was seated behind the goal post on the Steelers side, which was good. This was my first Steeler game and I believe all the seats seem to have been good. The tickets should be more affordable though. Professional athletes should also pay city taxes for working in the city.

road to seventh heaven started right

by sweatyeddie on 8/14/09Heinz Field - Pittsburgh

The steelers were simply amazing again. Big Ben and all of the starters were wonderful. Our new prospect Ziggy Hood will be a force to reckon with and Redman will be one of the RB's that other teams overlook.

    Super Bowl Rematch

by JackieW on 8/14/09Heinz Field - Pittsburgh

Great to be at the first pre-season game to watch the Steelers take on Arizona. Winning the Super Bowl rematch proves that the Steelers didn't win #6 by luck or chance .. but rarher by being the absolute best team in the NFL.

    Steelers Cardinals 08/13/09

by bradensdaddy on 8/14/09Heinz Field - Pittsburgh

Great game, and experience. I took my son to his first football game, and he loved it. The game started off slow, but picked up in the second half. Even though it was only pre-season, it was still great. I would definately love to experience this again with my son.
